ESPN says....

ESPN says we are probably out of the running for Vanek and Moulson due to them both being rentals. Burnside says we are most interested in a depth player for defense. He does says, that we will be closely watching Ryan Kesler before Wednesday and if the price is right we might try and swing that trade.

So, what do we think? Do we even want Kesler? I have mixed feelings. I've been reading about him and his past and I've see him play enough. As a player, he can be a flopper, yet can be explosive. He seems like a prima donna. I just don't know. His skills could be off the charts, and Babs wouldn't put up with much of that kind of attitude would he?

What are our thoughts on this?

No, I'm from Vancouver and we don't want Kesler. He is a diva here and the hardest center to find a good winger for. The universe revolves around him ... he pouts when the A is taken from him, he doesn't like AV, he supposedly doesn't like Torts. Let the Canucks keep the cancer in their locker room.

I would love Kesler here! He has spent the whole year on the right wing, he's fast, he's gritty, he can shoot, he goes hard to the net he's from Michigan!

He would be an exelent fit for our poweplay insted of Cleary the joker.

Yeah, I think we could use a guy or three that other teams don't like. He only has 2 years left on his contract after this year, so it's not a long term commitment, and he can play wing.

The problem is that Vancouver need a #2 center, so unless they move Edler or someone else to fill that hole, I think they're going to want a center for Kesler. Unless they want Weiss, I don't see him coming to Detroit.

All I can say, thanks god.

Would I want another good ol Michigan boy here? Sure.

Would I want Kesler at the expense of Nyquist, Tatar, Mantha or a first ? Nope.

Glad, we are out of the Vanek and Moulson bidwar neither would put this team over the top and this team is not at the point, where rentals high expensive rentals would make sense.

The whispers we're getting over here in euro land is that the wings have scouts looking at the young Russian's Nikita Tryamkin and Fyodor Malykin. Malykin's name has cropped up before, solid young centre 5'11" 198lb but i think he has 2 years left on his KHL contract. Good skater by all accounts and plays hard. I watched Tryamkin in the world jnrs and he is a big unit, steady in his own end with potential upside to produce on offence. Has played over 70 games in the K and only 19yr old. Both of these guys hail from the same area as Pav, so you never know. Tryamkin hasnt been drafted and i think is still eligible for this year's draft, and have i said he is big, 6'7" 229lb and growing !

Both play for KHL side Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg.

First off ESPN really doesn't know s*** about hockey, all they care about is football and basketball... Frank I agree with you on not giving away some kids for kesler but disagree that vanek or maybe even moulson(goal scoring touch) would not put our team in cup contention.... Particularly vanek... But depends on what we give up, maybe cheaper for vanek since he has nobody to play with now and will most likely sign elsewhere (probable Minnesota)

It's nice to think about a Vanek or Moulson, but I tend to agree - the price will be too high and they aren't likely to stay in Detroit (at least not without the Wings giving up some of their youth). I'd be very interested in what they could swing for Andy MacDonald, though, if the Isles may only asking for a 1st rounder. If Holland could turn that into a conditional 1st based on the Wings locking MacDonald up to a contract, that would give the defense a few more options moving forward.

As for Kesler, I hope not. His injuries have kept him on the top-6-to-checking-line border his whole career. He certainly has upside, but Vancouver is paying him soundly to be in the top-6 and I think the Wings have better options for the cost. We need an effective wear-'em-down third line to go into the playoffs and I'm still holding hope that they give Steve Ott a look if he's available. Much rather 'rent' Ott than overpay and get stuck with Kesler...

I think they would be better off giving Quincy back for rental and maybe 2nd conditional if both players were to resign or something bizarre like wings winning cup (if that would even be possible lol)

Stranger things have happened, and worse teams have won the cup...

He has 20+ goals in each of the last 6 full seasons he's played, including 41 in 10-11 and has shown an ability to rack up the assists if he plays with shooters, all while playing excellent defense. Outside if 06-07 and last year he's played 77 games one year and 80+ every other year and has played in all but one game this year. So how have injuries kept him as a border line checking line player his whole career?

I'd flip one of Nyquist or Tatar for him straight up, or one of the D prospects, plus whatever it takes to make it work cap wise with absolutely no hesitation. The Wings need a guy that teams don't like playing against.

Won't argue first part but would rather see us 'overpaying with veterans' torts would be able to 'count' on right away few names possibly bertuzzi Weiss quincy cleary maybe even helm with how he's been injured last 2/3 seasons I also think wed get a lot more out of a bieksa than a edler not that he's on the block or anything (wishful thinkin)

Tatar is 23 and Kesler 29 i get the fact that Kesler is a vet and has points on the board but give up Tats for him? I wouldnt and the reason for this is simple, come back to this in 6 years time when Tatar is 29 and compare the stats of both players if Kesler is still playing. Kesler has 2-4 years max at his current level. We are going to get 10+ years from Tomas, and he has only scratched the surface of his abilities.

But the Wings will most likely have Nyquist, Jurco, Mantha, Jarnkrok. Sheahan, Helm, and whoever else. Kesler gives them a big, physical, defensively responsible 25 goal a season player who can play wing or center.

Some of you are over valuing Tatar. He'd be very lucky to end up with a career like Kesler. There are guys his age putting up 25 goals around the league.

i think you need to evaluate the situations. Kesler was a first round pick that had 23 points in his first full 82 game season which was his second stint in the league the same as Tatar, who to date in his first full season has 26 points in 51 games. Kesler has had 2 seasons when he hit over 70 points the rest of his career he hasnt topped 60 points. If we could come back in 9 years i would wager that Tatar will have had a similar if not better career than Kesler. I would suggest you are under-valuing Tatar if anything.

There is the old saying: a bird in hand is better than 2 in the bush. we have several young F's that we HOPE will become good players in the NHL some day. Then there are guys like Kesler that ARE good players in the NHL already.

Now I doubt we get him or any other top player that is rumored to be available. Don't think Holland has the stones to do it. I would LOVE to be wrong.

Kesler has had two hip surgeries, a shoulder surgery (all labrum tears), and a broken foot. 4 injuries in 8 years may not have cost him a ton of games, yet, but it also doesn't shout 'durable' for a gritty player like him.

He just seems a little expensive for what he brings to the table. I agree he's a good 2-way center, but his production has fallen off since the 10-11 season you referenced (1 shoulder surgery, 1 hip surgery, and a broken foot later). I don't think he's ever going to become a #1 center and the Wings ultimately need a guy who can put up numbers regardless of who skates with him on the second line as long as Datsyuk is around to log minutes on the top line. Weiss should have been that guy, but this year isn't what was expected (obviously).

I'd love for the Wings to get a guy who opponents don't like to face, but not if it's going to cost too much...
