Carlo Colaiacovo is literally made out of glass. This is a scientific fact. He is the most injury-prone human being ever. Of all time. In history. Forever.

For exhibit A I present to you this man:

BDD_JD_shoulder_1.2.07.jpg

The one The only Man of Glass, J.D. DREW!!!

This man would literally crumble to his knees at the mere though of playing hockey, someone being able to hit him, no way!

He hurts himself breathing enough as is!!!

2 more goals tonight. I wish he wasn't in our division so I could root for him.

I don't see why people keep bringing up his play this season. If he'd played this way last season, or even half as good, he'd be on the team right now.

He was coming off a knee injury while playing in Finland during the lockout, and he missed time with a wrist injury. What did Weiss do during the 2012 season? Oh, right, he didn't play, but was deserving of a 5 year deal. And according to Babcock himself, he was offered a 7 year deal. So maybe it was the other way around? He didn't want to play for the Wings and they weren't able to maximize his talent?

He had two months to rehab from what was, at most, a moderate injury, and his skating was unaffected. His later wrist injury was minor. Neither required surgery. Players very often recover from these injuries mid-season and do very well. Filppula did not.

Filppula did want to play for the Red Wings. He was simply not offered the contract that he wanted, and rightfully so; he had a single good season under his belt, and was coming off the worst of his career.

Just about every hockey analyst on the planet judged Weiss a wise signing by Holland.

Facts etc. etc.

Flip would not be playing like he is if he signed with the Wings. Our system is not helping our team create offense. If you look at Hudler and Flip, they are shooting more then ever and scoring and going to areas they never did with Detroit.

Why in the world do we perpetuate this ridiculous discussion? Filpulla is gone and he's never coming back. He will NOT sustain what he has done thus far. He never has. Weiss is here, now. You're ready to want Filpulla back after one quarter of one season? Please. And don't even get me started on Hudler. A one-dimensional, system player that blows over in the breeze. No thanks.

Facts: Filppula sprained his MCL November 14, 2012 and was projected to be out 6-8 weeks. The NHL season started January 19, 2013. So when did he have all this "rehab" time? He was off the ice for most of that time. How does this not affect his skating? So when Weiss has a wrist injury, it takes months to get over, but anyone else is supposed to shrug it off and play well?

You don't know that Filppula wanted to play for the Wings. You're guessing, not giving facts. I have heard just the opposite. That he turned down the long term deal because he absolutely did not want to play for Babcock any more. You stated that he was no longer here because he didn't perform well last

season. That was not a fact, as the Wings offered him a long term deal to stay. They wanted him. He did not want to be here.

If you want to give your opinion, you're entitled to do that. But quit with the "fact" BS. You don't have facts. You have speculation and opinion.

Filppula played really badly last year. As such, management did not feel comfortable giving Filppula the 5m he wanted - It was deemed to be too much of a risk. Everyone around here scoffed at the idea that he could demand that much. Yes, the Wings offered him a long term contract and wanted him here, but he only had one really good season and that was on Zetterberg's wing - not as second line center where he would really be valueable. As such they offered him less. Filppula went to free agency and got his 5m from the Lightning.

That's the version of events I read just about eveywhere.

Sometimes players will perform better with a new team. Whether it's the change of message, system, or just scenery, there is an improvement. I'm sure Filppula is benefiting from at least one of these.

I have also heard from several sources that Tampa's coach, Cooper, is great at getting the best out of his players. He's not a "systems" guy, he lets his assistants handle that, but he's a tremendous motivator. Filppula always struck me as someone who needed motivating...

First off, that was a 9 week difference from injury to season start. Secondly, filppula played when he felt better, not because he felt he had to, so he obviously felt like he was close to %100 and as others have stated, his skating was fine. He wanted a big contract and he got it. But you cannot deny he was play was atrocious Edited by Euro_Twins

His play was no where near atrocious. Even when he's not getting points he was still consistently one of the best defensive forwards on the ice. His point total was bad, no one will deny that, but calling his play atrocious is ridiculous.

That said, he would not have performed well here this season. He's playing with higher talent players, playing on the power play, and getting more minutes than he did here. He had s***ty linemates here, was getting shoved down to the 3rd line, and always being juggled on different lines with different players. No one is going to play well under those situations. Just look at the team this year, we have the same exact problem with his replacement. I honestly think Weiss would have a hell of a lot better season on another team. Our 2nd and 3rd lines have just been bad this year.

