who's on their way out of Detroit

If we could move some "dead money" on pine riders for a good defenseman I'd have to rethink my stance on Holland and eat crow.

You really think someone is going to trade a good defenseman for Tootoo, Samuelsson or Bertuzzi? Share with me what you've been smoking, please!

Holland has backed himself into a corner and our choices are trading a good young player like Nyquist or Tatar or trying to give away Tootoo, Eaves or Emmerton. Everyone knows Holland has too many players and is over the cap. Who's going to offer anything?

Detroit is posturing itself to acquire that top defensemen IMO. They obviously are not going to let Smith, Nyquist OR Andersson walk via RFA and with only $2.3M left in capspace, they will need to trade some players away to get below the cap by October. I had heard that the reason the didn't buyout Sammy is that he was injured and they couldn't. This will most likely also prevent him from being traded, who wants a healthy Sammy, let alone an injured one? I think Holland waits a bit to see if Helm gets the go ahead to play before he trades some depth. If Helm gets the A O.K. for full speed ahead, I can see Emmerton being traded for sure, although his salary is VERY cheap and manageable. You have to shed Sammy's salary somehow, it's a no brainer, also you have to dump Q. That opens up $6.75M more space. If Brunner fell out of favor with the Wings for his disappointing season (which I though went well, and a great playoff) then Q had to REALLY disappoint them, one would think. The emergence of Kindl last season (who I was more than ready to ship off) makes Q expendable, IMO...

It's my opinion that Sammy and Bert get buried LTIR, Q and Emmy (plus more) get traded in a deal for a top defender and I do believe that Brunner will be back. For pete's sake, he was 5th in scoring this year and 3rd in playoff scoring, leading with 5 goals. It makes no sense that he would be let go...unless the rumored $2.5M he is asking for is wrong and he wants more...Cleary should absolutely walk or take a spot in the office somewhere...

Now, who is acquired is a different matter. For one, I don't even know who is on the block anywhere. Is Visnovsky still wanting out of the Island? I know he re-signed there, but is he happy? Would he be happier in Detroit? Islanders need a backup goalie, maybe package Q and Monster for Visnovsky... that along with the LTIR of Bert and Sammy, would open up $5.6M (adding in Visnovsky's $4.75M) to re-sign the kids...

That would give you a roster like this:

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Alfredsson

Franzen - Weiss - Brunner

Nyquist - Helm - Tatar

Miller - Andersson - Abdelkader

Eaves - Emmerton - Tootoo

Kronwall - Visnovsky

Dekeyser - Ericsson

Smith - Kindl

Lashoff

Howard

Coreau

You can't just put a player on LTIR. They have rules. Samuelsson has told anyone who will listen that he does not need surgery. Betruzzi played last post season. Chris Pronger is legitimately injured with severe concussion symptoms. The only reason they aren't taking him off LTIR is because of the big contract. But they can keep him there because he IS hurt.

Sammy/Bert/Tootoo.

This is our nightmare.

Can we get rid of them?

Is there a team willing to buy our draft picks = taking on these 3 guys for a couple first rounders.

Red Wings trade:

Bertuzzi

Samuelsson

Tootoo

2014 1st Rounder

2015 1st Rounder

Florida Trades:

2015 7th Rounder

You have to be joking. That is a disaster.

If Holland wants Bert gone, he would have bought him out. Same for Tootoo. So why would we trade our picks for the same relief?

Bertuzzi should just retire. He and Samuelsson are handcuffing the team.

Cleary should not be re-signed. That's on Holland.

Tootoo is not to blame for anything. He's the only completely blameless person on the entire roster.

Why would he give up a couple of million because Holland was stupid?

Samulesson has a NO TRADE CLAUSE. He can't be traded, can't be bought out, can't be put on LTIR. Ugh.

I agree about Tootoo. It isn't his fault, I'm not a huge fan, but I think he did pretty much what I expected, but for whatever reason, they signed him to 3 years yet don't want what he brings to the table.

