I was lazy in my thought; I should not of said that we would be in trouble, rather that we would be nothing special.

Well, I guess for us, that is in trouble.

Had to go with Weiss. The guy is a goal scoring machine. And most likely will have career numbers in our system with the talent we'll surround him with. Not saying it's an absolute lock, but he's def the biggest X-factor on this team.

Helm.  If he's healthy he completely transforms our bottom six, not to mention our PK.  The one game he played last season (which coincidentally Bert also played in) we suddenly had a balanced line-up.  For me, he is easily our 3rd most important forward.

"If I can be totally honest, it's not a lot of guys you get impressed by. Actually, it's no one else but him. From the bench, to see what move he makes -- you're like, 'I wish I could do that.' Sometimes you sit on the bench and just think, 'wow,' and you look over to the other bench and they sit there and shake their heads, too. He has great, great skills. I'm probably not going to play with another player who has the kind of skills he has." Mikael Samuelsson on Pavel Datsyuk

Remember in 2011 when Pav was out for a stretch of games. It was for knee surgery i think. We lost a majority of the games when he didn't play. i just don't think the wings win without him.

Flip wasn't all that bad... he was good enough to keep in 08' when Columbus wanted him for Fedorov's return, who, in my mind, would have been the X-Factor in 2009 for us to repeat instead of losing in 7 games...

I picked Alfie, I think when Babcock assembles to line of Alfie, Z and Franzen that it is going to be great.  Franzen just may top 30 goals this season playing with Z and Alfie...

ill agree with you that would be a good line combination.. it wont happen though cause Weiss will not play the wing.

look how messed up our "other" line would be Weiss Dats Abby

I really like this post....so many factors to consider! I actually think it's Gus and here is my rationale. We know the stellar career Alfie has had and we know what he brings. Weiss was a guy I have wanted since day one and he adds a depth that I love. Hank is a rockstar and Pavel the same. Franzen....well....he is like an unstable relationship that you constantly think about ending because when it's good, it's awesome and when it's bad...it's Sh#t. Gus....all the tools are there. He has good vision, soft hands and he works his Nyqvist off! The guy in my opinion could be the difference on this team, the X factor for the Wings. Put all of talent together with a healthy dose of self confidence and he can EASILY score 20+ goals. The flip side is that if he isn't prepared or gets skittish or overwhlemee by the pace of the game, it really changes the dynamics of the 3rd line!
I hope he is awesome like the player I think he can be and I hope he is the X factor for this team!

Unless Babs spread out the scoring and they looked like this

Franzen, Z, Alfie

Nyquist, Dats, Abby

Tatar, Weiss, Sammy (or whoever)

Miller, Helm, Andy (or whoever)

they doesn't look terrible at all as a second option if the matchups aren't working

My x factor goes to "the defense"  We all know our offense is going to be amazing. We finally have a real top 6. Oh and Alfie will do better then most people think he will. He is more motivated, not the lead guy anymore, and fits our offensive system better then he fit in Ottawa..  BUT or defense is young and will hit growing pains. It might be a long season on the back end for the Redwings...

agreed our offensive looks good which ever way you shake it.  I personally like one of these two combos for the top 9.

Zetterberg Datsyuk Abby

Alfredsson Weiss Franzen

Nyquist Helm Tatar

For this season only, I voted Alfredsson.

I doubt we'll have him for long, and we remember how disappointing that Modano signing was, albeit under different circumstances.

When Alfie leaves after a year or so, I'd have to vote for Franzen or one of the young guns.

According to my profile, my reputation is excellent. LOL.

So what you're saying is that Franzen is the "yeah, I know, but he's really good in bed" of the Wings?

I really want Goose to turn into a superstar. I think I'm setting the bar a bit high lol.

ETA: I voted for Weiss, for the reasons already stated. *fingers crossed*

The thing I really like about having Weiss is he's, I think, primarily a playmaker. So, he's a playmaker who can put the puck in the net. What that gives us is more than just a threatening second-line center - it opens up a world of possibilities, and room, and potential for our entire top-six.

Love it, in theory.

And unlike Filppula, he WILL shoot and has grit.  Me likey.

This offseason will determine whether Ken Holland should still be employed with the Wings organization.

Please put Smith on the Power Play!

I'm relatively confident that Weiss is a significant upgrade to Filppula and I think he is going to be a difference maker in the next few years. He gets my vote.

I'd expect him to have some pain at this point. He seems to be on the grin-and-bear-it treatment track, i.e. accepting that you may very well be in physical pain for the rest of your life, etc.

Many good points here.  I agree with most people's assessments.

I picked Franzen because he's the one that could turn it on... or not.   If he does, look out.

Money on the board:  Current total: 0

$1 for a goal by any current Wing after whom I have named a hamster.  An additional $5 for a series-clinching goal scored by any current Wing after whom I have named a hamster. $5 if the other team fails to score against a current Wing goalie after whom I have named a hamster.

Hamsters I have had:  (current Wings highlighted)

Henrik Pavel Tomas Nicklas Dominik

Niklas Matthew Daniel Robert

Johan Andreas Valtteri Jonathan

Andrew Patrick Ian Todd

Jordin Damien Gustav James
