Nyquist taking things in stride, with class

I have to think that he has had things going on. He knew when he re-signed Cleary that this was going to happen.

I guess my big problem here is that he signed Cleary in the first place. More specifically, he signed Cleary after all of his talk about the importance - no! The need to get younger, build and promote from within, etc. And here we are with Cleary, Samuelsson, Bertuzzi (who I actually do like, and who has, thankfully, been pretty good so far).

I'm love-hate with Holland. He seems to talk out of his butt a lot because he knows most people will eat up anything he says. (Does no one realize that he's shown just a tiny bit more than zero faith in our youth, all while saying youth is everything?) And yet, he does have a way of making things at least mostly right, and sometimes pulling rabbits from his magical hat. Probably the best GM in the league, but he does seem to be slipping a little these days.

Maybe I'm being too hard on him. (It's likely I am.) I get extra-grumpy, and slightly confused, in times like these, when our team looks an awful lot like the Winnipeg Jets. *shudder*

On the other side if we had all youth we could be like the oilers. I'll take it for what it is, Sammy was a mistake, and we have to live with it till July. Hopefully goose will be up soon, and helm healthy, then I will be happy. Cleary on the 4th would be ok with me.

Well, I'm definitely not calling for an "all-youth" team. Veteran leadership has been a staple of Wings hockey since the mid-90s. I'd just like to see a little more youth, especially when that's supposed to be The Big Thing going forward. I'm not at all opposed to dressing veterans, but when you've got a situation like this one, where Nyquist is clearly one of our better forwards, and Cleary and Samuelsson would probably be in the AHL if this were any other organization...it's silly. And it may be costing us valuable points - so, actually, "silly" may not be the right word for it....

I dissagree. Look at our young D. That shows trust. We let bought a veteran in Coliacovo in order to give the reigns over to the young guys. I don't like that Tatar hasn't been playing and that Nyquist in the AHL. Also, I didn't like the signing of Cleary, but there is a transition going on.

But mostly out of necessity, not preference.

We only went "all in" with the youth last season because we absolutely had to. We were supposed to have a very veteran roster last season. That was the plan.

If Holland could have his way, there'd be only a few young guys on the roster. And indeed, we're still a long ways from being largely young up front. (Note that Andersson is only up because the more veteran Helm is out. Though, in fairness, Helm is only 26. But still.)

What I'm saying is Andersson only got a shot because we didn't really have any better alternatives, due to injury. Again, last season's "youth movement" wasn't "part of The Plan." It only happened because it had to, i.e. we had no other choice. And Andersson sort of encapsulates that. (Not that he hasn't been very good for us, mind you.)

My only Hesitation is Jurco is benefiting from Nyquist being boss and feeding him.

Wouldn't it stand to reason that Jurco would have an equally talented (if not Nyquist) player doing the same for him in the NHL?

I think he has the skill to become a Datsyuk Lite but he definitely needs to work on his skating and positioning.

I think he has the ability to be a very good winger at the NHL level, but aside from some nifty stickhandling there's not too much of his game that's comparable to Datsyuk. He's bigger, faster, shoots more, is a winger and not a center, and has been compared to Hossa, not Datsyuk. But like I said, I agree with your sentiment.

Jurco is one of our most tantalizing young talents for the reasons you've mentioned. A power forward with sick skillz.

Did someone say Hossa?!? :w00t2:

You hafta wonder how much damage keeping Gus off this team will do for his career. When he comes back later in the season, and the play starts to gain speed and grit, poor Gus will have to adjust to the team like it's pre-season. Players like Weiss would get weeks, if not months, to find a comfort zone in that situation ($5mil player after all!), but a player like Gus will get far less sympathy. If he struggles in the short-term after his return, he'll probably be sent down for good or traded (aka gone). Staff will see all the reasons to turn Gus away, and most fans won't remember him except for the guys on these boards who cried for months to have the star rookie back. The fact that Gus has been stuck in GR may be a far worse indicator for the state of the coaching staff than we think. That a young rookie who nearly tipped the scales in favor of being Western Conf champions doesn't get a "shot" in the first half of the next season is asinine. It has to be downright discouraging, and psychologically may impact the man's ability to perform on the ice even if he were to return. Gus may have been the next great Wing that never was.

Remember Helm and Abdelkader? They got their shot in the playoffs. I highly doubt come seasons end that Gus will be in GR. Use up the old men for the first half till they croak...then call up the reinforcements just in time to gel and hit the hot streak going into the playoffs. To be honest, not a bad strategy. Especially in this streaky NHL we have now days.

Nyquist's time is hopefully coming soon.

With Tootoo being waived we're one step closer but they'll need another long term injury or another move before they can call him up. We're still at 23 players on the roster without him

Maybe not. Khan just tweeted this... @AnsarKhanMLive: Babcock said if Tootoo clears they'll decide tomorrow what to do. They could keep him on roster or send him down and recall Nyquist.
