Not a real surprise from his play as of late.

Tre Kronor @Trekronorse

Pär Mårts har tagit ut Gustav Nyquist, fw Detroit Red Wings i #TreKronors OS trupp. Han ersätter skadade Johan Franzén. #twittpuck

Well deserved. It's amazing how his play jumped after he found out he can still make the Olympic squad. I hope he can hang onto that confidence and drive

Good job goose. As soon as he got that hatty I knew it was a lock. I hope his play as of late is the beginning of things to come and not just a bi-product of good linemates and a chance to make the Olympics. The way he is going right now he good end up being a superstar

Damn it, they couldn't have announced it next week? The possibility of an Olympic spot really lit a fire under him. Would have been nice if the carrot was dangled in front of him for a couple more games. But putting that aside he has been money and definitely deserves to go. Too bad he is not US born and I can't wish him good luck. Just come back healthy.

I think Gus was in consideration even without this heavy hot streak. With so many Swedes on the Detroit roster the familiarity of the players with each other would give them a leg up over those who've never played on the same team.

Sure you can, it's called sportsmanship

Yay Gusgus! I wonder if it lessens the sting for Franzen knowing that a fellow Wings is going in his place.

It has nothing to do with sportsmanship, I'm a fan not a player. But I'll say it this way I hope he has a good Olympics and gains experience but that the US team still wins.

Congrats Goose!

I know some of y'all aren't into it, but I AM SO STOKED I LOVE THE OLYMPICS!!!111!!1!1!

And I will be an honorary Swede this year.

I'm with you I absolutely love the Olympics. But as happy as I am for our Swedes I still can't root for Sweden unless of course the US team is out. Then: Let's go Swedes.

I'm just the opposite. I'd rather be watching NHL hockey. I'm not a big fan of the whole Dream Team concept. I think the old way of Olympic athletes sacrificing their whole lives, the financial hardship that often came along with it, not getting any financial windfall from it The only reward was just to participate and represent your country and the possibility of getting a medal. That was the Olympics to me. The lines have become so blurred now between amateur and professional. It seems like many of the athletes train and live in countries other than the ones they represent. Also dislike the concept of athletes latching on to a sport, like the track athletes with the bobsled, just to get a medal. There's also no good guy/bad guy backdrop like there used to be with the fall of the Eastern Bloc nations.

That said, it was clearly on honor for Nyquist and I wish him well. He definitely earned it.