Nah, Sammy and Bert come off the books next year. Save the 1st's, we are going to need them to not put our new scouts in a position to fail. I think a trade is probably going to send us a top pairing defenseman, which will alleviate the log jam. Plus I want to see Sammy's career end in Toledo...

Pronger is not on LTIR yet.

The Philadelphia Flyers' first pick at the NHL Draft was a 6-6 defenseman who likes to fight. If that sounds familiar, it should.

Chris Pronger, currently on long-term injured reserve with post-concussion syndrome and vision problems stemming from a stick to the eye in 2011, helped scout Samuel Morin.

Not positive on this, but I don't think a player with his experience can just be optioned to the minors. He'd have to go willingly, which I don't think he'd do. Even if he went, we're still on the hook for the cap hit.

You guys are being silly... the Red Wings defense is fine and right on par with most other teams in the league. It is far better than s***sburg's for example, better than the Rangers, the Habs, the Kings, the Ducks, etc. Keep in mind, we will now have Danny Dekeyser for an entire season... look at his impact he had once we signed him. Even Babs said we did not make playoffs had we not signed him. Also, last year we had tons of injuries to our Defense so they were never really able to mesh with a partner. I think Smith especially will show much more offense abilities this year while he gets to mesh with a partner.

This is the lineup I think Babs will look to start the season with and it looks damn good to me.

Zetterberg- Datsyuk- Abdelkator

Alfredson- Weiss- Franzen

Nyquivst- Helm- Tatar (omg that 3rd line is just beautifully filled with speed and skill)

Eaves- Anderson- Miller/Bertuzzi

Kronwall- Ericsson

Dekeyser- Smith (I really want Babs to try this out)

Kindl- Quincy

Obviously this means Cleary, Brunner walk, and Kenny trades Sammy and Tootoo for picks which I am more than okay with.

I think this is a SOLID team.

I agree with everything except I think New York's defense is better than ours. They have some crazy young defensemen (staal, del Zotto, etc)

This is definitely a solid team though

He can, but it'd be like a 2.1 cap hit, as opposed to the full 3.

"BURIED CONTRACTS (Wade Redden Rule)

Money paid to players outside of the NHL counts against the cap.

A one-way contract counts against the cap as follows:

cap hit – [ minimum salary + $375,000 ]

Example: If Wade Redden plays in the minors in 2012-13, he counts as follows.

$6.5M – [ $525,000 + $375,000 ] = $5.6M"

I hope they do this and make this year on him a spotlight while he plays in Toledo. Call it Sammy 24/7, how's your pectoral muscle now buddy?

I only really see three ways of moving Samuelsson...

#1: A team is desperate to hit the cap floor and needs to add.
#2: The Wings attach a prospect with him to entice another team to take him.
#3: The Wings agree to retain some of his salary in a deal with another team.

Either way, I think they're going to have to move him. There's just no space.

Capgeek doesn't have him listed as LTIR and he's still counting against their cap.

All 3 of your options require Sammy to wave his NTC.

There should be a No Old Bastard Signings clause in Holland's contract.

Sorry Cleary.

When the alternative is, "we'll waive you and send you to Grand Rapids/Toledo" you don't think he would?

Would be nice if he did, but he obviously didn't want to move around hence why he got the NTC. In my uninformed opinion, he will go sit in the minors, receive his paycheck, and claim injury there before doing something to help the organization out. Plus that's kinda what I want to happen. He would have got 2 mil to go to free agency, so give him 2 mil to watch minor league hockey and not play for a year. That would effectively end his career. Edited by MasterPavel

Does anyone here actually believe that the Wings would send Sammy, an NHL vet, and well liked teamate to TOLEDO!?!?!

Not a chance the wings show such little class. At worst, they may try sending him to GR, no way he goes any further down than that.

Well I respond - did anyone actually believe Sammy would be so low to claim injured status to avoid being bought out after seeming perfectly fine and having a broken nail? That was showing little class.
