It's pretty well known that Soviet era, and even modern Russian passeneger aircraft aren't exactly up to par with their N.American/European counterparts (pilots/air crew/ground crew qualities apply here as well). Some years ago I read Harvard grad/American born hockey player Tod Hartje's experience playing for Sokol Kiev for 1 season back in 1990...His vivid descriptions of druken passengers rolling down the aisle while taking off, surly flight crews, and the "crudeness" of the aircraft themselves (in other words - they were lumps of crap with wings) made air travel "interesting" (if not downright frightening) to say the least.
