Do we want Ouellet as the 7th defenceman, though? If we waived Lashoff and kept Kindl as #7 that be fine with me except that that would make it even harder to trade him off and that would be his path to a buyout in the summer. He would then mark against the cap for 2 more years.

I'm mostly in the XO needs to keep playing regardless camp, but I do acknowledge the downside to having Kindl sit. I just don't know there's a market for Kindl now or into the future based on his play so far this season.

This situation is on Holland. Everyone pretty much knew at least one of the d-men prospects was NHL ready going into the season and he didn't unload Kindl and brought back Quincey too. Granted, Quincey has been fine, but now the path to staying in Detroit is completely blocked for XO or maybe someone like Marchenko.

Babs clearly isn't pleased with Kindl and has praised Ouellet's play, so I'm not certain this would be his ideal decision either.

My thoughts exactly.

It does suck.

But we have an embarrassment of riches coming through the pipeline of d.

Eventually a trade will have to be made, because i doubt ken holland is going to let any of these prospects go for free, let alone three or four of them.

Honestly, Quincey has played well worth his contract, and hell be gone after next season unless we unload one or two of our d prospects.

The chances of any of the guys becoming better than Quincey is slim, let alone multiple ones.

I can see three of them panning out, but if something happens and they don't, were at least in a position to be able to get by with what we've got.

Xo is better than kindl and lash, that's pretty commonly accepted, but if we lose another guy or two on d to injuries where we once were deep we're now quite thin.

And kindls value should increase closer to the deadline, which is why you don't want him sitting until after that.

I'll be on the xo needs to play regardless bandwagon after the deadline passes if kh sits on his hands again, but something tells me if we can get a fifth round pick, or even a fourth out of kindl they'll take it.

Tampa just got a 3rd for someone comparable to kindl, and the league LOVES our homegrown players.

So something will be done.

Babcock wanted to start the season with XO in the lineup but was overruled by Holland so I'd have to assume he doesn't love the current situation either.

I've read this in articles recently, but I thought it was Jensen who was last to be cut from the D in camp and I thought it was Jensen who Babcock said he wanted on the roster at that time. Am I Wrong?

The two practices before final cuts, Babcock had XO paired with Quincey, with Kindl and Lashoff rotating in as the "scratches." It was taken as a pretty clear sign what Babcock thought the roster should be.

Brendan Savage also alluded to Holland overruled Babcock regarding XO.

We'll never get rid of Kindl if he's always scratched. He's not hurting us right now either. If it wasn't for his remaining years on contract there's no doubt a team would want him at the deadline. Still skeptical. Most teams would want a shut down guy on their bottom pairing. Maybe some team that has PP and scoring trouble. Idk tough sell

I don't understand how it is so difficult to get rid of Kindl. There are plenty of teams out there hurting on the blueline due to injuries right now. There has to be someone willing to take him for a low pick at this point to keep XO in the lineup.

Seriously, it makes you wonder. Tampa just unloaded 35 year-old, makin' 3.8 million per year, Eric freakin' Brewer for a 3rd round pick. I understand there's more term on Kindl's deal, and TB retained some salary, but still... come on. Can't get a 5th or 6th for Kindl?

Ah, I remembered wrongly, I guess. Jensen did have a great camp and there was a lot of talk about him and I guess I jumbled it all together in my mind.

To me, XO has had this spot over Kindl ever since he replaced him last playoffs. It's just us waiting to clear the way.

Holland is probably thinking he is worth a second at minimum.... Edited by DeGraa55

By the end of next season I would like to see:

Kronwall - Smith

Dekeyser - Sproul

Ouellet - Jensen

Marchenko

Trade: Ericsson - Getting older and still has some value (might as well get something for him) he also doesn't do much offensively for us.

Buyout: Kindl (nobody wants him)

UFA: Quincey - I don't think he provides enough offensively to be worth keeping over our prospects. Also I think he will want to cash in big on his performance this year.

