Over/under on him "retiring" from the KHL and coming back to North America next year?

It depends on how his team does.  If he does indeed win their cup, I can see him coming back for another crack at Stanley.

I now have no sig.

Is Kovy's team any good?

When cup contending teams r all chasing u I understand signing with the one who offers the most (NJ). And obviously that was a good choice as he almost won the cup with them. But then with losing Parise and then all their financial problems I'm guessing he sensed the ship was sinking. Now he gets to go chase the Gagarin cup in his home country, and can return to chase the Stanley again. Plus NJ and all there financial woes gets to shed that long contract

They sure weren't happy about losing his contract.

agreed. they're probably extremely happy to lose that god awful contract in the long run.

if they manage to make the playoffs this year, i'm sure they won't be upset about losing kovy at all.

If it's for three years at $4 million a season, yes.

I bet that they couldn't sell the franchise with that contract on the books. That's probably why the whole thing was amicable.

works every time

i wouldn't be surprised. and i'm sure they'll recover (teamwise).... yeah, kovy's a great offensive player but the devils have one of the best goalie tandems in the league and have some pretty good younger talent imo

From The Score:

When it comes to the KHL salary cap, apparently not all teams are playing by the same rules.

In an exclusive interview with Sovietsky Sport's Pavel Lysenkov, KHL president Alexander Medvedev revealed that seven former NHL players were signed to deals that were not subjected to their respective teams' cap limits.

The players in question are: Ilya Kovalchuk (SKA), Alexander Radulov (CSKA Moscow), Anton Babchuk (Salavat Yulaev), Andrei Kostitsyn (Avanguard Omsk), Alexander Burmistrov (AK Bars Kazan), Leo Komarov (Dynamo Moscow) and Ruslan Fedotenko (Donbass).

LOL,

Can this guy sign a deal that doesn't break some sort of rules?

You know when anything hockey related in Russia is being "questioned" that it must be real bad.

The weird part is the other players, none of them deserve any special treatment.

I mean I get it, if you own a KHL team you do everything you can to get a guy like Kovy, but Babchuk or Burmistrov, not sure I bend the rules for them!

"When I was looking for a captain, I wanted a guy with the Red Wings crest tattooed on his chest," said former Detroit coach Jacques Demers, who named Yzerman captain in 1986. "Steve Yzerman was that guy."

“Told him if he wasn't ultra-competitive he couldn't come here. If he didn't bring it every day he couldn't come here, because he was going to hate it if he didn't, dislike the coach and dislike playing here.
“It's real straightforward. If you don't do it right, you're not happy here." Babcock

The KHL really needs to GTFO.

Just saw on TSN that Kovalchuk may be looking to find his way back to the NHL. To do so, he either needs to take a full year off of pro hockey, or if he signs for a team, all other 29 teams must sign off on it. There seems to be a possible loop hole that he could just go back to playing for the Devils to avoid the whole 29 other teams signing off thing. Gonna be interesting to see what happens.

Not at all surprising. He made a rash decision(I'm assuming) and now is regretting it. Also not to start any kind of political discussion, but the current political climate in Russia has to be weighing on his decision to come back to the NHL.

Devils are entering their rebuild/retool phase soon so I doubt they'll have any use for a 30 + highly paid former player, also I can't see any of the other teams signing off on this I would be a Radulov 2 situation. I'm not going into any political discusson here but I believe the downslope of the Russian currency might have something to do with it maybe.

Also I'm starting to wonder at what point in his life does this guy think he has made enough money, he might very well have earned more than 60 $ mill. till now. Kovalchuck seems to be believe h can walk in and out of he leagues when he decides to do so no matter if he has a contract or not *lol*
