Legwand to Detroit for Eaves, Jarnkrok + cond 3rd/2nd

He also said that when Datsyuk was day to day and Helm was not injured.

If Weiss cannot allow us to play D and Z together, Legwand will while providing us with good defense and offense.

Again, what does he gain by doing this?

Short term: The Wings are in a marginally better position to lock up the 8th seed. And again as I keep saying, get bounced by one of the top seeds.

Long term: The prospect pool is weaker by a factor of 2. First they lose a top prospect, and second they lose a chance at the highest draft pick since Marty Lapointe.

Seems like a bad deal no matter how you spin it.

Ok, well I think I may be the ONLY person here that feels like this trade is solid. in fact, I think it was necessary.

First off, we are stacked with young guys. Nobody would have predicted the success of Tats, Sheahan and Jerks for this years. We have a lot of young talent in the system but the truth is, I have to believe that the organization saw something in Calle that they werent comfortable with. With all of the injuries, if they had faith in the kid, he would have been here by now. That's the truth

Secondly, we are anemic down the middle. The game in NJ exposed Andersson. If we have ANY prayer of making the playoffs, we had to address the issue right now. July is too late. Legwand is a good hockey player that has consistently performed under pressure. The guy is a defensive forward who can help our issues with D. he also hasnt had a lot if offensive help in Nashville and he's a Michigan boy so I imagine he will be highly motivated to perform.

With the re-injury to Helm, DATSYUK out 3 weeks, Weiss's setback and Zetty gone until the playoffs, I honestly believe that we don't make the playoffs unless we get a solid 2 way guy. Perhaps before the news about Dats and Helm, we didn't need to address the issue but I don't feel the team had a choice.

I'm sure that a lot if you you are wishing that the " thumbs down" button was still available but I'm saying that although I don't like loosing Calle, I do like the trade, even if it is a bit steep. IMO, without it, we don't make the playoffs....with it, we have a great good chance.

This trade gives the team a shot at staying in the hunt until we get players back. If Weiss and helm return sooner rather than later, at least we can ice a good enough roster to win some games while dats is out. If dats can play in three weeks we have a solid forward group to finish off the season and hopefully go into the playoffs with.

Sure on paper we probably overpaid. But hey, I'm sure management knows something that we don't. I'm thankful that they didn't give up on the season and didn't sell the farm to do so.

Its a bummer we didn't get a top four dman, but this defense got the job done in the home stretch last year and I have faith they can do it again with a little luck with the injured players.

We got a center who can contribute on both ends of the ice. It gets a fourth line center off of our top line. Its also a player who wants to be here, and has shown in the past he can be clutch when called upon. Here is to hoping a lot of crow is eaten by seasons end!

Won't matter if we make it In the playoffs and get outed first round .... We paid a high price for legwand ... No offence to him .... He's the guy I wanted today .... But the reason I wanted him was I didn't wanna give up too much , was thinking someone like Ferraro almquist Callahan + a pick .... Janrkrok was a big price to pay

Like I said before he better retire from hockey and go dance

Look, I'm happy that we got Legwand. But, IMHO, this whole thing with Jarnkrok smells...

https://twitter.com/steveamorose/statuses/441332158477520896

Regarding Jarnkrok reportedly thinking of heading back to Sweden after this season, it was news to Wings Asst GM Ryan Martin.

Jarnkrok projects as a top-six center, and a good one. He's struggled, but hey, first-year NA pros are allowed to struggle. Andersson isn't going to be a top-six center, Sheahan will probably settle in as a good third-line center, and Helm is a third-line center. None of the centers in Grand Rapids project as top-sixers. Speaking of Sheahan, remember when he was supposed to be a career fourth-liner in the NHL? Remember when the DUI incident made us really wonder if he'd pan out? Remember when Tatar threatened to bolt for the KHL?

meh

He is exactly that until he proves anything. Guess there's no such thing as free agency and draft either, the Wings are doomed without a young center. :dozing:

People will forget about this in a couple months. Same thing happened when Pittsburgh traded Morrow away, now they don't even care. It could have been worse, like trading Tatar, Jurco, or Nyquist for something that wouldn't help us either.

