I've been reasonably happy with Weiss so far. He's made some big plays, including the OT winner (garbage goal clean-up or not).

Comparing him to Filppula isn't really the most effective means of evaluating him as a player, but given that he is literally Flip's replacement and they got similar contracts, it's inevitable. Filppula would disappear for games on end. I think Weiss is a better goals-per-game scorer than Filppula, but if you're expecting him to blossom into a 30 G/40 A player simply because of a change of scenery, that's just completely ignorant of his decade-long track record.

why don't you read the post again, I said that's the way he looks. whether he's better down the road remains to be seen. And also stating facts isn't roasting the guy, he hasn't looked good. Nobody is patronizing you I just generally recommend you calm down everybody was discussing hockey calmly and you come in with expletives.

I've got anger issues, everybody knows that. It's why I self-censor my own curse words on these threads. Yet, nothing will make me turn into the Hulk quicker than some reactionary fan claiming a guy on our team is "slow", "terrified", or like "Robert Lang" and then immediately backpedaling once called on it.

If you had only said that he hasn't looked as good as you'd like, we wouldn't be discussing this. You went above and beyond that when describing him the way you did. To use your words, you "roasted him". And now you're trying to worm your way out from under it.

It's nothing personal, or unique. You're just another in a long line of posters on these forums who makes up ridiculous b.s. to get under people's skins and then backpedals when called on it in order to be argumentative. It's actually pretty stale by now, but foolishly I still can't help involving myself.

He didn't say anything that wasn't true. Weiss has looked overall pretty bad this season. He has been slow, he has looked terrified. You denying all of that then insulting him because he said it is much worse than anything he said in his post.

Why you're not one of us 'knuckle draggers' who love a good scrap is beyond me ;)

I don't like to see boxers play hockey and I don't like to see hockey players box. I have nothing against violence in principle, or in sport, I just don't see what's to be gained from doing it in hockey.

Back peddling? I've said he looks terrible and I stand by it. If you think he has been great you are as delusional as your post suggests. I also said that I never got a chance to watch him in Florida and asked if I should expect him to be better, and you blew it completely out of proportion. Ridiculous bs? Seriously? The guy hasn't stayed on the boards for more then a few second at a time in eight games. It seems the the only one that I have gotten under the skin of is you, which should tell you something. Maybe it's cause you declared yourself god of letsgowings forum and have a problem with anyone who doesn't share in your opinion. Anyway this post has gone completely off the rails which was not my intention or frankly my doing.

It's called entertainment.

Quite so, and like all forms of entertainment, it's not for everyone.

I personally like it and consider it an integral part of the game and a valid strategy. Others don't like it and consider it a distraction.

Entertainment has changed over the years. In ancient Egypt they wrote on walls; now we have Facebook. In ancient Rome they watched lions devour people; in Michigan we just hope they don't choke.

Some say fighting is on its way out, but I hope I'm dead and gone by then.

So.... back to topic.....

I don't watch a lot of Panthers hockey. Not even the dual allure of Kopecky and Samuelsson could make me do that.

I'm hoping that he'll adjust to our style, but as long as he's working hard, which seems to be the case, he should get it.

This is the type of answer I was looking for when topic was started. And to the posters that answered my question I appreciate it.

Sorry for being a broken record, but how are people saying that Flip wasn't good on the boards? Not only was he always battling for the puck when it was on the boards, but he often won it.

He didn't seem to have that tenacity when being in a physical battle along the boards or really anywhere.

I think the biggest criticism against him is he plays far to much on the perimeter and shies away from physical exchanges.

Don't get me wrong, he's great at fetching and digging for the puck but once it starts to get physical he's not nearly as effective.

This guy just doesn't bring it.. I don't think he will be any better at 40 games let alone playoffs. He's just too too soft for my liking... And he doesn't have any other skill that stands out, no hands, speed, forechecking etc... What's he good for??? Flip was better for me.

You're going on eight games. I and others have already brought up the adjustment angle - a decade in a completely different system, completely different team and organization and all that stuff. But, again, he was very good as a Panther. How many Panthers games have you caught over the past ten years or so? Because I've seen my fair share (I like them. Not exactly a fan, but I do like them. If that makes any sense), and I feel totally justified in saying Weiss was a great add. He just needs time. Almost any guy in his situation would.

What does it matter how physical it is if he ends up with the puck, which he usually does?

Like I said he was known as a perimeter guy once he got the puck. Didn't have much ability to be physical and take it to the net. Weiss does. Give him time.

Hmm...interesting how different people see things from their own perspective. I for one thought that Weiss played his worst game last night but prior to that, he has been solid. Let's remember, it's not like we acquired Stamkos.....Weiss is a hard working second line centre. Maybe the expectations are a bit high?

He's playing a very different style of hockey on a very different hockey team. Its hard to adjust after spending 10 years on a team like Flordia. Until 2 games ago, he was playing with two stone cold pillars in Franzenfloat and Alfie/ Cleary.

To be honest I like the way he plays. He is effective on the back check, works grinder hard, effective along the boards and he hauls azz every shift. The scoring will come as he gets familiar with the system and his team mates. For the cap hit, he's a solid, heart guy with an offensive upside!

Think of it this way, he makes 1.9 million more than Sammeulsson! Anyone else thinks we got an amazing deal for a heck of a player now??? :)

I think the biggest frustration people had with flip was that he was afraid to SHOOT THE PUCK. Weiss may not look as smooth as out there but if he can get us 20-25 goal seasons as opposed to the ~15 we got with flip, I call it an upgrade.
