Datsyuk in shootouts

is jason Williams available?

You deserve a junk punch for that. Even if it is a joke. Not cool dude.

I guess Babs won't let Tatar take a shootout shot because he's not defensibly responsible?

For some reason I remember that Tatar's shootout stats in the AHL weren't very good but it wouldn't surprise me if I'm thinking of someone else. And they do practice the shootout every now and again to determine who should go in game situations so maybe Tatar hasn't been very good at that in practice either. I'm never afraid to harp on Babs and Kenny for their misuse of Tatar but not in this situation.

why would it be "not cool" to joke about a former wing?

At this point I'm questioning every lack of use by Babs of Tatar.

Looks like someone else would have an apoplectic fit if Holland brought back Jason ******* Williams.

When he was playing in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the baby Pens friends who own season tix asked me about him since they saw he'd been a Wing. I told them about his proclivity to miss a slapper from the point on the PP, bounce it off the glass, and send the other team for a SH odd man rush. Shortly after he did it and the opponent scored shorthanded.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Holland's solution was to go out and get a shootout specialist (who can't do anything else) like Omark or a 40 year old version and use it as an excuse to say he "made the team better"

at this point it probably would. anyone who can score in a shootout would be a bonus

I hear you and I assume Babs is gonna think the same, but we can't lose 9 straight shootouts and be afraid to completely change how we do them. Most of the time the 3rd shooter will get his chance, and maybe putting Pav 3rd would send a message of "you have to do better". Can't put all the pressure on Pav, but let's be honest the reason he's close to 50% is because he had an insanely high success rate earlier in his career. Last 2-3 years he can't be at more than 30-40% at most can he? He's got the tools, I just don't think he bothers really practicing shootouts much anymore.

around 20 percent..

90% of the time Pavel goes backhand to forehand. Goaltenders would be stupid not to expect it, and they do. Changing to just about anything will yield more results at this point, if not catch them cheating on his go-to move. Remember how automatic him and Z were the first few years after the shootout was introduced, always doing something different? Now Z is oh-fer-a-thousand and Pavel is predictable. That's right folks, things are so bad that Pavel Valerievich Datsyuk is PREDICTABLE. Yikes...

It almost seems like Dats literally isn't trying. As if he's, like, morally opposed to the whole thing, or something.

Frustrating. But then, imagine how all those goalies felt back when he was a sure-thing in the shootouts. Karma?

I also wanted to comment on Bert's attempts. Dear Bert, STOP SPINNING. I think there's some kind of secret NHL goalie pact that they will do everything in their God-given powers, and more, to stop bulls*** spin-o-rama moves.

I agree that he needs to mix it up in the shootout and he hasn't been good.... but NO one on the team has been good at shootouts. What do we have, one goal in the shootouts this season?

Its not just Datsyuk, it seems like the team's entire approach is off.

This may have been mentioned in here - but I wonder if Gustavsson's injuries have impacted the shootout at all. I know it is a stretch, but often times backup goalies work hard with the shootout players to let them know goalie tendencies of various goalies around the league. With him missing so much time, who knows?

My only possible explanation is that we, as a team, don't put put any stock in fancy breakaway moves. We're all about team D and such. Where Linus Omark spends 90 minutes every day practicing his shootout moves, Datsyuk and Zetterberg are working on the PK, their back-checking, etc.

Not convincing? Yeah, I know. But it's all I can come up with.

I mean, it can't be, like, nerves...can it? We're supposed to be a hardened veteran team....

I think the goalies are on to their tricks. Maybe it's just a matter of going out and just hauling off a wailing a blast at them. Can't hurt to try. Save all the fancy stuff, and just unload cannons at them. Or else maybe some new faces?

There was a point about two years ago where we won most of our shootouts and played a lot of one goal games thay we won. Now the opposite has happened. Maybe Babcock should give Tatar a shot in the shootout. Or at least in overtime.

Too much of a liability, we need guys like Quincey and Cleary out there in order to guarantee the opposition a point

No, Dats has had 3-4 moves since 2003. They were good moves, which is why people flipped their s*** every time he used one. But no, Dats has been doing the same moves for 10 years.

To be fair, pav could be a little tired after playing the end of the third then a good portion of the OT period then shooting first..

Pav should be number 2. That'd at least give him a second to catch his breath & still guarantee him a shot. Even put him third if their first two shooters miss.
