Tootoo Waived

If Tootoo is sent down and unclaimed, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE TRADE EITHER CLEARY OR SAMMY!!! PLEASE KENNY!!! SEND THEM TO PHILADELPHIA!!!

No one is that stupid... and Sammy has a NTC you'd have to negotiate, though its not like he is seeing any ice-time here.

Sammy's got the NTC, so they'd have to convince him to go to another team.

I'm not sure why he would since the money would be the same. Maybe if they keep making him a healthy scratch he'd be willing to get traded so he could be in the lineup every night.

How bad was the 2012 summer for Holland? Samuelsson is a three million dollar healthy scratch, Tootoo gets waived, Colaiacovo already bought out and Brunner is with another team. That's brutal and unfortunately still costing the Red Wings now in roster and cap space. Bringing Cleary back only furthered the issue.

I hope Eaves sticks around over Samuelsson. Eaves is a good 4th liner and penalty killer. Another body has to go for Nyquist to come up, which I assume is the ultimate goal here soon.

Agreed. Holland did well this offseason, but the team is still paying for his awful 2012. Sammy would've been twice as brutal were he not on LTIR last season.

I know Cleary is widely hated here, but whether people agree with it or not, this move shouldn't be a surprise.

First of all, it was never really about Tootoo versus Cleary from the team perspective. They don't play the same roles. The only reason they're being compared is people here don't like Cleary. But he's still a player and an asset the team thinks has value.

But comparing the two anyway:

Cleary plays almost 15 minutes a night, plays on the PP, the PK, and can be trusted at the ends of games.

Tootoo is a 4th liner who has been a healthy scratch. He provides good energy and hitting and some staged fights for about 8 minutes a night. He's not great defensively and can't be used in any special teams situation.

They have roughly the same cap hit. So from a GM's perspective keeping Cleary makes a lot more sense.

I would love it had they waived Sammy. $3 million cap hit who can't stay in the lineup and is unremarkable when he does.

I was just about to make some of these points.

Mainly: Cleary and Samuelsson are, in fact, more valuable than Tootoo. (At least, in the way Babs utilizes them.) Tootoo gets about five minutes, and that's when he's not a healthy scratch. And none of those minutes are ever especially important, e.g. special teams.

Tootoo could be a regular on other teams. The hope is that he gets picked up by one of those teams.

Okay. But if tootoo and eaves are waived and unclaimed and nyquist is brought up. With smith and big E becoming healthy and almqvist being sent back down would we be cap compliant while still having nyquist up?

I haven't heard anything about Eaves getting waived. If Tootoo is unclaimed and assigned to GR, we will just barely get under the cap when Ericsson returns (to the tune of like $200K). If Tootoo is claimed, there would then be enough cap room to bring up Nyquist, but they would need to free up one more roster spot, necessitating a move like waiving Eaves or Cleary.

I'm almost positive but someone may have to clarify this for me also; it's to my knowledge that the new CBA allows players to get called back up to the NHL without re-entry waivers. This move would give cap relief for the franchise while allowing them to use Tootoo as a 2-way contract(?). If they do want to re-use him now, they don't need to pass him through waivers again. Again, this is what I believe the new CBA allowed, but i'm not a CBA expert by any means. I do think that if he comes back up to the NHL though... he has to re-pass through waivers. THey must likely tried to move him over the past few weeks, got nothing and then decided to let him to go waivers in order to relieve cap space.

I'm pretty certain that re-entry waivers were done away with in the new CBA.

Okay thanks for the clarification. I was more saying hypothetically if eaves is waived, not saying that it's gonna happen.

Why cant people get this thru their heads, Sammuelson cannot we waived, sinces his a veteran on a multi-year his cap relief is only 100k. He is far more valuable as the 23rd man with a cap hit of essentially 100k. They tried to buy him out but he was injured, unfortunate circumstance. The guy being sent down has to be someone who doesnt dress every night, and thats leaves Eaves or Tootoo. When Everyone is healthy that means Eaves will probably get cut too.

To be quite literal, the people are getting this through their heads. It's not staying in their heads, which is the real source of your disgust.

People are talking about preferences, not what can actually happen. If they had to pick one person to go, Sammy would be first. Now relax.

That still sounds like he CAN be waived, it just doesn't make much sense since it would bring little cap relief.

and as vladdy pointed out, it's more about wishing. And personally I can't get it through my head because I'm old and they keep changing the waiver rules just when I think I've got them figured out. :P

Not a fan of Tootoo, never liked the signing but this team is now by far the softest bunch in the NHL, Kenny should finally wake up and take an advise out of Nonis book HOW to build a bottom 6, I'd kill to have McLaren + Orr on the fourth line.

Also I couldn't care less if it's due "cap issues" if you are over the cap don't sign stupid contracts (i.e. Weiss + a bunch of veterans...)

Then why not send sammy or cleary down...or heck even eaves. Specially now that Babs said that he likes toots a lot and that if he clears he will be kept in Detroit. So its seems more of just a roster spot that is needed then money because aren't we still on the hook for half or more of tootoos contract or whatever. Those are 3 players that have provided little to nothing in all the games they have played so far this season. where as tootoo when he has been given the chance has played his heart out every shift....I don't' understand.

Sammy most certainly can be waived as he doesn't have a no movement clause, just a no trade clause. From a cap relief standpoint, sure the Wings would only receive a $100k benefit from the move but based on some coverage I've been seeing, the next move the Wings will need to make is all about staying at the 23 man roster limit & has nothing to do with the salary cap. Fingers crossed that Sammy may very well find himself going through waivers soon.

I like toots cause you notice him out on the ice. he just does not blend in to the play. Creates excitement and works hard. but this is what hurts him as well, as much as I say "atta boy go get'em", I also say "What H-E-double hockey sticks are you doing out there."

I really think it depended on the team we were playing. he was great against the bottom 8. but looked silly to the top 8 teams.

Dear Edmonton Oilers,

You need a Mikael Samuelsson. He's a veteran Cup winner, has good size, plays a gritty game, is defensively responsible, can run the PP, has a rocket of a shot - WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE???

Sincerely,

LGW

There's no longer re-entry waivers.

Under the new rules for players on one-way contracts in the AHL, teams get $925,000 in cap relief (pro rated) if they send down a player who makes more than that. The player continues to collect his full salary in the minors.

I think the jury is still out on this year's signings for Holland. Cleary...nuff said. Weiss....may come around, but I don't see him as being a significant upgrade or filling the role we needed him to. I think Alfie's been ok, but pretty hard to lose out on a one year deal.

I can't say I was a huge fan of Tootoo, but I have to say he did the job he was paid to do. If the Wings signed him looking for a defensive specialist or sniper, they were mistaken. He seems like a good guy, and I wish him well wherever he ends up.

Cleary may get PP and PK time but it isn't deserved in any way. I still can't understand Babcock's boner for Cleary.

Why would we have to send him down though?

Forwards:

Datsyuk

Zetterberg

Bertuzzi

Franzen

Weiss

Alfredsson

Tatar

Helm

Nyquist

Abdelkader

Anderson

Cleary

Samuelson

Miller

Defense:

Kronwall

Big E

Kindl

Dekeyser

Smith

Quincey

Lashoff

This would make a 23 man roster. My question is would we be over the cap with this roster or no?

You're forgetting Eaves

Wings' GM Ken Holland said there is NO chance Gustav Nyquist will be recalled from Grand Rapids for tomorrow's game.