Honestly, I can't imagine any scenario where this happens. Kindl's going to be moved, that much is certain. I seriously doubt the team moves Ericsson, and I imagine they're going to let Quincey finish up his contact, unless they're in a poor situation at next year's trade deadline. I can see the team starting the season after with something similar to this, but I don't see them breaking up the D-corps that much during next season. I think one of those four prospects is going to be left out of that group, with Ericsson maintaining his spot.

Sorry I meant to say UFA Qunicey at the end of next season walks. I didn't mean to say we move him during the year. Ericsson has 5 more years after this one at 4.25 mill and I just don't see us keeping him that long. We will have other needs by then with Z and Dats regressing further.

The way I see it - in a couple of years we will need C's in the system. We will also be loaded with young Dmen. Ericsson becomes solid trade material to a team trying to get a vet for a playoff run and we can either nab a decent C prospect or a decent pick for him. By that point Ericsson won't fit the age of our core.

Smith is finally getting his nod as an important piece to our team.

Its shocking to see how many people say our d sucks without him, when last year he made a few bone headed plays that caused a stir and the talk of trading him came up.

He's an offensive defenseman.

Who plays decent shutdown d.

But when he skates the puck out of our zone himself he is invaluable.

People like oulette will get their shot.

But none of them coming in are as important as him.

So let's see him come back, then let's work on getting hugs and kisses back in.

Yeah that's an awful defensive group ^^ lol 3 rookie defensemen would have to have Calder calibre years for us to even make the playoffs. You should watch the oilers they make the roster decisions you'd like

I don't think they'd be "awful", as much as they'd be inexperienced. I do agree that it's not the way to build a defensive corps. Edmonton is perfect example of mismanaging/rushing youth.

Re-reading it, I see what you meant about KQ. I really think they let him go in the off-season to make way for some of the younger guys. By then, hopefully, DD and Smith establish themselves as reliable players who can be paired with less experienced guys.

I get what you mean about E not fitting with the age core, but I think that's precisely why they'll need him - an experienced, defensive blue liner. I can't see Detroit moving him. You need veteran players in your line-up, especially with that many kids coming up. I think they'll be able to use him alongside one of Jensen, Sproul or Marchenko on a 3rd pairing.

I thought there was no way Ouellett was getting sent back. This almost feels like the Nyquist situation. Hopefully we don't have to play completely terrible for him to get another call up

It will take an injury or a trade.

Whatever Babcock throws out for his next new line, for the love of god say its going to be terrible. Your words have magic

Haha I know. I could not have been more wrong about this line. Ugh. I suppose this is why I don't coach professional hockey teams.

Abdelkader will miss tomorrow's game vs the Panthers, with Andersson likely getting back in the lineup.

Here are the lines the skated with today in practice...

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Franzen

Nyquist - Sheahan - Tatar

Jurco - Helm - Weiss

Miller - Glendening - Andersson

Cleary rotating in

Ericsson - Kronwall

DeKeyser - Quincey

Smith - Kindl

Lashoff rotating in

Howard

Mrazek

Justin anvildater is out two weeks with a partially separated shoulder.

http://kuklaskorner.com/tmr/comments/report-justin-abdelkader-out-two-weeks-with-partially-separated-shoulder?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

I was thinking about starting a new thread for this, but it seems shaky at best as its own topic.

But two weeks.

Why not short term ir him and call up pulks.

I'd say short term IR him and call up XO. Let Kindl sit. A way to get XO some NHL time without having to trade or waive defensive depth. Pulks will get his chance in due time.

I see the over hyping of XO has begun. Kindl has been fine and is scoring and we want to trade him. No reason to sit him for a rookie who might be able to match his production. I would like this:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Franzen

Nyquist-Sheahan-Tatar

Weiss-Helm-Jurco

Andersson-Glendening-Miller

We're winning but I still think we need to be better defensively from the forwards and defensemen. Puck movement out of our zone has not been like it was early in the season
