Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

Again to remind everyone of the bare facts:

To improve this team they don't need the Steve Ott's of the world. They have a team full of players that are around the same skill level. They need a top 4 D-man (#2 would be best), and a top 6 winger (30 goal guy preferable).

The baseline for talent at Steve Ott's level will require a high round draft pick and a good prospect (Current asking price 1st rounder and a top prospect for Ott)

Holland has said he was unwilling to part with high draft picks and will more than likely not part with the little blue-chip talent in the farm.

Bottom line: This team will stand pat, when they should be selling given the possible returns on even mid level talent.

I do agree with all your points but those are still opinions. Not facts.

Why would they sell? The Wings are still in the playoff hunt. And even if they where willing to sell, who on this team would bring a good enough return to make a trade worthwhile? Unless you want them to trade Pav, I guess.

St Louis wants to be traded and only to the Rangers. LINK

Per Bob McKenzie

Hmm... Richards back to TB?

Lot of speculation that NY would buy him out, but a trade might be better, even if the Rags have to retain some of the salary. Shave a mil or two off his contract and it doesn't look too bad.

That's actually a really interesting thought...could be a win win.

I doubt Kenny acquires a rental forward, despite our cap situation. But a guy like Tom Gilbert seems like a no brainer to me, logs 20mins a night for the Panthers, has put up great possession stats on a non-playoff team, and has 25 points from the backend. Not to mention he's a RH shot, seems like a very Brad Stuart like pickup.

If Steve Ott is getting interest than about half the Wings' roster would get interest. The reason they would sell is to accumulate assets to either develop long term or to flip at the draft for more proven talent.

I don't think it's just salary, the guy has been underperforming for awhile now. And I'm just not sure he can be better at this point.

Right and that's why he will be traded. Rarely do players get traded when they're carrying the team on their back. It's usually when they struggle and he had success in Tampa.

Not saying he has the same value as Callahan. Tampa could always send a bad contract the other way(Malone/Brewer).

I'm sure they'll try to trade him, but a trade of Richards for Marty is not a good return for Tampa.

So you want to give up on the season just so the Wings can have better players to trade again in a couple months?

Just because Ott is getting interest doesn't mean he's got value. Teams might want to get Ott on the cheap but won't be willing to trade anything of value for him.

I think we have enough unproven talent to develop without adding more. Even if we have players that would draw interest, the Wings don't have a player worth trading that would fetch anything of real value. The problem is that the current Wings team is either made up of unproven youngsters or third and fourth liners.

We shouldn't be trading Pav, Z, Franzen, or Howard. That doesn't leave much to sell.

Tough to get value when you can only trade with one team and that team knows it...

I guess they can always keep the disgruntled player. But that's good for no one.
