OK, first off, you CANNOT see anything gross in this clip. Just towels and a player and a trainer knowing something SERIOUS has happened. Makes ya ill just thinking about it.

Honestly, I'm not sure how he possibly could have lost his finger when he had both his gloves on during the slap shot. Would be interested to read an updated article on the incident.

Evidently just the tip of his finger was damaged (not the entire finger), and apparently all he needed was a few stitches to fix it up. Still though, strange to see an injury like this considering how heavy duty hockey gloves are.

Gloves are not that heavy-duty. It's not surprising at all that an 80-90mph slap shot can do that kind of damage to a finger if it gets pinched between the puck and stick. The foam (and maybe plastic) will give enough for that to happen.

Well yeah the entire glove isn't heavy duty, but the front of the glove certainly is. And the angle he was standing looked like the front of the glove was area exposed. It must have made impact on the side of the glove.

Like I said, gloves are not THAT heavy duty. They're nylon, foam, maybe plastic, and synthetic leather, with a finger in the middle, holding a graphite stick. That will not completely prevent the injury that occurred. In the updated article, it said he did NOT lose his finger, but the tip was split wide open. Most likely a pressure cut... which will happen when you shoot a chunk of vulcanized rubber with that much force and hit someone's gloved hand, even if it's dead on the padding.

Glad he didn't lose it but I think people are really underestimating the amount of damage a puck shot by pros/semipros can do. The thing is there are more protective gloves out there the downside is they aren't very comfortable to wear.

Depending on how severe the breakage is, those sharp bone fragments have to go somewhere.

Still sucks no doubt, but definitely nowhere close to as bad as actually losing a whole finger.
