might not be the "heart and soul" but he's definitely the MVP of the bottom 6.  He carries them like Datsyuk carries the top 6.

Helm, who has been battling back issues for the past eight months, has been skating regularly for a couple of weeks. Babcock said he “absolutely'' expects the third-line center to be ready for the start of training camp, Sept. 12 at Centre I.C.E. in Traverse City.

“I didn't see him today, so he must be doing really good,'' Babcock said. “He had another day off, I would assume. Things are going good for him. He must be ready to go.''

From now on, Patrick Roy will be rolled out to and from the Avs' bench like Hannibal Lecter. - BottleOfSmoke

Attempt to just lower expectations or really a concern?  Helm admits to only being partially pain free:

Helm's played, what, 1 game in over a year and half? I hate to say it, but I don't think he's going to hit NHL ice again.

These things take time.

He won't be better all at once.

Puckloo39 told me about this LINK.

Asked if he was pain free he said, “Fairly.”

Helm did say he’s unable to lift like he has been able to in the past and that’s a level he needs to come close to before returning to the ice.

“I’m still a bit away from (squats),” Helm said. “That’s one thing I do want to overcome before I start playing again. I want to be able to do the stuff I used to do, maybe not to the extreme that I used to do, but I still want to be able to do some fairly heavy lifting. I’m not at that point yet.”

He doesn't sound too sure to me. :(

I'll be amazed if he's ready to go by, what is it, 10/2? That's less than a month away! Not complaining or anything, just saying.

I guess it all comes down to training camp, and how he handles the physicality.

Slightly upsetting news indeed but, I don't want helm back unless he's 100%. No need to rush

Helene St. James, on twitter...

Darren Helm not part of informal Red Wings skate today, has pulled groin, per Ken Holland.

My god, can this guy catch a break? Looks like him being on LTIR is part of the equation for getting two bodies off the team. I imagine that waiving Eaves will be the other half, since Emmerton is going to be used as that 4th C now.

The most popular choice among the Red Wings as to who would volunteer to play goalie – several Panthers did in their game – was Brendan Smith.

"He's pretty competitive and he seems to be good at everything," Justin Abdelkader said. "He'd volunteer himself."

Babcock was a bit more hesitant about Smith. "Yeah, yeah, just work on getting out of your zone," Babcock said

The cynical conspiracy theorist in me thinks this "groin pull" is part of some bigger, evil plan to re-sign Cleary. I mean, a groin pull? Now? After all the skating he's be doing? After that prospects camp?

Helm on LTIR. *cringe* Nyquist to Grand Rapids. *cringe* Cleary re-signs. *cringe*

Whatever had been bothering him has been doing so for a year. If this was an issue that could heal on its own with time, it would've been fixed by now. I am really worried that we won't see Helm play unless the problem is diagnosed and surgically repaired.

The cynic in me says we need to get the Darren Helm voodoo doll away from Cory Emmerton.

Wings' Darren Helm said ultrasound on groin showed no significant damage. But he's not sure if he'll be ready for start of camp Thursday

No significant damage, but still terrible news.  Is this guy ever going to play in the NHL again?

Not that any part of this is "OK", but I'm glad the team has guys who play a similar type game (defensive, PK) as Helm. No one's going to be Darren Helm, but Ferraro and Sheahan are going to be capable bottom six, PK guys in the near future. Guess I'm just trying to look for a silver lining here... bleh.
