Just watched a video on TSN of players saying how it wasn't right to score a goal like this or celebrate in a 9-2 game. Bulls***! The Rangers dug themselves a hole, and the kid was having an unreal night and not to mention thats a goal of the year candidate. I wish the NHL was more of a relaxed league, the players gotta take a chill pill. A rookie having the night of his life and there's something wrong with that? Gimme a break. Finally a San Jose Shark I don't hate him a passion :ninja: Wish him nothing but the best, and his team nothing but the worst :w00t:

The fact that it's a kid kind of makes a difference. If it's a blow-out and the guys who do this sort of thing all the time are padding their stats, that's not as special. If it's a kid gaining confidence, that's a lot more fun.

The players for the most part are fine with the goal, which was really sick but they aren't fine with the celebration afterwards, which I can understand. Great goal, unreal night but tune down the over the top celebrations they aren't well received in hockey.

Remember when they used to throw their gloves in the air and shoot them with their sticks?

Waaa waaaa waaaa. These are grown-ass million dollar players. For crying out loud, it's not a flipping amateur squirt team. They got their asses handed to them and they better figure out how not to let that happen to them again. Should have ran the score up more!

This kid is a stud.

Pretty much means Cleary and Bert have to score 4 goals a game each to appease us Nyquist and Tatar fans.

Why does every thread have to turn into a different version of like 18 other threads?

If Rangers do not like opposing team's goal celebrations then maybe they should consider not allowing them to score. If they can't then shut up and go cry quietly on the bench. I never understood this "not rubbing it in" crap. These are both NHL teams with similar payrolls. It is not like Sharks ran over Pee Wee team while laughing at the kids.

Listened to the players comments about this goal on TSN. I am with Luongo on this one.

Just saw this quote from Jumbo Joe regarding Hertl...

Joe Thornton would unzip his pants if he scored four goals

Hearing a question to Marleau about Hertl and whether he was showboating, Thornton said:

“Shut up, have you ever played the game?”

.

When the press turned his way, he then added:

“I’d have my cock out if I scored four goals. I’d have my cock out, stroking it.”

Note to self: turn off game if Thornton hits goal number 3...

What is thought can not be unthought.

I'm going to go bleach my brain now.

On the other hand... that would make the highlight reel for sure.

I say that right now all of the other 29 teams need to make a pact that if they are playing the Sharks and the game is so much of a blowout that they can't possibly win, they need to let Joe get 4 goals just to see if he'll do it.

Ten bucks says Todd benches him after 3, just in case.

Who would have thought the choker was also a stroker?

Might he also be a joker, a smoker, & a midnight toker?

Back to Hertl though. "Act like you've done it before, it's a team sport so don't call attention to yourself, blah, blah blah." Sure that's one side of it, but these are professional players. If you don't want someone celebrating after scoring a goal, do your job & don't let them score in the first place.

Adam Oates sucks.

Link

Don't tell Joe Thorton.

Sorry. Still have that in my head.

Anyway... about Adam's comments about Hertl...

The shot itself was crazy-good. I have no problem with that. He is right that if you do something that amazing when the score is that lopsided, and then celebrate like you scored the GWG with 3.2 left on the clock, people are going to get pissy.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't score fancy goals in lopsided games, but if you're a kid who comes in and does it, you're going to put more than a few people in the mindset of "That kid needs to be knocked down a peg or two". It doesn't matter if that's the right reaction or not; it's the one that is going to happen.

Hertl's a kid. He just did something that few people ever do. Of course he was excited. The question is whether this was the One Hot Game in his life or if it was a harbinger of things to come.

Is he going to be the Next Great One? I doubt it, but stranger things have happened in life. With all of the media attention he's getting now, he's going to need to keep a clear head so that he doesn't either get too big for his britches or get overwhelmed by it.

As far as celebrating goes, hockey players already celebrate- there are big, smelly group hugs and the Line-o-fistbumps. Sure a guy may get excited and jump in the air or crash the boards. There's nothing wrong with that. Just spare me from the NFL guys doing whatever it is that looks like drunken birds with lordosis trying to cross a busy highway.

For those reasons, I agree with Oates that McClellan did the right thing in reining him in after the 4th goal.

I do agree with you and Oates in those respects. Especially re: McLellan's decision to sit Hertl, which, like I said before (I think it was the GDT), was a smart move.

But, at the same time, I feel Oates comes off as a grumpy old geezer. (As opposed to a young geezer, or a middle-aged geezer.) I mean...respect the league? OK, y'know what? I get that. Really, I do. I can understand and respect where he's coming from there. ...But, like so many others, I feel like getting scored on nine times in one game - and only mustering two for your own cause - is a bigger "insult" to the league and to hockey in general (not to mention certain fans), as Team Defense is The Name of the Game, and Lundqvist is supposed to be The Greatest Goalie of Our Generation, and stuff. I'm not trying to be snarky or anything. I just think if you're a coach, and you see nine goals against, even if it's another team, you're supposed to feel nauseated.
