Yzerman was not part of the 2008 squad. he was in wings upper management at the time

Quincey would be long gone if Lids and Raffi came back lol

Bummed I missed the second half (damn New Years celebration) but what I saw was awesome. What a lineup of greats. Lidstrom, Raffi and Fedorov look like they could step right back into the NHL. I thought Shanahan looked really good too. Yzerman did seem rusty but it was awesome just to see him in a Wings jersey again.

And how good was that Redmond assist to Feds??? From his skate to his stick and perfectly on #91's blade. That's the kind of stuff that make these alumni games worth watching!

Guys

GUYS

What an awesome game! Tears were shed, asses were frozen off, and a good time was had by all. I wept openly along with everyone else in my section when Vladdy came out. There were NO boos for Fed, and he got some of the biggest screams after Stevie and Lids.

Stevie. What can I say? He looked so HAPPY. They kept showing him on the jumbotron during warm ups and he always had a s*** eating grin on his face. He is my Captain and will never be replaced.

Sergei. I almost flung myself out of my seat. I would still marry him today if he asked  he definitely looks like he could still play and still has that "specialness" that naturally talented people have.

Everything combined to make it a perfect game but we all almost died from the nostalgia. It was a really special time to be a Wings fan, and I'm glad I got to experience it!

Edit: and I rode the elevator with Ken Kal!

Every time I see Darryl Sittler being interviewed (today by CBC's Scott Oake), I can't help but think of the great sketch SCTV did years ago, with the late John Candy playing the role of Sittler):

curious, why no Mats Sundin?

did they keep stats on this game?

Kind of surprised that NHL would let some play with no helmet.

sundin said something about knee surgery i think?

and this game went by old rules. i noticed that during an icing. even shanny said: old players, old rules

That was the most fun I've had watching a Wings game in a very long time!

Hopefully a torrent will be out there that shows the FSD broadcast for those that didn't get a chance to see it.

The ever worthy awood40 has the player introduction and game highlights on his youtube channel

Meanwhile, given the famous story about the two, would someone care to caption this pic?

Sometimes you sit on the bench and just think, 'wow,' and you look over to the other bench and they sit there and shake their heads, too. He has great, great skills. I'm probably not going to play with another player who has the kind of skills he has." Mikael Samuelsson on Pavel Datsyuk

So many alltime great, the perfect human as smooth as ever the guy could still play and probably better than a lot of the current defenseman on this team.

It was fun seeing the old guys play, but how in the world did the organizers manage to introduce the Wings first before the second game? Surely they could have foreseen the explosion of affection for Stevie and made him the last person introduced.

There were a number of other faux pas, at least on the CBC broadcast. The announcer started by introducing Pat Quinn while another Leaf old-timer (probably Brian Conacher) walked on without any introduction. Quinn was nowhere to be found and then suddenly the Wings were all being introduced. And after all players had been introduced and CBC cut to commercial, they came back to introduce one more Leaf player who had apparently been forgotten.

CBC also did a poor job of capturing the Gordie-Ted puck drop and Vladdie's appearance. It was almost as if no one bothered to share the script with the TV people beforehand. Disappointingly shoddy.

The Leafs Alumni weren't ready so they just went ahead and introduced the Wings Alumni first.

"BTW - Shayne Corson!"

The CBC broadcast was kinda quirky (euphemism), but that's CBC for you. I'm not totally sure who was doing the color and play-by-play, but one of them mentioned that the Wings were a team that "could play any way you wanted to play" about 17 times. After the 14th time, I started thinking about our current team and feeling sad and nostalgic.

It was all in good fun, though, so I'm certainly not complaining. Today's game, on the other hand...I want perfection in all areas, except the Leafs' execution and compete.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who shed a few tears when the Russian 5 reunited.  That was so bittersweet.

The two games brought  back a hell of a lot of memories, and names I haven't heard in years.  What a wonderful set of games they put together.  This is definitely getting added to my DVR collection.

I thought miking Manny was hilarious...he is really funny sometimes.  I'm glad to see him doing so well on color analysis for FSD on college hockey.

That's not so much a cup that homer is wearing, as a, uh, "marital aid" that you might find on, er, specialist shops on the internet.  Apparantly...
