Jensen out till December/January after fight with Tyler Bertuzzi

This happened during the summer development camp, and while I understand that the kids have to try and show what they can bring to the team, I don't think fighting between teammates is a way to do that, especially when one ends up injured.

Extremely stupid move from Little Bert to do that to a fellow prospect. That said, Jensen should have known better than to engage too.

Did anybody see this scrap? I'm curious if it was even anything to talk about except the fact Jensen got hurt. It's his shoulder, so it's not like TyBert smashed his face in.

Can't link to it from work but it's on youtube. Just search bertuzzi jensen & it's the first vid that will pop up. Jensen was the one to drop the gloves first actually, responsing to some slashing, pushing, cross checking, & chirping from Little Bert.

Was a very heated scrap. Bertuzzi agitated the hell out of Jensen, which obvi led to the fight.

Hard for me to be mad at lil Bert though. His job is to get under opponents skin and scrap from time to time, and he did just that. How can he prove himself he doesn't do what it is that he excels at.

agreed. yea, it sucks that an injury occurred but lil bert was just doing what every other prospect at camp was doing; trying to show what he could bring to the team in the future. I'm sure he didn't intend to injure jensen

Glad someone posted the video of the scrap, because certain online "reporters" had been making out like bad little Bertuzzi and his bad fighting was the sole reason Jensen was injured!

Yes Malik. You.

Exactly. Jensen could have easlily just fired back with a "Seriously, you're trying to start s*** at a prospects camp?" and skated away, but he dropped the gloves instead. He has as much if not more culpability for this as Little Bert. Still, not a good move by Tyler to stir things up like that in camp which is probably why he got a talking to from Uncle Bert.

Yeah, no s***.

Plus, watching the video, this is pretty much all on Jensen anyway.

I remember this happening a bit ago. Heard he got some talkings after the incident. Tyler was doing his job and was excelling at it. Like others have stated, Jensen could've skated away like any other player in the same situation. You need to learn to hold your emotions in, even when you're getting chirped at. It's apart of the game baby.

Glad to see you didn't actually watch what happened. Tyler did nothing wrong, just defended himself.

I saw what happened, he slashed, cross checked and talked s*** to a fellow red wings prospect, then after he got the reaction he wanted proceeded to injure him.

Yeah, totally went for the injury. Spot on.

Edit: Jensen learned the hard way. You don't respond to an agitator. That's what Probies and Kocurs r for.

Oh, please...

The blind hatred some people have for anyone associated with Todd is absurd.

You obviously didn't see what happened. Jensen started by punching young Bert in the face a couple times. Bert didn't do anything back except talk some smack. Then Bert gave Jensen a very minor shove/crosscheck near the net a few moments later and Jensen immediately dropped the gloves and started wailing.

Was anyone here talking like they knew what happened actually there in person? No? Well, I was there with the wife and a friend of ours. We made the trip up to TC for this (my apologies for not posting about it back then). Have pics as well (but not of the fight).

The video linked above doesn`t show what lead up to the fight. It shows just prior to it when Jensen was already pissed. Little Bert was cross checking the hell out of Jensen, chirping, and just downright pestering Jensen every time they got near each other in that little practice game they had down at the one end of the ice. Jensen had had enough of it and the melee ensued. What originally was the spark and by whom? We all won`t know for sure but it was quite obvious that Tyler had something against Jensen for whatever reason and kept crosschecking Jensen in the back and pushing him, etc. I don`t blame Jensen one bit. I would have have start beating on Tyler myself if he had done it to me. I love the competitive spirit of Tyler but that went too far for a prospect camp.

I rarely post here, but felt the need for this. I'm not sure if many of you regularly see competitive hockey tryouts or camps, but fighting is quite common. Being on the same team(which i don't even think they are yet) and it being a "prospect camp" has nothing to do with it. In this case it's just unfortunate that an injury occurred.

I agree with you. There is nothing to be gained from preseason agitation / intrasquad fighting. If a coach needs to see you goad s teammate and then fight him, you're not going to make it. Do you think Kocur or Probert had to beat up Konstantinov so the coaches knew they could fight? They know by now what Bert 2 brings to the table. He should not be instigating his teammates.

You think an 18 year old who's never played higher than the CHL has nothing to prove?

First, he's new to the organization and has to show where he stacks up against our other prospects. Second, Bertuzzi is not big at all by NHL standards and will be expected to: hit, agitate, and fight. Add that to the pressure of being a 2nd round draft choice, and add that to the pressure of the name on his back. I'm sure some among the Wings - and this forum - believe he was only drafted so high because of his uncle, or that it at least influenced the decision. All our prospects have a lot to prove, particularly Bertuzzi.

It's also his job. He agitates. That's what he's good at, and it was made pretty clear by the Wings that that's what they brought him in for and wanted out of him. Did you want him to skate around like a plug and just go through the motions? He's a professional athlete at his first ever NHL prospect camp. He did what he does best, gets under the skin of an opposing defender almost 5 years his senior.

Regardless of whether you thought he was too aggressive, he did not start the fight. He did not attempt to injury anyone. All he did was chirp and push Jensen around. If anything this incident should be demerit on Jensen. He lost his cool under pressure, chose to initiate the fight, and got injured for that choice. Lesson learned: Don't let the Marchand's, Raymonds, Avery's, and Bertuzzi's of the world get to you or your probably going to make dumb decisions on the ice. Like losing your composure and getting a dumb injury for it.

I believe it was Jalen Rose who used to research his opponents personal lives before games so he could chirp them about it and get in their heads. IMO, smack talk is far worse in hockey. If Jensen can't handle the heat he needs to get out of the kitchen.

When it comes down to it, I'm sure the choice words management had for Bertuzzi was that he needs to make peace with Jensen off the ice.

Please! Injuries happen. Fellow Red Wings prospect, really? These guys are fighting for a limited number of spots. They are not team mates and they dont give a s*** about being drafted by the same organization till they make the team, nor should they. 1-0 Tyler Bertuzzi.

If you make a name for yourself playing rough and being an agitator, and it gets you drafted, that team drafted you as an agitator.

What were the expectations here, Bert JR. shows up to camp and is supposed to flush away everything that got him there to begin with? The reason why he was drafted?

If you work in a warehouse, you interview a potential manager, they show you their managing skills to get hired. You interview a potential electrician they show you their electrician skills to get hired.

The manager doesn't show you how well he can widdle wood, or the electrician their cooking skills. It's irrelevant to why they are their applying to begin with to fill that company's needs.

You draft a goon they show you your goon skills to try and make the team, the camp is the interview process. If you show up as a goon and pretend to be a skilled hockey player you sit unemployed for a long time. Bert Jr. did nothing wrong, injuries happen, it's the nature of physical sports. The entire point of being at a prospect camp is to show off your skill set, regardless if it's a scorer, a playmaker, or an agitator.
