Thinking through this, I'm amazed at how many of my faves have retired.

So many of my favorites have retired in recent years. It really hurt to see Sean O'Donnell retire. Always liked him. I always wanted Gary Roberts in a Wings jersey. Although he was a huge pain and a cheap shot artist at times, I was sad when Darcy Tucker retired. Sucks that Derian Hatcher didn't last too long after the '05 lockout. I can go on and on.

I'm not going to rattle off on guys I know of on other teams and call them favorites, but I do have a handful of non-Wings that I really like.

Patrick Sharp, David Backes, Cal Clutterbuck, Alex Ovechkin, Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Dustin Byfuglien, and Tomas Plekanec.

Anaheim: Selanne, Fowler

Despite all the former rivalries Selanne is a classy guy and a living legend. Wouldn't surprise me if the Ducks would indeed retire his number, after he is done playing. Fowler on the other hand is a very promising and reliable defenseman, trained by S. Niedermayer.

Boston: Thornton, McQuaid, Bergeron, Iginla, Chara - I like a lot of players on this team obviously

Thornton and McQuaid are as tough as they come and Thornton is also a very decent player, who brings size grit and leadership. He is really the type of guy who could be a great coach one day.

Bergeron: One of the best 200 ft in the game and the things he played through last year are unbelievable, a true warrior.

Iginla: Classy guy all the way

Chara: Mammoth of a man and an elite defenseman

Buffalo: Myers

The guy has a lot of potential but it gets totally wasted in Buffalo for now that's a real shame.

Calgary: by far McGrattan

Heavyweight champion, the guy loves his job and will stick up for his teammates no matter what. Someone like him would be welcomed with open arms on this team.

Carolina: E. Staal

Longtime captain and stayed with them despite all the failures.

Chicago: Toews, Hossa

Toews is just the type of leader I like, leads by example and always giving other players around him credit. He reminds me of a young Stevie Y.

Hossa: One of the best powerforwards in the game although he is getting up their in age.

Colorado: Landeskog, MacKinnon, Duchene

Duchene has shown time and time again, what a great person he is and also his on ice success is speaking for itself.

MacKinnon: this first year rookie just broke one of Gretzky's record and doesn't make a big deal about it, guys like Kadri, Yakupov could learn a lot from him.

Landeskog: big, physical and a great player being a captain at such a young age is really outstanding.

Columbus: Jack Johnson

Great defender and doesn't shy away from telling people to F off if they try to take advantage of him be it his trainers or the league itself.

Dallas: Seguin, Benn

Seguin: Always knew he would be a great player, Chiarelli just gave up on hm for stupid reasons. Also the media in Boston is horrible.

Benn: This guy could turn into another powerforward he has the size and skillset to become one of the premier forwards in this league.

Detroit: aside from the obvious Danny K - local boy and without him our defense would be horrendous

What can you say, never gets drafted, chooses to go another road and then decides to return to his favorite team and puts up a great rookie season. Way to go Danny

Edmonton: Gazdic, Hopkins, MacIntyre

Gazdic: The guy can play and is making a name for himself this season, could be one of the new and coming enforcers alongside Bourdelaux

Hopkins: He may be a bit overrated but he really doesn't have much help in Edmonton, comes off very humble and down to earth.

MacIntyre: Maybe the only guy in the league who could give McGrattan a run for his money. I love his interviews and videos of him telling rookies how to fight.

Florida: Gudbranson, Luongo

Gudbranson: tough, physical defenseman he plays the game the right way and doesn't shy away from standing up for his teammates.

Luongo: One of the best goaltenders in the game, threated unfairly by Gillis and yet never made a big deal out of it. Luongo could have made the situation much worse for the Canucks.

Los Angeles: Quick, Richards

Quick: His reflexes are really unreal and I love watching him play, he is really tough to beat when he is on.

Richards: Made the best of a tough situation and finally doesn't have to deal with the stupid media in Philly.

Minnesotta: Suter, Harding

Harding: Can't help but cheer for this guy, life hasn't been good to him and he continues to play so well and fight through big kudos to him.

Suter: Not the flashiest defenseman but boy he gets the job done every time and can play a ton of minutes without ever being out of gas, amazing stamina.

Montreal: Prust, Parros

It can't be coincidence that both tough guys are also by far the most likable guys on that roster. For a guy who isn't that big Prust has proven time and time again, that he will fight everybody and play through everything I mean he pressed his rips back in place and tried to finish a game, wow. The Stache is just the man.

Nashville: Rinne

Probably the biggest goalie in the league with lightning quick reflexes and I want him to do well, after all the injury stuff he has gone through.

