I believe it to be authentic. If you look at a bunch of examples, a lot of things stand out to this signature. Look at a few below.

The open ended A in both the first and last name, how HOF '96' is written out in a lot of these autographs are very close. The fluidity of the autograph is also correct.

I think your friend can breathe easy, also in general when you get phony autographs online the seller doesn't have anywhere close to a 12k positive ebay reputation.

I worked for a legitimate sports collectibles business for years so i'm pretty familiar with determining what is authentic and what isn't and especially what to look for an warning signs of phony sigs. I think you are good to go with the example you provided.
