Trade deadline fast approaching - who should we target?

If that's the asking price, I'd be strongly compelled to take it. Only thing is, if we lose Helm for another Center, while we upgrade the position we don't solve our current dilemma of not having enough good centers healthy.

I agree with Holland about no rentals, but he should absolutely be aggressive about anyone else. I'd part with picks easily, since the draft will be weak and the Wings will finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. We have a lot of prospects, so if one of them gets us a legit top 6 or top 4 guy right now, you do it.

The injuries to Datsyuk and Z only make it more imperative that we make a move, not less. Even with everyone healthy, the team still needs changes and additions. So make them now, since there are some legitimately good choices available. This year's deadline is better than previous ones because there are actually good players available, so don't wait for the off-season to upgrade somewhere.

And as for Cammalleri, he may be small, but he gets to the dirty areas, doesn't he? And he snipes. I think he's like Tatar. Small but he plays big.

I wonder if Shero is really willing to sell the farm for Kesler or if he's just trying to scare away potential suitors/drive up the price for rivals. I mean, I can certainly imagine him going nuts and trading half of his farm club for an elite player...but wouldn't it make more sense for that player to be a defenseman than a forward...ya know, because their defense is laughable?

They had the same issue last year and went all in on forwards.

Tatar is small and gets knocked off the puck easier than a bigger guy would, but he's also a forward and a better skater than Almquist.

Jurco still needs to work on his defense, but you don't have to be good as a winger, just ok.

Most people who actually pay attention and know a bit about hockey figured Sheahan still had 3rd line upside pretty easily.

Almquist is small, which is a big issue for a d-man. If you can skate at a high level, it's possible to overcome that. Almquist can't. Too many forwards are going to have both a size and speed advantage over him for him to ever be an NHL player, I don't care how much he scores in the AHL. Lots of guys play great in the minors but get destroyed in the NHL.

All of the decent ones could skate better than Almquist can.

Almquist 2 nhl games ... 1 goal .... So far so good

If anything I think he would really help our 2nd ppl unit

100% true. I guess I was just thinking that if he's half the "genius" GM everyone proclaims him to be he'd have learned from that mistake. Maybe not though.

Edit: I decided to check the numbers and they've got the 9th best goals against in the league so I guess they're not as bad as I thought. You'd still think they'd be looking to replace Letang though.

I don't care if he scored a goal in one of his 2 NHL games. He's still bad defensively. Lebderp was better defensively, and he'd make Quincey look like a Norris winner.

Think it helped lebderp to have lidstrom Rafalski kronwall Stuart Ericsson

just saying almquist would really help out our 2nd ppl unit ... No one could say with great certainty he wouldn't , I'd just to see him be given a chance , I can see him as a Tobias enstrom type on the ppl

They're both small. Any other similarities?

No one here could say with 'great certainty' that the Ukraine isn't a great place to live either. Doesn't make it so.

Beat reporter on Vancouver s Team 1040 phone interview this morning said the reason Edler did not go to Detroit last summer is because Gillis wanted Tatar, Sheahan, and Smith.

This is a good example of why Kenny says it's difficult to get hockey trades done. Sounds worse than dealing with jokers on Craigslist.

Also said Holmgren will really go after Kesler because Philly can't afford Pittsburgh getting him, they'll run through the East.

Pittsburgh wants to use Kesler as a 3c a la Jordan Stahl, I can't see the Diva in him content with 3c.

I like the guy, but he did fan on two one timers in the game I was at last weekend vs the Heat. :-)

He did look great on the PP, and man that guy slices the D with beautiful passes.

Kesler as a third Center? Good luck with that Bylsma the guy was pissed off at first because he didn't get first line center minutes. I'm wondering at what point Mario Lemieux steps in to set Shero straight. I mean does he really believe they can outscore everybody by such a large margin? Good teams know how to play against Pittsburgh, get Crosby of his game and shut his line down...the defense will take care of everything else the word is already out and yet Shero is only thinking about forwards amazing.

Enstrom is also a much better skater and really isn't that great of a defenseman either. Almquist would be worse and the Wings have several d prospects who are or will be better.

Well oshie/backea(don't remember which one it was ) took a shot and fanned and fell flat on his face this year lol ... No ones perfect :P

Lucky you man wish I could see so e Grand Rapids games especially now with the team stacked with such great prospects

Enstrom also is older and has more nhl experience ... And I do agree we have more better defensive prospects ahead of him but as of right now , today I think he could help our ppl

@dabura no offense taken, friendly hockey debate no hurt feelings ☺... I don't see tats as a phenomenal team guy I see him more of a diy guy sometimes it seems he tries to create too much by himself (but hey with dats out tonight let's see how the 'yoots' play) fedorov was class personified, great in both ends, especially after first few season in the league... Kesler doesn't have the same talent, hes just tougher... Kronwall isn't dirty he just doesn't give a s*** who he hits and god forbid the other team is breaking out of their zone and the winger has his head down on the boards...(ie kronwall vs voracek lolol not even funny lol) I see Bert/tootoo maybe Abby as our dirty players, Bert learned his lesson after a season suspended and almost being jailed for attempt.... As for kesler becoming a team guy on the wings, its surely possible and I can see it as long as someone holds him in check, make sure he doesn't start thinking he's bigger than the team...

Nyqvist I remember the blue, fanning on the onetimer near the blue line falling and just skating to the bench while his teammates were laughing

Reporter did also say this Kesler trade thing has been brewing all year. Torts came in and promptly stripped Kesler's "A" from him. Kesler went to Gillis and said he's ready for a trade.

Acquilini, (Canucks owner) has to be asking why do players want off his team instead of on his team.

The man responsible for drafting Almquist in the seventh round (210th overall) of the 2009 draft, Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson, has long listed Almquist’s foot-speed as the biggest drawback that, along with his small stature, could prevent him from becoming an NHLer. But Blashill said Almquist has been “real smart about not putting himself in tough situations” and noted he has learned “how to make plays with the puck in breakout situations without taking big hits” or throwing the puck away.

“I don’t think that will hold him back,” Blashill said.

From Blashill’s perspective, it’s all about production.

“He’s just going to have to prove he’s a real prolific point producer at this level in order to get a legit chance at the next level,” Blashill said. “That’s the reality at his size. It’s just a matter of showing he’s a high-end offensive player as a smaller guy.”
