You're right. I really want the guy to break out too, I was really excited when we signed Weiss because of what he had done in Florida. He doesn't look like the same guy right now, not sure what has to change to get him going. He needs to skate harder, and if he doesn't take penalties, get more and more ice. These next 4 games before Datsyuk comes back, are huge for trying to get him going.

because what he had done in florida??? what did he do exactly?? 3 out of 10 seasons he had 50+ pts

i just hope he wakes up and can get us 45 pts a season here at this point or else were gonna be stuck with this awful contract for 4 more yrs unless we actually buy him out at seasons end (which only way i see happening is if he ends up with like 12 pts during the whole year )

or if we find a sucker to take him now thinking he  can rebound there (maybe a team like edmonton to play with the kids )

He just seems unremarkable in every way. I didn't know much about him before but liked his stats and what I heard about him, but so far he's not shown much of anything. He's not fast, he's doesn't have a great shot, he's not strong on the puck, he doesn't win a lot of puck battles, he's not big or physical, he's not anything special defensively, he's not a great playmaker. I've seen a few glimpses of good stickhandling, showing he can beat a guy 1-on-1, but it's been too rare.

Hope he finds his game, fast. I'm really starting to doubt he is a good fit for this team.

I just don't get the argument that he rightfully should have been benched cause of that penalty, how many terrible penalties has Quincey or Smith taken this year, yet they never lost ice time. Babs didn't like Weiss from the hop, and prefers a washed up slug like Cleary to him.

I think it was more because of his lack of hustle, heart, grit, effort, etc. but the stupid offensive zone penalty was certainly icing on the cake.
I've been defending this guy all season but the past few games he's not even trying out there. Is he even breaking a sweat out there? He looked like he was so close to breaking out before his injury but it really looks like Weiss gave up.

I can't stand that this guy makes 5M a year. I never watched him play in Florida but seeing him now he looks like a smaller weaker drew miller.

How many shots on net does the guy have on the year

27. Tied for 14th on the team. The sad part is Cleary, Sammy, Andy, and Miller all have as many or more. And the only people with a lower shot per game ratio than him are Toots, Glendening, XO, Almquist, Lash, and surprisingly Smith. Two of those are regulars in our lineup and Smith is only behind him by .02. 1.17 and 1.15 for Weisss and Smith respectively. So yes, he provides literally nothing at this point.

Also I got bored so I calculated shots per minute played for every one that has played a game for the wings this year.

Z = .17

Emmerton = .17

Tatar = .16

Dats = .15

Abby = .15

Mule = .15

Sammy = .15

Eaves = .14

Nyquist =.13

Toots = .12

Alfie = .12

Bert = .12

Helm = .10

Miller = .10

Glendening = .10

Cleary = .09

Weiss = .08

Quincey = .08

Kindl = .08

Kronner = .07

XO = .07

DK = .06

E = .06

Smith = .06

Almquist = .05

Lash = .03

So if you notice, immediately following Weiss, come every defenseman and no forwards. Weiss has the lowest shot per minute played ratio of any forward on the team, granted some have only played a few games and Emmerton would in no way keep up with Z in that race. Also shots/min played is probably a very useless stat, I was just curious.

Ok, this is coming from a hardcore Plymouth Whalers fan, so bare with me. I've followed this kid since he was 16 and IMHO he's VERY good. I was beyond thrilled when he signed here (but obviously im under-thrilled at his performance thus far). He's a top line playmaker with hands and on par defensive ability. Is he gonna win the Selke? No. Is he reliable? Yes. He's not overly big or overly physical, but the dude can play. I'm not one to scapegoat, but honestly he looks injured out there. tonight he was really weak on the puck, and his wrist shot looked like something a school girl would put up. I think the wrist injury is still lingering, and even Babs said something about how Weiss covered up how bad his wrist was hurting him in the pregame. I think he should be rested, cause when he's 100% he's a 50-60 pt Panthers player. 60-70 pt wings player.

Then the dude needs to sit it out on LTIR until he's 100% cause right now, he's more of a liability than anything.

you're crazy. weiss will never sniff 70pts on this wings team.

if he scores 70 points as a wing during this contract, i'll take a permaban.

