At least Yzerman got him. We'll see him in our division quite a bit and it'll be weird seeing him in blue but it was obvious he wanted out of Detroit.

They should have just stuck with Vinnie...

"The leader must never close the gap between himself and the group. If he does, he is no longer what he must be. He must walk a tightrope between the consent he must win and the control he must exert."
Vince Lombardi
When asked who won, Babcock said, “Well it doesn’t really matter as long as you don’t lose. It’s like going bear hunting, you take a slow guy with you in case the bear is hungry.”

Makes perfect sense from Yzerman's standpoint. He's already familiar with Fil, and he just lost a center in Vinny Lecavalier. Looks like we'll be seeing a lot of Filp now in our new division! Bring it on!

I kept this thread because people had already posted in this one about the signing, but for future reference:

Don't ever post an Eklund rumor in this forum. They belong in the rumors forum.

Second, any threads regarding signings need legitimate confirmation from a reputable source.

As far as I know an E5 is not , nor has ever been considered a "rumor."

I apologize.

No problem.

I don't consider Eklund a reputable source no matter how he ranks them.

For things like contract signings it's best to stick with guys like Lebrun, Dreger, and McKenzie.  People who may not break the news first but actually have to make sure it's correct to protect their reputation as hockey journalists and also the reputation of TSN.

Z, D and C is crying in a corner somewhere.

Oh please. I'm crying on my chair like a man.

Though I think it could be argued its a lateral move when its all said and done

Oh yeah it could.

No, I'm actually happy with this. Both Flip and the Wings needed a change. Hopefully he does well in Tampa, though their depth on wing is pretty shallow.

Just cause you look like the gimp don't mean you play like the gimp!

Change could definitely be good for him. You have to wonder how motivated he was to be a Wing asking for $5 million+, and who could blame him in some ways? Perhaps he'll be able to elevate his play on a team where he has more of a chance to be a top player. It wasn't going to happen in Detroit so long as Dats and Z were around.

But as I've said all along, I wish Holland had realized this 2-3 years ago and traded him to help fill a more pressing need back when he was by far our best trade asset...

Well, if he wasn't gonna re-sign with Detroit, I guess this is as good a result as I could have hoped for, at least he didn't end up on a team that I despise.  Looks like I won't be getting that Filppula Red Wings jersey this Christmas, perhaps a Filppula Bolts t-shirt and a blank Wings sweater until I decide who my new favorite Wing is.

Thanks for everything Filps, good luck in Tampa

This.  He shut down Malkin and scored a couple of big goals in the 08 finals, and for that he gets my thanks and best wishes

"If I can be totally honest, it's not a lot of guys you get impressed by. Actually, it's no one else but him. From the bench, to see what move he makes -- you're like, 'I wish I could do that.' Sometimes you sit on the bench and just think, 'wow,' and you look over to the other bench and they sit there and shake their heads, too. He has great, great skills. I'm probably not going to play with another player who has the kind of skills he has." Mikael Samuelsson on Pavel Datsyuk

Contracts like this are the reason for the lockout.  Overpaid by 2M.

I know hindsight is 20/20 but it sure would've been nice for the Wings to get something in return for a player they drafted and developed in their system.

In the end it's a business so no hard feelings towards Flip, but I think Detroit has been on the overly loyal end sometimes and end up paying for it.

Hmmm.... maybe we should let Yzerman get more GM practice over there in TB if he is gonna over pay for players.

I hope he's happy there and that he does well and avoids injuries.

If any Tampa girls are interested, I have 64 pics in my Flip folder I'd be willing to share.

I'll miss him, but 5/5 was way too much.

Somewhere Loo is in her pajamas with a tub of ice cream watching chick flicks drowning her sorrows.

Wish he was a bit more reasonable with his asking price, hope for years of success in Tampa and don't disappoint Mr. Yzerman now mister.
