Stadium Series: Los Angeles

So now that the real outdoor game is over...the NHL turns its attention to the "Stadium Series".

I'm honestly trying to figure out how they are going to keep ice conditions up to par. Nothing but high 70s for the next 2 weeks in LA and I'd imagine it will be there on the 25th...I know there have been other games that were in warmer weather, just curious how it will end up when they have had problems at some of the Winter Classics where it was 40.

The first official outdoor NHL game was actually in Vegas in 1991 with the Kings. The temps were in the 80s I think but if memory serves the ice held up okay.

It's too bad the NHL insisted on having so many outdoor games this year, because it would've been cool to just have one for each conference. It could've really spotlighted two very good hockey teams in a non-traditional hockey market. And in the pacific time zone at that. I'm not sure hockey writers east of the Mississippi have ever seen two California teams play each other.

Totally disagree with this whole 'Stadium series', especially the game in LA. Seriously? 70+ degree weather for a game that is probably going to leave Dodger stadium half empty? The only positive aspect for me I guess is that the NHL are trying to capitalise on the Kings winning the cup 2 years ago, but still.

Aside from that, the other reason I disagree with it is because its basically a cash grab for the NHL and they're essentially devaluing the Winter classic now totally.

Still, feel free to disagree with me. I'd just like to see them stick to 1 Winter classic and 1 Heritage classic. But there ya go.

I fall in line with the nhl. I would really like a winter classic heritage classic and one maybe two more "stadium series" games they are clearly good for the game and markets that are good but not elite

Nothing defines the game of hockey better than Kiss and sunscreen.

Uncle Gary had better wear a big floppy hat and be sitting in the shade. If not, he'll become one small blister.

When I first heard Kiss would be playing, I thought they were joking.

The beach volleyball and roller rink is weird but I can kind of get that they're playing to the novelty of a hockey game going on outside in Southern California. But Kiss?? For everyone's sake I hope they'll be wearing their makeup.

I think there may be one too many games but IMO the stadium series is definitely a good idea in theory, creates more exposure for the league but also allows for teams that would otherwise never get a winter classic a chance to be in the spotlight

The whole things turning the outdoor games and the league into a big joke.

Volleyball? A KISS CONCERT?

Why not bring in the elephants and lions and have a full blown circus? Maybe Sigfried n Roy are free that weekend and can come put on a show. Give Wayne Newton a call while youre at it Gary.

This is the NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE. Not Billy Madison's birthday party.

******* clown shoes.

Wait...the roller rink and volleyball wasn't a joke?

Well, the rink is for inline hockey, so that's not too bad. The beach volleyball, meh, I don't know, but it is Southern California, I guess they're featuring that idea since you really can't play to the skating on the pond concept. So what else are they supposed to do? The music stage isn't even a bad idea, but good lord couldn't they get a headliner better than Kiss?

How much were tickets to the Winter Classic? From what I've heard the event is 80% sold out but the $250 seats have not sold well and they're not even the most expensive seats ($279). The league is even admitting it may have priced them too high. Add to that $50 for parking anywhere close to the stadium and $20 for far parking.

Seems like there's been very little promotion of the event other than to existing Kings and Ducks fans.

The Kings and Ducks are among the two best teams in the league and playing an outdoor game in LA is a novel concept, but it sounds like the league is bungling this badly.

My favorite one was in Pula Arena. I thought that was THE coliseum but it turns out it was just a different Roman amphitheatre. Still cool as heck though.

As a Classical Studies dork, I officially deem that Awesome. How have I never heard about it before?

Justin Bieber will come out of fake retirement and sing along with Kiss. Bettman will crowd surf and start a mosh pit. The show game will be the single biggest success in NHL history.

How about just leaving volleyball out of the equation? It's a hockey game. It's not like they had a sledding hill at the WC for the hell of it.

There has always been a mini-rink at WC games, so the roller rink isn't THAT bad of an idea, but you have a real ice hockey rink...might as well make a small one too.

IIRC, WC tickets ranged from $89-279 (not including the GLI tickets they made you buy). I guess the pricing issue is why I've seen $50 discounts for them all over anything related to the NHL.

Yea roller skating considering the environment the game is being played in is an ok idea, but volleyball is just ridiculous. If it's womens volleyball all the fans out in left field will be spending all their time watching that rather than the game….

What, no fireworks show?

I was gonna mention the fireworks, but I forgot. I know you weren't talking to me, but, in true Bettman fashion, I have to stick my nose in places it doesn't belong and overdo things to the max.

Anyway, the gimmick: iceworks! Like fireworks, but made of ice! Brilliant!

Don't give them any ideas for next year.
