msdos 3 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Ok my question is, if Team Sweden won a medal, is Zetterberg still eligible to receive one as well? After all he was part of the final Olympic roster.. If they win I hope he gets it, he deserves it.
evilmrt 636 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Zetterberg is flying back today on the charter flight the NHL arranged to bring back all the players knocked out in the QF's. Sochi to Newark, then Newark to Detroit - don't know how my back would hold up, let alone Z's! Between the crappy beds in the Olympic village, to sitting on how many flights, I can see why his back flared up. What about Dats? Not on the plane?
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 I would say yes, he gets a medal. The back up goalie got one for the Czechs in 1998, and never even sniffed the ice for one second during the entire tournament. I think if you're on the team, you get a medal. Not on the plane? http://kuklaskorner.com/tmr/comments/st.-james-red-wings-datsyuk-delays-return-to-detroit?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook per Malik, Dats is taking a few days to visit folks in Russia -- probably his daughter who lives with her mom in Ekaterinaburg. 2 evilmrt and roboturner reacted to this
msdos 3 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 But is it the same when your a "backup goalie" compared to pulling yourself out of the squad due to injury?
roboturner 562 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Well he got more ice time than the backup goalie. He scored a goal too, didn't he? And he was the captain of the team. Those things have gotta count for something. I'm educated guessing he gets a medal. (As long as they do in fact medal! )

Sochi to Newark, then Newark to Detroit - don't know how my back would hold up, let alone Z's! Zetterberg's tournament ended a week ago, when he was forced to pull out as captain of Team Sweden because of a herniated disk in his back. He boarded an NHL charter red-eye Wednesday in Sochi and is scheduled to see a back specialist in New York after landing there today. Team Sweden's doctor has said Zetterberg is likely to need surgery, but the question is when. Until a doctor says otherwise, the Wings are hoping Zetterberg can still play again this season. Let's pray he won't need a surgery.

frankgrimes 1,836 Report post Posted February 21, 2014 The most important thing is his health, I hope he takes his time and does the right thing. If that means being done for the season so be it sometimes other things (love, health) are way more important than the best game this planet has ever seen. Get well soon captain Z 1 puckloo39 reacted to this

Those things have gotta count for something. I'm educated guessing he gets a medal. (As long as they do in fact medal! ) The backup goalie is different, isn't it? Backup goalies always get their names on the Cup, even if they didn't play in the playoffs. Doesn't work that way for skaters who play less than 41 games and no playoff appearances. Not sure how the Olympics work, though.

I guess that makes sense.I just figured since he had some contributions he would get a medal (hell it wouldn't even have to be a goal, even just getting out on the ice for a shift and playing defense or something should be enough)
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) Zetterberg apparently went straight into surgery. So that is a minimum of 6-8 weeks recovery. edit: source: http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/os2014/article18415758.ab Z texted Kronwall before the semifinal. dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted February 21, 2014 Thank god it is done with - I feel much better knowing he received immediate care and won't do further damage to try to rescue an already poor season. Let the kids develop in the meantime and go all in next year. Simple as that.

marcaractac 3,960 Report post Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) I'm no doctor, but I'm glad they sound positive about this procedure and his recovery. Very positive. Just read on Twiiter that Hank and the team is optimistic he'll get a couple games in before the end of the regular season. Would be great if it works out that way Edited February 21, 2014 by marcaractac
roboturner 562 Report post Posted February 21, 2014 (edited) Sounds like it was a simple discectomy (maybe not simple with the way they are describing a "floating piece" of disc). I had the same surgery about 4 years ago. With the disc pressing on any nerve, that pain was about 20 times worse than just the disc being degenerative. The nerve pain is what really stops you from doing your normal activities. With the disc no longer pressing on the nerve, he'll start feeling quite a bit better. I'm confident an athletically built Zetterberg with world class after-surgery care will be back to his normal self. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted February 21, 2014 Well based on the Mlive article, if we can get into the dance Z should be healthy and ready to go. We have his cap space in LTIR at the deadline to make a move now for a rental, we could still make some noise this year. Gonna need Weiss and Franzen healthy, and Pavs to pick up where he left off in the Olympics.

Let the kids develop in the meantime and go all in next year. Simple as that. I agree. I'm actually glad this whole thing is behind us now. No more speculation on what's wrong with him and we can move forward. I think Z should just take the year off. We're not going to win the cup anyway so just rest and come back fully rested and healthy for the start of 2014. I'm glad his career isn't in danger and we can still get a few more good years from the captain. 1 frankgrimes reacted to this
