Weiss - who would take him next season and does he have a full NTC

I don't understand what the big deal is. If a grown man wants to spend all his free time thinking up nicknames and line combinations for a bunch of kids that he's never met, that's his right. And I don't think there's anything creepy or sad about it at all. AT ALL.

And I'm not being sarcastic. Not even a little.

That's fine, but a little translation for those of us who don't know who 'barbie's is would have been useful. Otherwise we can't appreciate the post fully...

folks get charged because Helm is so fragile, I sometimes call him Barbie Doll. The rest you all know. No biggie, the nicknames weren't my point.

Franzen doesn't score except for about 5 weeks out of the season, that is why he is on the 4th line. Pretty sad when 4 or 5 pure rookies have past you on the importance chart.

Right, but they were so bad that I couldn't focus on anything else.

Just because you don't like Franzen doesn't mean he should be on the 4th line. The fact is, he's better than 9 other players on this team. Or at the very least, he's better than 6 other forwards. So either way, he will be on the 1st or 2nd line.

lol, nicknames weren't my point, the point was Weiss on the wing and how it would look in the lineup, but just because I made up some nicknames (which I have been using from time to time anyway) that seems to be the only thing folks focused on. Which is fine. No more nick names from me.

And the Johan Franzen argument is not even worth brining up. Gustav Nyquist is far better than he is and deserves to be in the top 6 over him. Tomas Tatar and Riley Sheahan both are playing better than him as well. And BTW will be far better in the league than Johan Franzen can hope to be. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg of course ARE your top line. I am tired of giving Johan Franzen a pass because of what he did over 6 years ago and has yet to do it again. He is washed up, broke down and still only shows up for 2 months total of the entire season. He has become toxic waste since he signed his serious contract and doesn't deserve to be in the Red Wings sweater. That is my opinion and nothing is going to change it. I have given him plenty of opportunities to change my mind, yet he still floats around and is invisible most of the season, and when we need "playoff Johan Franzen" to make an appearance he doesn't. He just isn't as good as most of you are trying to convince yourself that he is. And while we are on that, neither is James Howard. Every time he needs to make that big save in the big game, he lets us ALL down, and he makes me say ugh. You guys can hang on to these two as long as you want, I am not fooled by them and am also allowed to form my own opinion on them. If I want to not like them, I can, that's a wonderful thing. Problem is, some folks get mad and start attacking another user just because they have an opinion they don't agree with. IMO, the Wings will never win a Cup with James Howard starting. He has shown nothing to prove me wrong, he just isn't that good. Sure glad this thread turned into something other than Weiss, all because someone didn't like that I nick-named three people the in a bad way...

Johan Franzen = Washed up

James Howard = Average Goalie

Darren Helm = Barbie Doll

This team can get players that far outperform these guys...and probably spend less money on them, with the exception of the goalie position, but James Howard isn't even worth what he is getting paid.

Who might that be......and no, made up Vancouver trade scenarios don't count.

This confuses me since you also said this stuff today...

Holland is gong to have to overpay a UFA to lure him here.

No longer is there a lore of playing in Detroit. At least not as much as it used to be.

Whatever supports your point at the time....

Personally, I have no qualms about nicknames - just as long as they're noted who they're referring to (unless it's ridiculously obvious of course)

Second, I doubt Jimmy is going anywhere. That's a big contract, I don't see it moved. While I respect your opinion, I think that Jimmy has made some huge saves this year at the right times. Yes he's stunk it up pretty good too (i'm not blinded to the fact our goaltending has been poor this season) but recently he's been solid and most of the problem is down to our weak defence IMO. I'm not necessarily defending Howard, but I think it's fair to see he has made the big save when we needed it, just not consistently.

Back on topic, I don't see a way how we would be able to move Weiss. It's looking more likely he won't be back this season, and his subpar performance earlier in the year, combined with his absence from the last two seasons virtually, has given him little to no trade value. Oh and then there's the $$.

Where the hell is Weiss, why has he been out so long, when the hell is he coming back, and why the hell hasn't anybody given us any updates.

Got a second opinion from the doctor, same as the first doctor prognosis. Holland said they are going to have him push through pain in practice and see how it goes.

Can't he get some injections to relieve the pain and just play? It sounds like he has some scar tissue that is irritated when he goes full out. I guess he doesn't mind sitting back and collecting a cool 5 million dollars for his 4 points this season - thats more than a million per point. He has been told to try to practice through it so the doctors don't see it as a threat to his health it is just something that bothers weiss - i miss the times when a guy like fedorov gets a severe rib injury and just gets and injection during the game and plays through it.

No one will take him in trade. We can just buy him out. According to capgeek, if we do so the buyout is pretty cheap. For the next 8 years it would be: 2.1 million, .7 million, .7 million, 2.6 million, then 4 years at 1.7 million. With the cap going up, we have plenty of space to do so, if we wish.

As Richdg said we do have 1 more buyout we can use this summer. Maybe its Weiss? Also a lot of the reason Howard is struggling is the defense is terrible. I think if the wings can get a couple solid d guys in the offseason then we may see a better Howie next season.

And that 1 buy out, their 2nd compliance buy out, cannot be used on Weiss as he was signed after the new CBA went in effect. Tootoo will get the last compliance buy out imo. If the Wings move on Weiss, it will have to be a regular buy out i.e. some of his cap hit will remain after.

That buyout applies to contracts from before the lockout. Weiss was signed last summer.

Rich was talking about an ordinary course buyout, not compliance. You can use an ordinary course buyout on as many players as you want, but you still take some cap hit for it. Rich gave the numbers in his post.

I honestly feel they should just shut Weiss down for the year. Get him well rested for the start of next season, the surgery should be well healed by then and maybe just maybe he may have a chance to prove he was worth the $'s the Wings invested in him. We have enough at forward to hopefully get into the post season without Weiss so let it heal and take it from there.

TBH there is no need for Weiss on the team/roster at all baring major off season moves. if Legwand returns-which is most likely we have to many F's already, not including Weiss. Add a UFA or 2, the roster in once again overflowing.

I'm disappointed by the way things worked out with Weiss this year, but to act like he's being a ***** and sitting back collecting a paycheck is ridiculous. I don't care if you're being paid 5 million or paying ice fees out of your own pocket, you want to PLAY. Those types of hernias (that aren't really hernias) are excruciatingly painful, not to mention, they affect the ability to push off while you skate. Not really sure how this situation will be resolved, but he does seem like wasted space as of now. I think the Wings want him to play in order to be a tradable asset. While it would be great to be rid of the salary, I really don't want him in the lineup right now.

If I have my facts straight, Weiss did play through his initial injury. That's how he ended up where he is. Pushed it when he should've rested it, exacerbating the problem.

As for injections, I don't see that making much sense for Weiss right now. We don't really need him at present (knock on wood), so he should just take his time and do this the right way.

I believe he pretty much declared himself pain free for a couple days in a row for the first time either yesterday or the day before so injections shouldn't be on the table. It's more of him being able to get back into playing shape but what are the odds that will happen before the end of the regular season? Unless they're desperate for bodies come playoff time, I think the next time we see Weiss will be in the fall.
