1/18 GDT: Kings 2 @ Red Wings 3 (Shootout)

Idea:

Kindl for McQuaid

4th for Mark Stuart

Andersson and 2nd for Ott

Z - Dats - Bert

Alf - Weiss? - Franzen?

Tatar - Ott - Nyquist

Abdelkader - Helm/Glendening - Tootoo

Kronwall - E

DeKe - McQuaid

Smith - Stuart

Cleary, Quincey and Sammy press box

McQuaid is better than Kindl and Stuart is worth more than a 4th, very least a 2nd or a 3rd with a prospect. He's a very good defensive Dman that blocks shots like an animal. Good choices of guys to go after with those 2 though. I'm not a fan of Ott though.

Whenever I see a defenseman go all the way down behind the opposing net like Doughty just did, I always think about how Dallas Drake would kill you dead for such a thing. That guy loved beating on defensemen.

True, but as I recall, Drake would beat on anybody he could line up. Grit personified.

I also think, and I know a bunch of people will argue this one, that we could really use James Wisniewski right now. Dude can score, is awesome on the PP, and LOVES sticking up for his teammates. He'd have already punched someone this game.

Since Seidenberg's injury Boston is looking for some help on LD and McQuaid and Boychuk could me available.

Stuart is available for sure and could be had for "cheap".

Ott would provide some balls and solid PK.

The rules were changed and it was no longer to a good teams benefit to fight fire with fire. It was better to fight with the PP. However now the hockey world has caught up to the new rules and the refs are not calling the power plays for roughing on one guy. Making the old vaunted PP obsolete. Wings have to fight back. Smith Quincey Sheahan Bert Abby need to get it going. One fight and there's no more running Howard, let it go it will happen all night and will cost the Wings this game.

Thats the Howard I miss, I used to love it when he would beat up on players crashing the net. For awhile it looked the Wings brass neutered him, but the old Jimmy is back. Hope he keeps it up. It's nice seeing someone on the Wings show some emotion.

Aren't you always advocating that the Wings don't need physical play?

Agreed on the emotion part. Kinda like how Tatar gets when he scores. I love a guy with a little attitude. Wish we had a few more of them.

Nope, I'm always advocating that the Wings don't need goons. Wisniewski is a super good hockey player in addition to being tough. I also have no problem with a guy standing up to protect Howard when he's getting crashed. That's protection. A whole different thing than the supposed "tough guys deter dirty play" argument, which is wrong...and stupid.

I wish I could "like" this more than once. This actually kinda reminds me of Phil Kessel against John Scott haha.

Rafalski check: 3GP.....3 Shots....0+/-

Assessment: Already better than Quincey.

Rafalski = too old and small for NHL.

Ouellet = perfect fit to take Quincey or Kindl's spot next year, if we can trade Kindl.

It may be time to watch Slapshot again. I wish we had Dr. Hook and Ogie Oglethorp for this game. Set Quick straight pretty quick at centre it would.

This team has gotten very Vanilla. It's nice to play with class but sometimes having raw emotion helps on the scoreboard. Just look at the number of wins the three douchiest teams (Boston, Pittsburgh, and Chicago) have.

How Sproul is doing?

Good but not quite as far along as Ouellet. Ouellet has his complete game down. Sproul has nasty offence, but needs to clean up his D zone coverage a little and he'll be lethal. HUGE shot from the blue line though and we need that asap.

I wondered how long it would take for this to show up.

Most of the so called "goons" are just protecting their teammates. The league has changed there aren't that many true goons left.