New Jersey: Schneider

He re-signs with the Canucks just to get traded later and never moans about it, on top of that the guy takes away the #1 position from the best goaltender of alltime.

New York Islanders: Tavares, Grabner

Tavares is playing for an absolutely horrible run franchise and still puts up impressive numbers every year and even re-signs with them.

Grabner: This guy has unreal wheels watched some of his shorthanded goals against the Maple Leafs that was fun to watch.

New York Rangers: Lundqvist, Nash

Lundqvist: 300 wins 31 years old, 49 shutouts, Vezina candidate almost every year this is really really unbelievable.

Nash: Big powerforward he may look slow to others but sometimes I feel like him and Stepan and the whole Rangers offense.

Ottawa: Kassian, Ryan

Ryan: I don't know why but this guy just doesn't get appreciated. Left off team USA in an absolutely disgusting way, part of continous trade talks back in Anaheim and never ever misses a beat. Sadly he gets misused in Ottawa.

Kassian: How can you not like a guy with the nickname Kassassian

Philadelphia: Giroux, L. Schenn

Giroux: Got the best of Sid The Kid and is the reason for the Flyers turnaround this season.

L. Schenn: Big, tough and very reliable in his own end. He may not be the fastest skater and an offensive flash but but he gets the job done. I'd call him a Suter lite.

Pittsburgh: Engelland

Average size but absolute insane fighting technics this guy will drop the gloves against anybody and his fight against Orr was one of the most entertaining ones I've seen.

Phoenix: Ekman Larsson, Yandle

Larsson: Like Tavares with the Islanders I think he would get a lot more appreciation if he played for a bigger team.

Yandle: Same thing but he needs to work on his defensive game.

San Jose: Couture, Burns

Couture: Future captain of the Sharks for sure.

Burns: The guy goes from a defender to a forward and does incredible well I really don't know how one can have such a flawless transistion.

St. Louis: Backes, Pietrangelo

Backes: Despite Lucic he is the powerforward in the game right now, a tough mean SOB, beautiful wife and has his heart on the right place love his Athletes for Animals foundation.

Pietrangelo: The sky is the limit for this guy, he does it all puts up points is very good on the defensive side of the game and is still so young.

Tampa Bay: Stamkos, Hedman

Stamkos: Hands down the best goalscorer in the game, absolutely down to earth guy and an absolute gym freak. I think he will be a great captain for the Bolts for years to come.

Hedman: I still think he could need some more bulking up to do although he has great size but given his frame a few extra pounds could turn this guy into such a pain in the ass to play against.

Toronto: Kessel, Orr

Kessel: I just like the guy he is so humble, never makes a big deal of scoring goals and doesn't like to play the PR game. He is hiding from interviews and focuses on his job I love that.

Orr: Tough mean SOB who can also play boy I would love him in a Winged Jersey. As another interesting fact so far he has only played for Original 6 franchises.

Vancouver: Bieksa, H. Sedin

Bieksa: Lately a bit too offensive for my liking but he is a good defender and also very tough the only downside sometimes he comes off as a spotpicker.

H. Sedin: The magic between him and his brother is always so fun to watch. Sadly, Tortarella has done a good job getting rid of the all the creativity this team has.

Washington: Erskin

Doesn't get to play a lot but when he does he can provide energy and physicality, plus he will also drop the gloves against anybody.

Winnipeg: Scheifele, Wheeler

Scheifele: Just a hardworking rookie who never seems to give up on the play, really impressive.

Wheeler: Big and also a very hardworking although he could shoot a lot more.

I usually follow any former Red Wings. There are a lot of guys around the league that I respect, or whom I'd want on our team, but I wouldn't say I have any favorites. I don't even really have a favorite Red Wing...just a favorite team.

Stamkos: the guy just does it right, decently humble and plays hard. Not the best backchecker in the world but of the elite scorers I'd say he has an above average complete game (cough Ovi cough)

Karlsson: Love watching him play, smooth skating and his turning ability is incredible.

Most of the my picks are from the Kings because they're my second favorite team and the one I see most often after Detroit.

Wayne Simmonds. One of the scrawniest power forwards I've ever seen, but the guy hits, scores, isn't afraid to go to the hard areas of the ice, and will drop the gloves. Loved him in LA and would love for the Wings to sign him someday soon.

Kopitar. Imagine if Zetteberg were 6'3" and 225 lbs (which come to think of it is about how big Z plays). He doesn't have Hank's production but otherwise plays a similar style. And seems to have icewater running through his veins if you've ever seen him on a breakaway. All around class act too.

Stamkos. Scoring machine without any of the qualities I find irritating in Ovechkin.