I know this will be considered hearsay, but from a very connected friend - I know that Fil was offered 5 years, then 7 years at around 4.5 because he wanted longer term.

He was hoping to negotiate 5 or more mil per also and wanted to use FA as leverage. He had no intentions of leaving Detroit, but got solid offers from Dallas and Tampa Bay and Detroit basically stopped negotiating when he turned down the 7 year offer.

He wasn't thrilled to be leaving at the time.

7 years @ 4.5 is a great deal for what he had proven thus far with the Wings. I would stop negotiating as well.

Preach.

Yeah, we totally didn't need our #3/4 forward in a year when we barely made the playoffs. Also, his skating the entire year was actually off. You could probably find posts from me mentioning it. He was not skating as well as he usually does.

Ignore Crymson, he'll say anything to discredit Filppula, regardless of its accuracy. Thing such as "moderate injury at best" when he in fact knows nothing about the injury. He'll also say that 6-8 weeks is more than enough time to recover from an injury where you can't even skate and have to sit on your ass and then he'll turn around and say that Weiss hasn't fully recovered from from his wrist injury 9 months prior where you can at least stay in game shape by skating.

You don't seem to appreciate facts when they contravene your arguments. Unfortunately for your cause, full information on Filppula's 2012 injury is available on numerous websites, and the forum thread to which you refer is available for all to see that you are placing words directly into my virtual mouth. Quite frankly, you're wasting your time.

That said, I've still not figured out why your defenses of Filppula are so vehement and emotional that they come replete with personal attacks against those who criticize him.

He hasn't been anymore personal than you have. You've said things that are hypocritical and have double standards when it comes to Fil when compared to other players. If you dish it out, be prepared to take it back and stop with the drama.

Telling you you're wrong and use no logic isn't a personal insult if its completely accurate. In reference to Weiss performing poorly, you brought up his injury and then said "Recovery takes time". I'm putting no words in your mouth. There is literally no other legitimate meaning to what you said other than to imply that Weiss might be performing poorly due to his injury 7 months (I know I said 9 months in the other post, but I think it was 7). Absolutely zero. And when you're so vehement yourself about Filppula performing poorly and create completely opposing logic depending on whether you're attacking him or not, it factually enrages me.

Now, if you make the case that you don't know what the things you say actually mean, that's one thing. But for someone who tries so hard to make himself sound super smart by using such over the top vocabulary, I kind of find that hard to believe. I don't think you're stupid. I think you're a raging hypocrite.

And even if there are personal attacks in what I say, they are certainly not "replete" with them.

Yes, please, let us keep on the topic of a player that left the Wings months ago that no one wanted for the price and now wants his points and to use this to rip apart the entire Wings organization.

(Not directed at T. Low!) (And yes, please, stay on topic or I will lock it and take other appropriate action.)

I specified that what I said was speculation. I also don't go around berating other posters for their lack of "facts" and then not giving any facts at all or completely inaccurate information.

We can all speculate about what went down. The only official fact we have is from Babcock stating that he was offered 7 years. He went out of his way to mention that the Wings wanted him. So if Babcock is still talking and thinking about Flip, it's not surprising the fans are too.

If his replacement, Weiss, had been anywhere near productive, no one would be talking about Filppula. But when he was playing, he was horrible. You can blame his injury 8 months ago or the "system" or his line mates, but thus far, he has not been an upgrade. By the looks of Helm's play with Tatar and Franzen, we had our #2 center all along. If that's the case, we paid out a 5/25 deal for a #3 center. I really hope he becomes the player he was in Florida. It wasn't encouraging to read he is almost glad for the injury so he could have the mental break to overcome the slump.

Valtteri Filppula left practice early Thursday to rest his ailing knee

The Detroit forward suffered a sprained right in mid-November while playing in Finland during the lockout. "It's been bothering me for a little bit," said Filppula. "I was expecting to be still feeling it (because) it hasn't been that long (since the injury occurred). Hopefully it goes away soon." A troublesome knee could partially explain why he hasn't recorded a point yet after three games this season. He expects to play Friday against Minnesota though.

Thanks for pointing out about the facts available regarding the injury. Good to know the "facts" state how fully recovered he was from his "minor" injury. I mean, really, who needs solid knees to play hockey? Clearly had nothing to do with how he played.
