Zetterberg Datsyuk Vanek

The rest doesn't matter. We could ride that line to the Cup.

It would be a good line... after we magically conjured up cap space and gave away several of our best prospects, only to watch him probably leave on a ridiculous contract in the offseason.

Yeah, but you're being realistic, which is no fun.

About Franzen - I'm almost positive he's had a very short stint or two in the bottom six.

I think the best lines with what we have would be:

Franzen-Datsyuk-Bert

Alfie-Zetterberg-Nyquist/Cleary

Tatar-Weiss-Cleary/Nyquist

Abby-Helm-Miller/Eaves

Holland should have got a legit top line winger in the offseason. We already have two of the best centers in the league. Dats and Z play better apart anyway. I am still surprised that they think its a good idea to play them together.

What legit top line Winger was that again, I have such a hard time keeping them all straight since there was so many of them this off season that were available.

I'm sorry but two things here.

1. There was no top line winger available, the best options were what we got.

2. Zetterberg is having the best start of his career and Datsyuk has been over a point per game, how exactly do they play better apart?

Ha wow... major some major sensitivity going on here. We could have attempted a trade for bobby ryan, or maybe tried out Alex Semin last year. I guess my point was Z and D are elite centers and playing them together makes us a one line team. We should split them up for the same reason Crosby and Malkin are split up.

That being said, I do agree that there not a lot of winger options out there this year, and Weiss is a solid pickup. I just think, like in past years, splitting up D and Z make us deeper. It doesn't seem that outlandish as you guys are making it sound.

This would be my dream...

Z-Dats-Bert

Mule-Weiss-Alfy

Tatar-Helm-Nyquist

Tootoo-Glendening-Abby

I would just hope line 2 would produce (my only concern with this lineup). Line 1 will be golden per usual. But could you imagine the speed and energy from line 3? Or line 4?! To me that's what a bottom six has to look like nowadays, speed and energy. As much as samuelsson brings to the table..

Splitting them makes us deeper, but that's not what you said. You said they play better apart.

How many legit top-line wingers were available in the offseason? Think on it.

The answer is zero. The best wingers available were Alfredsson, Iginla, Jagr, Clarkson, Horton, and Ryder. None of them are premiere wingers. Sure, one might say that Horton could serve as one, but his contract was a giant risk given his injury history.

Dats and Z play better apart anyway. I am still surprised that they think its a good idea to play them together.

Every single bit of history disagrees with you. They play spectacularly together; when they are split up, it is almost without exception done in an effort to generate more offense elsewhere. As a duo, they are superseded offensively only by the Sedin twins, and defensively by nobody.

If all goes well tonight with Tatar and Weiss we may see these lines when helm is back Saturday.

Z- pav- alfy

Mule- Weiss- Tatar

Abby- helm- Bert

Miller- Andy- cleary

And all of a sudden the team looks more dangerous. I hope Babcock goes with this.

No more mucking around with the C position. Here it is on Wednesday:

Z - Dats - Bert

Franzen - Weiss - Alfie

Abby - Helm - Cleary

Miller - Andersson - Tootoo

I'd love to see this though someday:

Z - Dats - Abby

Franzen - Weiss - Alfie

Tatar - Helm - Nyquist

Miller - Andersson - Tootoo

Maybe someday when Cleary, Bert, and Sammy are gone...

pretty sure helm isn't eligable to return until saturday but i could be wrong.

either way, i don't see abby and cleary playing on the same line.. abby will most likely be on one of the top two.

Alfredsson retires after this season, and Holland buys out Franzen. Keeps Tatar and Nyquist up full time and with the money that went to Franzen and Alfredsson this year, he offers Vanek. Jurco is our call up next year.

Defense sparks offense, and right now Kronwall is the only one chipping in. He has 7 points in 9 games and is fourth on the team in points. The next closest defenseman is Ericsson with 3 points in 9 games. So clearly we need more help on defense. Perhaps the solution to our offensive woes isn't another forward, but a more offensively minded defenseman?

Line 1: Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Bertuzzi/Abdelkader Why? Zetterberg and Datsyuk are doing great together, and Bertuzzi works best with them, but needs time off the top line once in a while to recuperate. Abdelkader has to slot in, unfortunately. That's most realistic, if useless.

They would be supported by Kronwall and Ericsson, as usual. They work well together and clearly do contribute toward the top forward line's offense.

Line 2: Weiss-Franzen-Alfredsson. Franzen is more responsible in the middle and clearly enjoys it. Weiss is a left-handed shot and can balance the line nicely. Kind of a small line, but they don't get pushed around too much. Would work most of the time, but might need to be switched up against teams like San Jose.

This is the line that needs the most offensive-defenseman support. And we don't have someone to fill that void. Maybe Smith will some day, but it's clearly not now. DeKeyser can hold the line, but we need an acquisition for this spot to open up the offense.

Line 3: Tatar-Helm/Andersson-Andersson/Abdelkader. Yes, a jumble. Without Nyquist up, Andersson could provide the jump to complete an energetic third line. But if Helm isn't ready, we'll need him at center. Abdelkader can play here to complete an energetic line when he's not on the top line. Cleary fills in for grittiness when Abdelkader and Andersson don't play on the wing.

Defense pair: Smith/Lashoff/Kindl-Quincey. Still a panic-inducing line. I slot Kindl here in case he isn't offered in a trade for an offensive defenseman. Admittedly, Smith and Quincey trigger terror in the hearts of Red Wings fans, but what else can you do? I'd like a more defensive stay-at-home guy behind Tatar, but it just doesn't seem to be in the cards.

Line 4: Miller-Glendening-Cleary/Tootoo. A hodge-podge line. Tootoo alternates with Cleary, saving Cleary's energy and body and keeping Tootoo from playing a lot. Babcock would love this. Has decent grit to this line.

Discard/Trade/Sit: Kindl (not because he's playing bad), Sammy, Eaves.

if we want more offense generated from the D, kindl has to be in the lineup imo.

sure, he hasn't had great offensive numbers but when I notice kindl out there, it's usually because he's shooting

getting the puck on net generates offense and kindl can do just that.

that's probably why he gets some powerplay time.