I agree, He doesn't seem 100% to me, and Babs said he didn't tell anyone how bad his wrist was hurting him. If it's still hurting him he should sit till it's 100%. Be that next year even.

He's achieved 60 pts as a PANTHER multiple seasons WITH INJURY. A healthy season on a good team and I'll entertain him hitting 70 pts. The only thing crazy here is how underhwelming he's been thus far. But then again, anyone who follows hockey knows 28 games is way too low of a sample size to judge a player.

I actually thought he played somewhat okay today. At least he got to touch the puck and play hockey. That's the only way he will get better. As for what babs will do next game, who knows. I think if Weiss plays with some decent players he will at some point click. But right now he looks like a slower Corey emerton with better hockey sense and stick skills. With a verry small amount of drew miller. Ill stay optimistic about Weiss turning it Around.

2 times in 10 seasons with florida he got 60+ pts ... its nothing to brag about .. and i doubt he was injured for most of his time there

I agree, you often notice Weiss early in the games wheb in a top six role and then he gets demoted to bottom six halfway through the game for whatever reason and disappears completely. Babcock is treating Weiss like a rookie. You can see he is lacking confidence, always opting to pass etc. I dont get why Babcock will not cut him some slack. Right now there are no better options anyway.

His penalty was so stupid though. You know the refs are looking to give Philly a PP and it was probably discussed by Babs during the intermission. It's in the offensive zone and he falls over and the Philly guy clearly has the puck, you're not going to get it back while you're on your ass and he so obviously hooks him for a good 5 seconds while laying on the ice. And then they score tieing it up to start the period. Babs probably had the same reaction that I did

Pointless penalty and terrible timing

Other than that Weiss isn't doing bad things all over the ice but he's not generating anything whatsoever. Just going through the motions. He just hands the puck to others on his line so they can be the one who turns it over. A la Quincey

Yikes

In point of fact, but for a few games to start the season, Weiss has been all but irrelevant in Detroit.

Weiss is currently centering Detroit's fourth line along with fellow underwhelming teammates Mikael Samuelsson and Dan Cleary. With a collective price tag of $9.65 million, this is easily the most expensive fourth line in the NHL.

In those 10 seasons he's never played a full season...

01-02 only played 7 games
02-03 rookie season, scored 21 in 77 gp
03-04 scored 29 in 50 gp (on pace for 48 pts)
05-06 scored 21 in 41 gp (on pace for 42 pts)

06-07 scored 48 in 74 gp (on pace for 53 pts)

07-08 scored 42 in 74 gp (on pace for 47 pts)

08-09 scored 61 in 78 gp (on pace for 64 pts) mind you he's only 25/26 years old at this point
09-10 scored 60 in 80 gp (on pace for 62 pts)

10-11 scored 49 in 76 gp (on pace for 53 pts)
11-12 scored 57 in 80 gp (on pace for 58 pts)
12-13 only played 17 games, injured

He's hovered around 50 - 65 pt paces his entire career, on the FLORIDA PANTHERS, as their best player on the team

Coming to a good team like us, it's completely reasonable to think he can hit 70 pts when healthy and comfortable

I may be in the minority here but I think it'd be easier for a player like Weiss to score points with Florida than it would be with Detroit. Weiss is not a generational talent. He is a solid hockey player. Here he is looked at and expected to be a solid hockey player that contributes some secondary scoring. In Florida he was "the guy" that was the majority of their offense. Same reason for the slight rise is Kronners stats after Lidstrom left (while playing better defensively) and Fil's increase with Tampa. When you're the top guy in your position on a team and you're expected to create offense you'll be on the ice when there is an opportunity to create offense. Last minute down by a goal, PP, etc. Here he is expected to create SECONDARY offense and he won't be on the ice when we have the best chances to score. Ie most 5 on 3's, last minute down by a goal etc. Now that doesn't mean he should be as brutal as he has been so far, I'm just saying I don't think he'll ever hit 60 points with us. Probably not even 50. When you're "the guy" you're given opportunity to be the guy. Here Weiss isn't the guy.
