I just thought of something, so I thought I'd put it here.

Disclaimer: This is fantasy and I am, in no way, advocating for it to happen now.

Should you ever think that Ken Holland is not doing a good job, think about these forward lines built entirely out of Red Wings organizational talent. Jesus.

Tatar-Datsyuk-Mantha

Nyquist-Zetterberg-Abby

Pulkkinen-Sheahan-Jurco

Callahan-Glendening-Helm

Miller

And when Dats and Z are too old, Larkin and Athanasiou won't be.

That really is impressive. Crazy to see it put in perspective like that.

As far as Quincey wanting to keep things simple and play defensive hockey... please keep it up KQ. Even if his play is a microcosm of the team's, he's doing right by Kyle Quincey. I'm having flashbacks to last season when he was 2nd in shots among Detroit defenders. Let Danny do the shooting.

While we're on the topic, stop shooting Ericsson. Just stop. Big Rig... smash. No shoot. Smash.

The crazy thing is the biggest question mark out of anybody I mentioned is Larkin (the high pick of the bunch), followed by Mantha and Athanasiou. And the latter two are playing REALLY well for rookies in the AHL. No reason to think they wouldn't turn out fine.

And what's more, you can do the same thing on defense as well.

Absolutely. Guys like Quincey and Ericsson need to keep their game simple. That's when they're most effective. Same as a lot of our grinding forwards. Simple Simple Simple.

I've felt this way for a while. Quincey just summed it up nicely for me when talking about his D pairing.

We play not to lose and our style of game reflects that. As do the results.

Our defence is stifling. We don't give up much but we're also not playing on instinct. We're playing safe and taking a ton of games to overtime.

It's working for now but I don't see it having long-term success for the playoffs.

I see what you're saying. I guess my point was I don't think Quincey's statement in and of itself is proof of much of anything.

But they do play stifling defense. Honestly I feel like this style of game is more geared towards success in the playoffs than the regular season. Other teams will likely try to tighten up defensively as well and not score as much, and the Wings have been in that system all season. But I may just be spinning things the way I hope they go. :P

With Franzen and Jurco injured, and likely to miss the game on Saturday as well, I hope Pulkkinen gets the call.

I'd like to see something along the lines of...

Nyquist - Zetterberg - Abdelkader

Tatar - Datsyuk - Pulkkinen

Helm - Sheahan - Weiss

Miller - Glendening - Cleary

I'd be OK with keeping Tatar, Datsyuk , and Helm together and giving Teemu a big center to play with.

Nyquist - Zetterberg - Abdelkader

Tatar - Datsyuk - Helm

Weiss- Sheahan - Pulkkinen

Miller - Glendening - Cleary

Weiss and Sheahan both like going to the net and they are excellent passers in tight. I could see Pulkinnen getting some room to shot.

Yeah, I like these a little better. Both Weiss and Sheahan should be able to find Pulkkinen in the open.

An aside...does anyone else laugh at the thought of Doc Emrick saying "driiiiiiiiiiiive" every time Pulkkinen shoots? If Pulkkinen cranks a really hard slapper I think Doc's head will explode.

while Edzo scrutinizes his play, in search of any subtle interference, and Pierre gives us the run-down on where he played pee-wee hockey.

Haha. I actually love Pierre McGuire. I've said it before. At least he brings something to the table. I'd rather listen to Pierre McGuire than Chris Osgood any night of the week. He just seems like a pleasant, insightful, and engaging dude. The fact that he has a preternatural knowledge of minor league hockey, the world over, is icing on the cake to me.

That said, Edzo is a dick.

Agreed. I like McGuire too.

Edzo is a bias, p.o.s and NBC should be ashamed of having someone so partisan on their crew.

What did Weiss do to Babs? Jesus... via Chuck Pleiness' Twitter:

"Early indications have Pulkkinen skating on a line with Sheahan and Miller.

Cleary is the extra forward in Red. Weiss on fourth line with Glendening and Andersson. Top two lines remain same."

