Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

I agree with this. Would love Ehrhoff, but Buffalo trading within the same division it's going to cost quite a bit.

Murray is smart. If the Wings make the best offer, he'll take it. He knows his team is a long way from contending so I think at this point being in the same division is not all that big of a deal.

...or maybe we swing a three-way deal.

Evidently the Avs might be shopping Paul Stastny. I do think he'd be a really good fit here. But his contract ends after this year, and Kenny keeps saying he'll only trade for players that have a contract going past next year. So I'm def not getting my hopes up on this one.

No way we need stastny here especially if we don't send Weiss+ for him... Best package deal is the isles.... There out of playoff pic and will try to get something for vanek,,, MacDonald/hamonic (unlikley the latter) need to be in the package to benefit us

We also got a lot of good d prospects coming up soon (ouellet, sproul, backman, marchenko, almquist etc) and kronwall Ericsson dekeyser are locks to stay longterm ... Got kindl lashoff smith up now (I'm sure a few will be dealt) .... Just don't know if adding someone with a 7yr deal is a wise move

Adding a mark Stuart at the deadline might be better longterm and wouldn't cost as much

This.

Stuart or McQuaid provides the toughness which we need.

Pretty sure that we will see Marchenko next year in Detroit.

One of the very first questions every GM has to answer is: What are we as a team? SC contender? PO bound team? rebuilding/building? So what are the RW's? We are not a SC contender. The answer is some combination of PO bound/rebuilding. IMHO we need to add 2-3 top level talents to become a SC caliber team again. Finding 2-3 top level talents isn't that many and could be done over the next 12 months. 1 now at this years trade deadline, 1 via UFA this summer, and 1 before next years trade deadline.

The question then becomes the how do we get these 2-3 more top level talents. We have some young guys that COULD develop into top level talents, but that does take time. Over the next 3 years, some of the Nyquist, tatar, Jurco, mantha, Pulk, group will develop. It could be 1 or all 5, or somewhere in between. There are several others that could be secondary guys/checkers. Helm, Abby, Sheahan, Callahan, nastisauk, and Andersson.

So, do we stand pat and wait for the youth? That is what I expect. Not the path I would take, but it does seem to be the way Holland wants to go.

I'm not sure I agree. Every team in the east has holes. It isn't like the west where there are 3-4 solid all around teams that are capable of winning it all. Any team in the east can be beaten if all goes well. This current team with 1 or 2 of the right additions and a healthy roster have as good a shot of anyone at coming out of the eastern conference. I say make moves now that makes sense. Go for ti while we have Alfie. Go for it before age starts to really catch up to Dats and Hank. This team isn't far from being able to compete in the east.

I think it would be silly to wait until we are a clear cut favorite to make any moves. I'm not saying we should sell the farm for one or two players. But if the price is right and it can make this team better now and for the next few seasons, I say go for it. We have a lot of prospects. There won't be room for all of them on this team. This team can compete this season. Especially if we get Hank back on time for the playoff run.

This team isn't one to two minor to intermediate moves away from a real contender though, They need to make at least two big moves to really get this team from 'bubble team' to 'legitimate contender'.

With everyone talking about Vancouver, how has Kevin Bieksa's name not made the rounds? Top 4 defenceman with a decent contract (4.6per/3yrs) he's tough as nails and can move the puck, PK/PP, and he's a RH shot. I'd rather give up assets for him over Edler, probably won't move but I'm really surprised his name hasn't been out there.

The player Vancouver will want back for Bieksa will start with Kronwall++.

I didn't say anything about 2 minor moves. I said 1-2 of the right moves. Almost any team in the east that makes the playoffs are capable of making the finals. We don't have any teams like St. Louis or Chicago in the east. I don't see the Wings as a bubble team what so ever. It is a team that has been decimated with injuries all season long, playing with different lines almost every night, and had bad goaltending the first half of the season. Yet we are STILL in a playoff spot with a great chance of moving up. This is a team that could become the team to beat in the east if everything goes our way. Not saying it is enough to win it all. But hey, if you can make it to the dance, anything can happen. Why wait until Hank and Dats are in their late 30's to go for it? We have loads of depth up front. We need to solidify the back end. Adding another top 6 forward would be just gravy.

