Heard this on the radio this morning. Makes perfect sense. Comment they made though was that he isn't even the captain of his NHL team....which is a silly comment since the captain of his NHL team isn't Russian.

Interesting though, I wonder how many of Olympic captains will not be captains of their regular teams. Can't figure that out yet as not all captains have been named. I haven't followed it at all, but I know at least Canada hasn't named their captain yet. With Canada, though, it will be a captain as it will either be Crosby or Toews.

Is St. James looked upon with disdain? This is news to me. I usually go with Khan first and her second.

It never used to be a thing, but lately it's started popping up. I think the general consensus on St. James is that she doesn't really matter one way or another, but a small minority tend to think of her as a company-line hack. Presumably because she's a beat writer and therefore tends to just report on what management says, rather than doing more in-depth analysis like other sports journalists.

Actually, I think the biggest knock against her is that she tends to make assumptions and leaps in logic, rather than just straight-up reporting the facts and leaving it at that. Also, her writing itself isn't great, and she's definitely a company-line cheearleader.

As for Dats - good for him! I'd assumed they'd give the C to Ovechkin (being Ovie) or maybe Kovalchuk (KHL loyalty). He was definitely my pick, though.

I wonder how much Sochi - and maybe the possibility of being the captain - has been weighing on him. He's been good this season, but also a bit off.

I love Datsyuk, but I'm concerned that the pressure, and the need to talk to the media a lot, go against his character and may become a distraction. We (Russia) really need our top center 110% there.

On the other hand, its hard to be mad at Dats even if the team weren't doing well.

I think Pavel is absolutely the right choice not only is he a great player he is also a class act. But to your point I wouldn't worry about the media, he is tough mentally and he will be playing in his own country where he knows the language and will feel more comfortable speaking to the Russian media then he does to the English speaking media. But the pressure on him and for that matter the entire russian team will be insane. I don't expect the team to crumble but they will have their hands full with the fans and media expectations.

Go USA!

So happy for Dats, and was really hoping Ovie wasn't the one wearing it haha

Actually, Ovechkin said that Pasha should be captain. He's played in four Olympics, and has a bronze medal. That gives him the most seniority on the team, I think. So why not?

So Datsyuk has no problem being a captain, then why didn't we choose him over Z?
