i think you'll find he got invited to the prospect camp , the kid the wings ought to draft next on D is the Russian

Nikita Tryamkin.

For the record, my question was actually an honest one; I didn't know if he'd been drafted (by us). I just Googled him and found that page and didn't really know what to make of it.

I will admit the compete part of Mantha's game scares me, but he can score.  I guess I feel similar in that if he has a couple years with the Wings he will have that level instilled in him.  I really want him to be a key on this team for years, so I hope he gets a lot of time just talking to Hank and Pav before they are gone.

He really does need a better level of competition. Right now he doesn't need to give it his all in order to dominate, just play a little smarter and away he goes.

Well, this 6-2 pretty much sums up the difference between German and Canadian hockey at the moment.

On Mantha.
Yes, his defensive skills are subpar, but put him on a line with two if the glut of our forwards whose main asset is defensive responsibility and a shutdown line becomes a defensively responsible one, with a scoring threat.
Pair him with andersson and Abby while he learns the defensive game.
Or sheahan and have a the grit/size/scoring ability.
I know a lot of you are saying they need to dominate lower leagues to build the confidence.
But baptism by fire may correct his compete level issues.

And i think were shying away from our over-ripened youth policy since our kids are playing so well.(see:Thomas jurco)

His offensive recognition is scary.

Alum games are scheduled between 12-5.  Looks like the WJC game is 10:30am/7:30am.

Alumni games are 1PM and either 3:30 or 4PM, depending on where you look... USA/CAN is 11:30AM.  All times Eastern.

Or, put him on an offensive line with guys like Datsyuk and/or Zetterberg, and a scoring line becomes a bigger scoring threat.  However, I highly doubt we'll see Mantha in Detroit next year, outside of a cup of coffee or major injury replacement.

Honestly this was my first thought.
Because on the wing of those two they love to roll size, but
I firmly believe jurco has earned his spot next to datsyuk.
I hope bans feels the same.
But hell sadly have to earn his way up, just because guys with effort level problems admittedly, probably need more adversity.
But still.

He's really damn exciting.

And edit.
Data and zatta are the most defensively responsible consistent scoring threats there is in the league, imo, and our future first liner would do well to learn from them.

You firmly believe Jurco has earned a spot next to Datsyuk after a whopping 5 games?! I think not!

Great game from Mantha but Canada needs to play a better defensive game if they expect to win it all. Also Paterson needs to be better. The real test will be against teams like Finland and of course Sweden

Mantha pretty invisible so far... His hockey IQ without the puck is pretty bad. I can see how he was on the bubble for making this team.

Wow didn't expect Canda to have trouble with the Czechs, I mean they pretty much steamrolled over Germany without breaking a sweat

"Earned"?  No.  But this team struggles to score, and if Jurco and Datsyuk can provide some spark, why not try it?

Canada is in trouble today... and I don't know how Plutnar isn't!  You can't shove an official, even if they somehow thought it was an accident.  I'd be surprised if he doesn't get suspended...

MY god. The scoring in this game is nuts. Too bad Patterson can't stop a beach ball right now

Yeah, not a good game for Patterson.  Gotta imagine they'll give Fucale a look next game...

Good on Mantha for setting up the tying goal though, especially after taking that penalty

Canada and their goaltending, Patterson hasn't impressed me so far Sweden and especially Finland are having much better backstoppers.
