Roster decisions, LTIR not an option til Tuesday

As we all know, the Wings are over the roster limit and the salary cap going into the season. The roster needs to be whittled down to 23, and the payroll to under $64.3M, by Monday afternoon. Long-term injured reserve cannot be utilized until after the roster deadline.

The players called up for today's game (Jurco, Ouellet, Sheahan, Glendening, Sproul, Pulkkinen, Coreau) will be sent down, as will Almquist. Paetsch and Hoggan will be released from their PTOs. I would also assume that Mrazek (who will start as Howard's backup with Gustavsson hurt), Nyquist, and DeKeyser (because they don't have to clear waivers) will be sent down also, even if just paper transactions. Willie Coetzee is still on the roster, I'm guessing it's because he is injured and cannot be sent down... if so, he'll have to be one of the 23, won't he?

Bottom line is, a couple guys are going to have to be waived and, if not claimed, be sent down (in which case most of their salary will still count against the cap). Eaves and Tootoo have both been named as candidates to be moved, but both are injured, so they couldn't be sent down if they clear (someone please correct me if that's wrong!). And can they even be waived if injured? Samuelsson is another obvious candidate, but if he goes unclaimed and gets sent down, his cap hit is still about $2.9M. They'll need to hang on to Emmerton with Helm still out. Miller and Cleary were just signed. Bertuzzi is another candidate, but with his age and back, he's a risk.

Holland hasn't been able to find a single trade to alleviate the crunch all summer. Can he find one now? NY Islanders, Calgary, Colorado, Ottawa, Florida, and Buffalo all have a lot of cap room, and Florida has already signed some guys since being sold last week.

So... who gets waived?

Teams don't have to wait to put players on LTIR until Tuesday. There are benefits, however, that the Wings could take advantage of if they could make moves to get to the salary cap prior to putting Helm & Eaves on LTIR though i.e. waive/trade enough salary to get to the cap ceiling of $64.3m & then putting Helm & Eaves on LTIR the next day. That's going to be close to impossible though imo but they always have the option of just moving Helm & Eaves to LTIR, putting Tootoo & Monster on regular IR, & bringing Mrazek in to backup Howie tomorrow. That's all the Wings need to do at this point to be cap & roster limit compliant by the start of the regular season. By not being able to make a move to get to the cap before putting Helm & Eaves on LTIR, that just means the Wings' upper cap limit while they're out is ~$66.69m instead of $67.625m, which is the $64.3m cap+Helm & Eaves' full salaries. No need to think about waivers/trades until the Wings start to reach a fully healthy roster.

I know they can paper send down deke and nyquist... Which would help some... Now sure how much were still over after that...

The Wings are currently over by roughly $2.4m if everyone were healthy and Nyquist & DeKeyser only account for $1.45m combined. With Helm, Eaves, & Tootoo all injured to start the season, there's no way Nyquist gets sent to GR, plus he only has 2 games he can play in the NHL before he loses his waiver exemption. In regards to sending DeKeyser down, I also don't see that happening because there's no way the Wings will start the season with 6 d-men. The injuries to Helm, Eaves, & Tootoo will already take care of the Wings getting cap & roster compliant for the start of the season. No need to do anything until one of those 3 get healthy enough to return to the lineup unless someone else is injured & targeted for LTIR.

Sorry I need to explain that better... They wont be getting sent down. It would be considered a paper send down. They get "assigned" to GR to come off the cap until guys can be put on IR. This is what philly is doing with couturier and some other guys. Assigned to the minors for a day, guys go to IR, and then reassigned to the Flyers the next day.

The problem is though that doesn't give us enough cap room like you said so we shall see what happens.

Expect Nyquist to be sent down, if only to help get below the roster limit and the salary cap. DeKeyser will probably be sent down for the next 36 hours as well, because he is likewise not vulnerable.

Emmerton was just put on waivers(bob Mckenzie) does that mean Helm is good to go?

It's probably just a roster move to free up space for tomorrow.

What happened to this "brilliant cap specialist" who is now the Assistant GM?

Do you expect him to work magic? I don't get it. He doesn't make the final roster decisions.

I would doubt that given that Helm is in no way close to game shape. It might mean though that Eaves isn't going to get put on LTIR because he would be back prior to the 10 games/24 day minimum.

Edit: And we have this now...

Red Wings will place Darren Helm on Long Term Injured Reserve Monday.

Although Helen is dumb and usually wrong, this seems accurate

Maybe Holland gave him a "corner office" and locked him in there???

Yes it is

Sorry, guys, I was going off of what Elliotte Friedman said at intermission on HNIC Saturday night. He said that LTIR could not be used until after the 23-man roster and salary deadlines had passed. I have also been told that is not accurate, and I cannot seem to get a definitive answer.