I wanted Vanek alot, but we don't need wingers and he wouldn't sign here again it's pretty obvious he's going to Minny if they don't lock up Moulson.

Elite players don't make it to free agency anymore. And if they do, it's a Parise/Suter bidding war.

Young, defensively sound, top 6 centers don't grow on trees.

Yet Jarnkrok was already elite? Jeez, give him Crosby money already!

What if we draft a great potential #1 center with this years draft pick (which is exactly what Jarnkrok was).

The chances of drafting an a potential #1 center that will be NHL ready by the time the Wings need him (in the next 4 years) is exponentially lower if they do make the playoffs. Remember it took 4 years to get Jarnkrok and Sheahan to where they are today.

I agree, and I am not completely sold on the deal myself. However, some are acting like we just traded Zetterberg for Legwand.

Until Jarnkrok plays a #1 center roll, and produces at the NHL level I don't know why people are so upset. He is a legit player, and can hold down the 2nd line when D and Z are back or even move to the 3rd. Wings will most likely be injured again next year, and it will be nice to have him to cover.

Next year?:

Z-Dats-Mule (just insane)

Nyquist-Legwand-Alfie (good scoring)

Jurco-Sheahan-Tatar (kids)

Abby-Weiss-Miller (deep 4th line)

Obviously this is an "if theyre all healthy" pipedream. But i think next year that group could win a cup.

I didn't mean Jarnkrok was already elite. But if we're splurging on free agency for a top 6 center, I sure hope he'd be elite. Besides, he'd already be at least 27 years old.

And you admit that Jarnkrok could be a great potential #1 center. It just doesn't make sense to replace him with an 18 year old in this draft. He'd still be a long ways away and yet another uncertainty. By the time he's ready, both Datsyuk and Zetterberg could be gone.

I don't think Jarnkrok will ever end up being a #1 center in this league, but I do think he has the potential to be a better version of Filppula. He's already known to be a great defensive forward and an extremely hard worker. Now we gave him away for Legwand, who may not have a long term future with this team. It's a tough sell to spend money on both Weiss and Legwand next season.

Again, if the Wings are satisfied with being the new mid 2000s flames, and think making the playoffs is enough, they will not be able to draft a center in time to replace Z or D. It will be Nik Lidstrom all over again, where when they retire there is no one remotely able to step into his role.

Why ? The cap is going up 7+ million next year and we have lots of room. Legwand probably makes less then 5 million/per if he signs with the Wings.

If Legwand doesn't sign with the Wings, it is a disaster I agree.

The Wings didn't make that very easy last year for the high seeds.

Weiss on 4th line is a complete waste, he's not that type of player. If Kenny resign Legwand, which I'm sure he'll do, Weiss would need to be traded, which I'm sure he won't do.

Guest Playmaker

As far as making the playoffs, it's not just a record thing, it's a business thing. The players make no more money in the playoffs, yet the owners do. Even if they got swept in the first round, two home games is 2+ million dollars for the organization.

Are you okay with about $10 million committed to Weiss and Legwand?

Besides, where does he fit next season if Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Weiss and Helm are all healthy?

There's definitely half a pint of beer in the pint glass: wether it's half full or half empty is up to you.

I'm going with half full. A playoff season missed does not help Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Andy, Weiss , Jurco, and Smith gain valuable playoff experience. Legwand helps us get by until the Calvary returns, then once the playoffs begin, as we saw last year, all bets are off. If healthy, we've actually got a damn good lineup.

Somehow, with no top 20 picks since 1991, our prospects managed to win the Calder Cup and produce the Butterfield winner . Jarnkrok is no Pulkkinen, and it's not like we don't have guys in the pipeline ahead and behind him.

If Legwand re-signs for another couple seasons then it will be a very fair price.

However if this is a rental and we only get him for around 20 games then it will be a joke.

Thing is, where does Legwand slot into a healthy lineup? Datsyuk, Weiss, Helm, Sheahan, Andersson, Glendening...
