Next Stage of Prospects: Who Makes the Cut?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

All the debate recently about Tatar's development has got me thinking. With our strong depth of prospects and the many roster spots opening up in the next couple years...who's going to make it?

This is in reference to next year and the year after. Obviously not this year. Also didn't include some young guys like Mantha, Frk, Athanasiou etc because they're just too young for now and we have strong forward depth, older and more ready than they are.

Forwards

Glendening - 24

Sheahan - 21

Ferraro - 22

Jarnkrok - 21

Jurco - 20

Pulkkinen - 22

Callahan - 22

Parkes - 22

Nestrasil - 22

I see Glendening in an Emmerton type, 13th forward role next year. He will be in the NHL. Ferraro might get some time as well but not a regular. Sheahan too. As for Jarnkrok I really have no idea. He's rated by alot of people as our top prospect and has proven himself a top player in the SHL but has yet to prove anything on north american Ice. That's not to mention he's undersized and we already have an abundance of centers. He'll get a shot in the next couple years but I see it being on the wing. I don't see Pulkkinen becoming complete enough to get a shot in the next couple years and I think we have too much depth for Callahan even though I do really like the guy. Maybe eventually.

Defence

Jensen - 22

Nicastro - 23

Almquist - 22

Marchenko - 21

Backman - 20

Sproul - 20

Ouellet - 20

Nedomlel - 20

As far as defenceman go, I could see Jensen see some time if he plays as well in the AHL as he did in college. Nicastro and Almquist might see some time as they have completely opposite skill sets and I'm sure we'll be in need of one or the other if not both for depth. I don't see them rushing the other younger guys even though they all have a higher potential.

PS. Save the "Holland will just let them rot anyways" type comments for the Tatar thread. Just looking for some healthy discussion on our next set of guys.

Quincey, Emmerton, Bertuzzi, Samuelsson, Eaves, hopefully Cleary, and perhaps Alfredsson will be coming off the books next offseason.

That sounds like a lot but it would still leave 11 forward and 6 defence spots tied up if you count Tatar, Ericsson, and Dekeyser resigning.

What sucks is that most of those players could and should have come off the books this offseason.

I'd like to see Sproul get some time soon. We could use a big shot from the point.

I think you can kinda put them in groups, organized by "readiness," for lack of a better word.

So, like, Group A would be the locks, i.e. Nyquist, Andersson, Tatar, Lashoff. (I realize they're not locks, but you get what I'm saying.)

Group B would, I guess, be, like, Glendening, Sheahan, maybe Ferraro, et al.

Group C - Jarnkrok, Pulkkinen, Jurco, et al.

Group D - Mantha, Frk, Athanasiou, Sproul, et al.

Group E - Tyler Bertuzzi

I think the guy with the most "leap frog" potential might be Mantha. While I believe Jarnkrok remains our best prospect, Mantha...well, let's put it this way: while on the one hand, yes, I can understand why he was available as "late" in the draft as he was, the only reason he didn't go within the top fifteen or even ten is that he's perceived as something of a long-term, "high-maintenance" project, relative to a guy like Jones. This is because of his "lack of consistent compete," or "Franzenitis." He needs an organization that really knows how to bring kids up the right way (patience, diligence, faith, etc.) The Wings have become, I think, a bit of a prospect factory. I get the sense that, while there's no real science to this business of development, the Wings are as good at it as anyone.

Except when it comes to Tatar.

OH YES I DID

Tyler bertuzzi, in a league of his own :P

I'm just poking some fun at the fact that he's an eighteen-year-old boxer in the...Detroit Red Wings' pipeline. (We being known for our fisticuffs.)

His skill set is actually pretty impressive, e.g. he's a really good skater. It's just a maturity thing, and that will come with time.

Haha yea I figured. It'd be really awesome if he could even get close to as good as uncle Bert was in his prime. Not getting my hopes up but *fingers crossed* :P

Forwards:

Glendenning is an nhl checker at some point soon

Jarnkrok will make it and either be filpulla or zet or inbetween. but not worse.

jurco could end up being a stud

the rest i just dont see making it in the NHL

Pulks has a small chance but he really struggles with skating, but so did hudler so we'll see

No Mantha? No Frk? No Athanasiou? No Sproul? No Ouellete? Etc.?

Unless you're just talking about the next several years, in which case my bad.

I think Sheahan has a real shot. He found another gear at the Prospects Tournament, and if you look at where he was at the start of the season and how far he's come...it's impressive. Also speaks to two lessons, I think: 1) we never truly know, 2) sometimes a new role or context can really change things (in Sheahan's case, he was the unofficial captain of the Prospects Tournament team, and he seemed to really "find himself" (for lack of a better expression) in that role.)

Sproul's defense is nowhere near NHL-ready.

I could see Calle as a bottom 6 RW next year (not at center). Being right-handed on this team is a plus.

I think Jurco has a shot.

Glendening as a depth C.

I don't think Manta is going to the AHL next year, so he's 2+ years off.

I think all of our Defensive prospects are still 2 years away. Almquist might be the most ready, but he's a depth defenseman... I think Sproul could be the real deal eventually.

Holland himself Said Mantha is most ready, as soon as he puts 15-20 pounds on you can expect to see him called up and full time shortly after.

Of the forwards you listed, Jurco is a lock for a top six spot one day, and Sheahan will probably play a bottom six role. They're the only two with the necessary size and skill for me to feel comfortable predicting their futures. All the rest have question marks. Defensively, Sproul and Ouellet are pretty safe bets, while Nedomlel is, was, and will continue to be my darkhorse candidate.

You forgot frk. I see him and jurco breaking into the line up in 2-3 years and becoming a deadly combo soon after.

Also, mantha. I'm excited to see him progress. 2-3 years for him too, he seems promising

No I didn't forget them. I stated in the initial post why I didn't include Frk, Mantha, Athanasiou etc.

I agree. I think they're going to take their time with Sproul. Massive potential though.

In what context? I would have to think that's in relation to our other prospects just drafted with him and not our entire prospect base. Still going to be a few years before we see him. He will see the AHL first.

An interesting comment I read of Holland's during camp were, and I'm paraphrasing, "Everyone looked like prospects except for Mantha." I wonder if we'll see him called up if there's some injuries at the wing this season.

That still doesn't explain what context it was said in and who he was skating with at the time. It's not a comparison to all our other prospects.

Was that not when he was skating with a bunch of other new prospects? As I remember most of the more established prospects were not there.

No I was just referring to the list given at the beginning of the thread. I did not take those players into consideration or any of the defensemen.
