Melnyk said the team wouldn’t have been able to afford a player the calibre of Bobby Ryan — the Anaheim Ducks’ star forward the team dealt for hours after learning Alfredsson would sign elsewhere — and met the numbers put forward by Alfredsson’s camp.

“You can’t have it both ways and say, ‘Well I want this for me, but I want you to do this with me and the team.’ It’s ‘which one do you want?’”

Melnyk says he eventually told general manager Bryan Murray: “We won’t be able to spend that kind of money, so don’t promise that we’re going to bring anybody else in other than filling a hole that was there.”

...

"And at the end, when I said blank cheque, that would have meant we would not have gotten the (Bobby Ryan-type player). Couldn’t afford it. Just couldn’t do it."

...

The Senators are operating under an internal player salary budget of just over $50 million (the NHL salary cap currently sits at just over $64 million). It has $50.8 million in salary committed already, according to CapGeek.com, with young restricted free agent defenceman Jared Cowen still to sign.

The Senators’ budget is a necessary move, Melnyk insisted, because of the razor-thin margins his team operates under.

and we had Bryan Murray claiming he told Alfie he was going to swing the deal for Bobby Ryan as well as give Alfie a blank check...

Alfredsson will be around 50 points this season. He is slowing down a bit, but he has the heart. I'm just shocked still he ditched the Sens.

If it is going to be at or around 50 points, I like 24 goals and 30 assists.

Does he have a number yet? What's taking him so long to pick and wear his old number 11?

Still no word of a number for him yet. As to why he hasn't picked a number, it's been discussed a couple pages back. Long story short, he's/they're probably waiting to see if Cleary comes back and wants his #11. If Cleary is gone (which I believe he is), then Alfredsson will take it. If Cleary returns, Cleary might give the #11 to Alfredsson for the one season he'll be here, or Alfie might pick something else.

Expect Daniel Alfredsson to speak Thursday. #Sens #Wings

Melnyk seemed to take exception with Alfredsson's comments on July 5th in which the Swedish winger suggested that he's more likely to hoist a cup playing for Detroit than for the Senators. “I think he’s wrong, I’ll tell you that, that’s where we part ways," Melnyk told the Citizen, "I think we’re a better team... We look forward to Detroit finishing right behind us and (Alfredsson) having a good year.”

lol big words from a man who has managed to keep his team much worse than Detroit for many, many years. This year was the first in many years that they even tied us in points, after we had the highest man games lost to injury, lost two top 3 defensemen, one of which is arguably the best d-man to ever play the game, and had trouble scoring. Yes Melnyk, your team is SOOOO much better...

On a side note, Alfie should most certainly be getting his $2mil bonus, as all he has to do is play 10 games, if anyone was wondering...

The Red Wings currently have 24 players signed for a salary cap figure of $67 million. That includes a little more than $3 million in performance bonuses (including Daniel Alfredsson's $2 million for playing in 10 games), which can be applied to the 2014-15 cap.

Well Melynk is just what he is a loud and sometimes - more often not really funny guy - seeing the sens as a business and not as a team first. Maybe he should focus on caring about his team instead of the casino? Anyway if the Sens are better this season so be it, the Wings are entering their rebuilding their years, so if Detroit makes thenplayoffs that's already a huge success, no matter where Ottawa is finishing.

Their first line is killer but they lack offensive depth and other then karlson their defense is not that good. Andersson on the other hand is elite so yes overall they might finish better but who cares let's build for the future...

Anderson is elite? This is news to me, I thought the rankings around here for elite were goalies with several consistent good seasons, which is why Howie is not considered "elite". Hey if Anderson is elite, Howie is too

Edit: I was also under the impression most "elite" level goalies don't spend the majority of their careers as a backup...

Howard is considered a good one just not elte. Andersson can't be blamed for his injury in a lockout shortened season, should he decline this year then we can talk about removing him from being elite.

Every goalie has to start out at some point Rask learned behind Thomas does that make him less elite? I highly doubt that

It's things like this that make me upset that Paul McLean is Ottawa's coach now.

Task always was good, Anderson has never been consistently. How bout if he puts up another good season we can talk about him being elite. He had a good 24 games this year. His numbers as a whole, and the majority of the years are worse then Howies.

So let's see, the team has an internal cap nearly $14m below the cap ceiling & as an owner, he's said he can't afford to put any more money into the team after his casino bid was shut down. Good luck fighting off the Leafs for the 4 spot as the Wings & Bruins battle it out for #1 in the Atlantic, Eugene.

No the Sens are better now cause they have Ryan, remember how stellar he was against us in the playoffs? Lol

Yup. One bad playoffs negates a whole career of 30+ goal seasons.

He's never really been a "force" in the playoffs. I never said he was a bad player, I'd love for us to get him, but to think he makes the Sens a perennial contender is asinine. He is inconsistent, and doesn't put up a lot of assists. He is just like franzen, he is a good asset, but he isn't a game changer in the way the Sens think he will be.

Let's agree, that both need tonhave a very very good year if the Sens and Detroit Red Wings are hoping to make the playoffs. Who cares about Melynk the on ice performance usually does the talking for the Detroit Red Wings.

A huge reason why Rask became so good was Timmy Thomas, he backstopped the teamto the cup and Rask could freely - without pressure - finetune his game. This will also be huge season for him Chara is aging and also his first season under the huge contract.

I also don't think this Detroit Red Wings edition will fight for the top spots, more around 6+

He had a mediocre season in general, and his playoffs were worse than merely bad. His compete level was terrible, and he was invisible outside of a small stretch in game two.