I thought he only looked "ok" two games ago, and he was invisible last game. He was already on thin ice for some reason, but after the last two games I figured he'd get dropped back to the fourth. I'm not sure that anybody really knows how to use him at this point. He seems to be a good passer, and playmaker, but for the time being our center situation is set. So he gets stuck on the wing, where shooting is preferable to passing, but that's not really his game. If you look at all his points so far, he's got 5 tip-in or rebound goals, and a bunch of powerplay assists. That's the kind of scoring you'd expect from a netfront dude, or a center, not a third/fourth line winger.

I really like Weiss, and have nothing bad to say about him. But I'd really like it if he'd go on another little mini-streak, rack up some points, and agree to a trade. Better for him, and hopefully better for us (as having 5 million on your fourth line ain't such a good thing).

Unbe-*******-lievable... It was bad enough a few games ago when he was stuck down on the 4th line, but now with Franzen and Jurco out of the lineup, he's still down there?... f*** Off Babcock! Did he hit on his wife or daughter or something? What the f*** did he do?...

I get that he hasn't been great the past couple games but you're not going to get him going down on the forth line. Give him some linemates that can help him out for more than a game or two and see if he can put another string of games together again.

Putting Weiss in the dog house while other guys (Franzen) continue to get a free pass, is ridiculous. If Franzen is out injured for 2 months, when he comes back, you can count on Babcock putting him on one of the top two lines, "to get him going"...

I thought Weiss was terrible in Calgary, but obviously he's never going to fulfill his potential stuck playing on a 4th line with Glendening and Andersson. Even just flipping Weiss and Miller seems like common sense, though with Babs it's often hard to pinpoint logic when it comes to playing time and managing his personnel.

It just seems like Babs makes certain players go through so many hoops to earn anything, while others get immunity or endless opportunities in a role before being demoted. Weiss can't get any traction, even though he was putting up points when he first returned.

I wouldn't be against moving Weiss, but I wonder who would take on his contract at this point. He's owed 6 million in real dollars next season and the one after. I imagine Detroit would have to retain salary on the deal. Honestly, I think Edmonton would be a good fit, at least from their perspective, but I can't imagine why he'd waive to go there.

At the very least, if he is going to rack up some points to bring up his value, Babs should move him up a line. Being on the 4th line RW is certainly doing nothing to help that out.

Yeah, we'd probably have to eat some salary, unless he went on another run and looked like he was over his injury issues and was productive again.

I hate saying it too, because I really liked the Weiss signing and the guy has worked really hard to get back into shape and start producing. But he's clearly not going to get a shot at being a second line center, and he's a misfit everywhere else. So why not see if he's got any value? Plus, I'm sure he'd jump at the opportunity to play his natural position and earn a little more icetime.

Weiss was our best player in the Edmonton game, he was one of our worst in the Calgary game. I think the back to backs caught up to him, which is why he played poorly in Calgary, but they have had a couple days off their is no reason for him to be playing on the 4th line. Give him like 5-6 games playing with Datsyuk and see what happens, you can't just randomly decide he's not good enough considering he dominated the Edmonton game.

I know it sucks to say it, but Babcock leaving might help this team more then we think. I cannot stand his decisions the last couple years.

Oh yea, Miller has 1 goal 6 points +/- 0 in 41 games. Weiss has 5 goals, 12 points, and is a +/- -1 in 18 games.

Good job Babcock. We are really generating a lot of offense these days.

I won't be surprised to see Weiss up on the third with Sheahan and Pulkkinen before the end of the game. Particularly if he gets a powerplay point. I'm not sure Mike's too comfortable breaking up that fourth line if he wants to use it as a matchup line like he usually does.

Based upon my exhaustive search of the league's worst teams I've come up with a comprehensive list of right handed defensemen that could be targeted at the trade deadline. (I have very little to do at work today)

Known Knowns: Wisniewski, Barrie, Petry, Spurgeon

Out of the Blue: John Klingberg*, David Savard

Depth: Nate Prosser, Paul Postma

*Klingberg is who I'd target. While he seems to factor into Dallas' future, I think you could get Nill to come off him for a reasonable package centered around our good young defensemen (considering Nill helped draft our good young defensemen).

Edit: And he's Swedish, so there's always that.

Is Klingberg really much of an upgrade over Jensen/Marchenko/Sproul?
