mule 31 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 I mentioned this in a previous thread and thought it could use a thread of it's own. (Mods feel free to lock or close if I'm getting ahead of myself!) Is anyone else extremely excited for the Olympics but dreading them as a Red Wings fan? It is likely that we could have 8 players in the tournament and with our injury luck the last few seasons this really makes me nervous. There's a lot of hockey to be played this season and I'm praying injuries don't become a major factor at the end of the season. Does anyone else feel the same way as I do? Who on our roster do you think will be at the games representing their country? Sweden: Franzen, Zetterberg, Alfredsson, Kronwall, Ericsson Russia: Datsyuk Czech Republic: Kindl Slovakia: Tatar USA: Howard (backup)
redwings15 47 Report post Posted July 7, 2013 I'm pretty excited for the Winter Olympics! I love the picture of Hull, Cheli, Yzer, and Shanahan in their olympic jerseys. Do you think Howard will back up Quick?

Do you think Howard will back up Quick? If I were choosing today I would say 1) Quick 2) Howard 3) Anderson. Having said that it's still a long way away and Miller and Schneider could easily be selected.
cr00d 26 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 I think both Abby and Tatar have outside chances at making their respected clubs. Both players represented their countries very well at the World Championships in 2011-2012. Abby - 8GP 1G 3A 4P +4 Tatar - 10GP 2G 3A 5P +1 1 Wingsfan72 reacted to this

Abby - 8GP 1G 3A 4P +4 Tatar - 10GP 2G 3A 5P +1 I would venture to guess abby has an incredibly low % chance, while tatar has far less competition at the end of the Slovak roster. The world championships rarely if ever include the best players from their respective countries and most won't be included in the olympic team, slovakia's team just isn't nearly as deep as USA so tatar has a better chance. achildr1 255 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 I'm no expert but I think Mrazek, Tvrdon, Pulkkinen, Andersson, and Dekeyser could be seriously looked at for thier countries. The Czech/Slovak rosters, I beilieve, aren't nearly as deep as they were 10 years ago...which I assume would open up opportunities for Tvrdon and Mrazek. Pulkkinen has been one of the best players in Finland for awhile. Andersson isn't as close but if I'm the Swedish GM, I'm taking a long look. Dekeyser has almost no shot I imagine, but with injuries and a half season to consider the blueline, he might get a look.
Din758 371 Report post Posted July 9, 2013 I just hope the swedes go down quick. No need to add 15 games to their 82+20ish (playoffs) sched.

I'd be cool with Sweden winning gold and the Wings winning the cup. I guess we can add Alfredsson to the list too.
StormJH1 231 Report post Posted July 10, 2013 Interesting topic. The injury stuff with the Olympics is a 100% legit issue - we just push it to the side because the tournament itself is so intriguing. The wear-and-tear on Howard would definitely be a concern, but barring an injury to Quick, Howard will probably be more jet-lagged than fatigued. Howard's stock has shot up this past year, but not higher than Quick's. Of course, one bad game and a relief appearance could change that too, who knows. Pretty cool that the U.S. suddenly has killer depth at goaltender, things used to be pretty rough for us. It's easy to say that Abdelkader, DeKeyser, Tatar, etc. have a shot at making their squads, but when you start listing out other players that could take their place, they get eliminated pretty quickly. For the European countries and Russia, also don't forget that there are a number of players in the KHL, Elite League, etc. that are very enticing to hockey federations, but just don't happen to be currently in the NHL.
