I dont understand why we wouldn't want franzen on this team next year. Is he inconsistent, yes. Can you replace his production with someone who has a cap hit less than he does, NO. Not all players are superstars like Pav and Z where they put up points night in and night out. Franzen is what he is and at the end of the year he scores over 25 goals for a great cap hit. I have zero qualms with playing Franzen on the third line when he slacks, especially with a speedy helm healthy, but buying him out or trading him doesn't make sense when he is a great bang for the buck. This is in no way me saying that this team doesn't need a legit power forward, because they absolutely are lacking one.

OK, if I am trading Franzen instead of using the buyout, I still maintain that there may be only ONE team that would be interested in his services. The Vancouver Canucks. Especially if Franzen goes to Sochi and just lights it up with the Sedins. Not saying that he will for sure be playing with them, but I am sure he will see some time on their line and when he does, he will show how compatible he is with them. I think, and believe that he would be lights out with them. On the Red Wings, Franzen score 25 goals, with the Sedins he tops 40. I know I have pined for Alex Burrows time and time again, but it seems he has lacked production recently and as I looked over their roster, I noticed that they have David Booth. Booth used to play with Weiss in Florida and could possibly reignite a bit of chemistry if they were reunited. His cap hit is under $4.25M so it isn't too much more than Franzen's and the chemistry potential with Weiss is more than worth the increase. Franzen's contract length is more than worth it to Vancouver for the possible chemistry between the Swede's out there.

Nyquist - Weiss - Booth looks like a great 2nd line unit for Detroit...it's a win-win for both teams.

I love Tootoo, but it really seems Detroit is done with him, as well as Eaves.

we want no part of booth. guy is overpaid and can't stay healthy. we don't need that dead weight for this season and next. franzen is much better than booth. Weiss and booth have been split for so long it won't make a difference towards chemistry - also chemistry means nothing when they are both playing in babs' system where they aren't just running and gunning like in FLA.

Unless we were to trade for Steens rights before the buyout period begins (and again, he'll probably re-up in St. Louis), then I don't see us buying out Franzen. I really wish that no matter what we would, but I don't see Holland doing that. Even with the cap recapture penalties, I think Kenny really believes Franzen has played well the last couple of years and can continue to play till he's 40 (which, cmon man, he can't)

i just hope we finally see the end of bottom guys like cleary samuelsson eaves bertuzzi here and see some future guys here its time to insert some kids who can play, unfortunetly were gonna have like 3-4 guys out of waiver options

thats why i hate it when we wait till it comes to that , rather insert 1 or 2 kids and blend them in gradually and not have to wait until were forced to bring up 4 rookies in one shot into the lineup, i hope to see ferraro and callahan before the end of the year to see if they got a future here or not

Interesting - anyone wanna guess who? Mrazek as Jimmys backup? Jurco who is our most NHL ready offensive guy? Ferraro/Sheahan/Callahan who are all out of options? Oullet who has already got time up here?

There's likely to be 1 or 2 forward spots up for grabs, and 1 spot on D.

I would be more inclined to believe it's Sheahan and Ferraro that will make the team. I'm hoping for a trade though. I'll be pissed if we expose half these guys to waivers.

I would have to believe Smith would be given an opportunity to fill that spot on the PP before Almquist.

I can see him as a 7/8 PP specialist, just never a regular.

Honestly sheahan and almquist are my guesses.

Leaving Sproul and oullete in gr for one extra year together. Then hopefully they both up the next year and we will then have 7 dman long term.

Suppose Brad Richards gets bought out. Would you like him on the Wings? He's already a Holland-type player (veteran, humble, plays the game the right way, etc.) Add to that the "reclamation project" angle and I've gotta think Kenny would be very interested.

The reason you seriously explore buying out Franzen isn't his streakiness, perceived laziness, or cap hit... it's the length of his contract and his age. He will turn 34 in a couple weeks, and he is signed for SIX more seasons after this. Do you honestly see him playing until age 40? I don't. If he does retire before the end of his contract, the Wings are subject to a cap-recapture penalty. Depending on when he hypothetically retires, that penalty could be almost $3M per year. This calls for an open and honest discussion between Franzen, his agent, and Wings' management. If Franzen doesn't want to play until he's 40, they should buy him out.

It’s true. I think we sorted it our in another thread.

Weiss can be bought out but I think the Wings would be on the hook for 2.9M/year or something.

The good news though is that the Wings cap should start going down as they bring in more rookies next year (Sheahan, Ferraro, Callahan, Almquist, whoever) and guys like DeKeyser, Tatar, Nyquist, and Smith are entering the golden years cap-wise for the Wings. They’ll be extremely productive players at very manageable RFA cap hits. Think Zetterberg in 2008. He won the Conn Smyth and Stanley Cup, making something like 2.8M. Ka-RAY_ZAY.

I think if Franzen keeps playing like this for the rest of the season we can't buy him out. He has really done a good job meshing with the young guys and he may actually help them grow long term if this keeps going the way its going. If the cap goes up as much as predicted the recapture penalty on his early retirement won't be a huge deal considering how much youth is coming up with low cap hits.