I just think this team is a lot better than the stats show, and definitely a lot better than some here are making them out to be. If Franzen keeps playing as he has, and Weiss can be the player he is capable of everything will be fine. It isn't even far fetched for that happen.

The most intriguing fact about one of our prospects is this. Big bad MM at western michigan uni has been turned into a LW. Maybe the higher brass feels he'd never crack the Wings D but could become a useful 4th liner and his size and grit alone warrants not giving up on him altogether. As such have told Andy Murray to try and change his role. If he does come good he'll be the guy keeping the flies off of the Nyquist, tatar, Jurco, mantha, Pulk and co's.

#1 If Zetterberg is healthy by the beginning of the playoffs, which the 8+ week recovery time puts him ready to start playing sometime in the first round, and that he is able to come back as he was before he started hurting.

#2 If the players that do come back are able to produce as well or better than the kids they replace. On paper a lot of the injured players are better than the kids. But, hockey isn't played on paper, and it could be Weiss/Zetterbergy/etc come back and are in a downgrade during a period that every game is without a doubt like a playoff game.

#3 Assuming every other team stands pat and don't upgrade at all any additions will put the Wings in a better position. As such, the chances that other teams stand pat is zero.

#4 Assuming Holland even makes a move, he has been crystal clear, that #1 he will not pay a lot, and #2 that he will not go after rental. That severely limits the market.

As for what this team needs to add, the defense isn't as bad as people keep making it out to be, if it wasn't for Howard being soup-sandwich the first 1/3rd of the season this team would be one of the top teams in goals allowed. This team is lacking a lot of timely scoring, and it's evident in the fact they are bottom half of the league in goals scored.

The defense isn't that bad no. But the team does need another puck mover on the back end. That will increase scoring.

The good thing is, all the contenders are in the west. Only one of them can make it to the finals. The east is wide open, and the Wings are capable to getting through.

If the Wings can add a good defenseman, I think they're going to be dangerous. If they can get Kesler and a defenseman, they'll be one of the better teams.

They would become the team to beat in the East, along with the Bruins. That would be an unreal top 3 lines either way you do it. I am assuming going the other way for Kesler and Edler per say, would be Quincy, Helm, 1st, 2nd, Jurco (something like that). So lets say that and then look at our top 3 lines:

Zetterberg- Datsyuk- Kesler (I would so play these guys together)

Franzen- Weiss- Alfie

Nyquist- Anderson/Shehan- Tatar

Pretty good.

I think the best move for the team is to do next to nothing. If you can offload some unnecessary players for late round picks, great, otherwise just stand pat with what you have.

The cost of guys like Kesler and Edler will be our youth that has resurrected our season (Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco, Dekeyser), and neither would make us a significantly better team when you subtract the guys it would cost to get them here.

Trades are good when you're looking to add that final piece to a cup contender, or if you're looking to blow things up and start over. The Wings aren't in either situation. They could possibly become a cup contender should a bunch of things work out in our favor but realistically we should be happy if we are able to make the playoffs considering the injuries we've had to deal with.

This is why we make a deal with Buffalo and not Vancouver. It would only take picks and prospects, not roster players. sure they'd probably have to take 1 or 2 of our bad expiring contracts as well (as they'd probably need to to stay above the cap floor anyway if they sell off everyone).

If they're taking back bad expiring contracts they're going to want even better prospects in return, who do we part with, Sproul, Ouellet, Backman, Mantha, Mrazek? Not to mention our 1st rounder.

What happens if Datsyuk decides he can't play on his injured knee any further and gets shut down for the year. is our team even with Ehrhoff good enough to make the playoffs missing both the eurotwins? Then we'd be in a situation where we'd have a lottery pick for the first time since its been in existence and it would be Buffalo's.

Unfortunately we're caught in limbo between being a buyer and a seller and generally its smarter to do nothing in that situation.
