Blues hire Conklin as development coach

He seemed like he was always just on the brink of success before it fell apart, went to the finals 3 times with 3 different teams and lost them all. Had a chance to get a lot of starts with the Wings and couldn't put a string of wins together. At least he is still around the game.

Should have signed him last season, "Monster" was a virtual no-show, and I can't help but wonder how Howie would have played in the playoffs if he had some nights off during the season.

Not saying Howard didn't play his ass off, he did. But maybe he would have had just a tiny bit more in the tank if Conks had backed him up. That little 1% that can sometimes make all the difference.

Conks:

2011-12 (Det): 15 app, 5 w, 6 l, 1 otl, 3.28 GAA, .884 sv%

Monster

2012-13 (Det): 7 app, 2 w, 2 l, 1 otl, 2.92 GAA, .879 sv%

I would call it a wash actually. Monster's lower GAA can be attributed to the Wings playing a better overall defensive game last season & I for one think Conks would have gotten as short of a leash (i.e. playing a fewer percentage of games) as Monster did if he were backing Jimmy up last year given the importance of each game in a shortened season & where the Wings sat in the playoff race.

Great for him, I'm glad to see him still involved.

Despite popular belief, Conklin was actually very very solid for us during several stretches during his first stint here. He had some unfortunate luck during the next stint (D corps ravaged by injury, starting goalies out of the lineup, up and down from the AHL).

Wish the guy nothing but the best, he was always a class act for the Wings. Outdoor game stud too.
