Blockbuster deal?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

do any of us feel we need a deal to put us back amongst the elite sides in the show? i kinda feel we have drifted out of the top 6 teams in the last 3 years and dont see us getting back into the elite with what we have and what we have got in the minors in the near future.

i have said in another thread that i would put Howard out there and package him with a top prospect and draft pick to see what we could get.

any thoughts or suggestions ? or do you feel we are still a elite side.

Most teams are at or near the salary cap, so the Wings would have to take on salary and also shed salary, which is not easy to do. The Wings do not have a history of making blockbuster trades. Holland tends to favor trades that involve only giving up draft picks or lower level prospects. Most of the dead weight they'd we'd all like to trade isn't going to be attractive to another team. Not to mention, a lot of these guys have cleared waivers, meaning teams didn't want them for free, so it's not likely that anyone will part with anything. Very small chance that any kind of a blockbuster will happen.

In the past Detroit had some good (above average) goalies with the great DEF. Our goalies were paid "cheap" (beside Hasek/Cujo) but the team was build with the All Star DEF... Now we have a very good goalie who's getting paid big money and we have no DEF...

Mrazek would be traded before Howard at this point IMO. And yes they do need to shake things up we can't win with 10 4th line players at forward. We need two or three guys up front before we will be legit. Defense will be fine once Quincey and maybe kindl to are gone.

Not sure if Kenny would ever actually do a big blockbuster deal. I wouldn't trade Howard. I would trade Mule to a team looking at a long playoff run like the Sharks in return for Boyle or a similar puck moving D man.

Unfortunately, Lidstroms do not come along very often. Even today's most elite defensemen are quite a bit short of how good Lidstrom was in his prime.

I might be in the that small party that doesn't want a trade at this point. I'm not saying this team is a bust and won't make playoffs but in terms of trade we don't have the cap room or pieces to make something happen that makes us a contender.

Guys we want to trade Cleary, Quincey, bertuzzi, and franzen are not that highly desired by other teams. As far as the players with value to trade are our young prospects that have cheap contracts. You can't replace them with someone who makes more because of cap room and in the end a slight upgrade and more contract won't help anything when you still have those original 4 eating up cap and ice time.

I rather just muscle through the season and try to pick up a key asset in the off season when cleary, Quincey, bertuzzi, Sammy are all off the books... Heck only 1 of them should be playing per night and they take about 2/3 players worth of roster.

In the end there is no short term solution that makes us legit contenders this season but if we push through, bring up kids, and add the RIGHT pieces not the "panic" piece it will be a lot better situation for us long run.

Well, Girardi seems to be available.

I'm not talking only about Lids but theway the team was/is built

If you take Lidstrom off any of the teams of the last 20 years, the defense was not superior, just average or above.

trade Howard, Mule, Quincey, Kindl and a prospect in a blockbuster...what in return? Dunno...but if I am trading, those are the guys on my short list.

Howard has a NMC for the first two years of his contract, and a NTC for the remainder. He's not going anywhere.

I'm with you, for a number of different reasons.

I don't think this team is that far off from being a legit contender, and I think a lot of the necessary pieces are already in our lineup; they just need to continue to develop and learn the game. The biggest need of ours is a franchise forward (or two) that Holland can build a team around once Zetterberg and Datsyuk retire, and those aren't the type of players that even make it to the trade block.

Trades are also the least economic way to acquire a player, so I'd rather be aggressive once free agency begins and hang onto the prospects and picks that we have. The value of hanging onto those guys has really made itself apparent in the last year, with guys like Nyqvist, Jurco, Tatar, Andersson, etc keeping the Wings in it.

our defense would look leaps and bound better with just girardi. would quincey and a 2nd land him?

kronwall E

girardi kindl

dekeyser smith

Girardi gets vastly overrated once again. Are you aware of how bad he's been for the past season and a half? Do you really want another defenseman who will make mistakes on a regular basis?

Howard is amazing for most of his career, has a bad stretch of games, and now people want his head. Unbelievable.

I think it has more to do with tradable assets not named Zetterberg, Datsyuk, or Kronwall. Plus no one wants to trade a useful defencemen like Ericsson. And no one wants to trade the kids.

That leaves Howard and Franzen as the Wing’s most valuable trade pieces.

For the record, I think trading Howard is a bad idea.

I could not agree more. For me, I see a lot of good young promising players (tatar, smith, nyqvist, jurco, mrazek, sheahan etc) that with the right amount of ice time/opportunity/veteran support could bring us back to the top. Obviously we are going to need a few more pieces than that, but IMO things are looking up. Letting sammy, cleary and quincey (possibly Bert too although knowing KH he'll probably be re-signed) walk will help in bringing these kids along further.

In this day and age, no GM would be stupid enough (surely not, unless Mike Milbury takes over the Islanders again) to take any of our overpaid players. Let the kids play, and wait and see.

He always looked pretty good when I watched him. Maybe since he plays with staal. He's always playing against the other team top players. He's got to be better than Quincey at this point.

Here's a blockbuster deal that someone over at Hfboards advanced:

To Detroit:

Andrei Markov

Montreal's 2012 second rounder

To Montreal:

Anthony Mantha

Priceless. Don't you just want to pat them on the head sometimes for coming up with this stuff.
