I think actually, if we're looking at having the best defense we can next year without drastically overpaying, and with the way he's played after a rough start this year, we should resign Quincey. I didn't get to see the game tonight, but I've been thinking of it lately. There's not a lot of options on the market, and no matter how much we love the kids I don't think they're the answer yet. I'd trade Kindl at the draft to move up a bit, but, I really don't think Q has been as bad as LGW has made him sound. Plus he knows the system, doesn't seem to ever get hurt, and has made pretty decent strides lately. A pay cut is probably in order, but I wouldn't be opposed to having him back.

If Q came back around 2.5 I wouldn't kill myself. But I am worried about the length of the contract - we have a few kids in GR almost knocking on the door (1-2 years away) and I don't want to have another Nyquist situation by re-signing Q to a deal over 1 year in length (which he almost certainly won't accept). We don't have any aging Dmen coming into retirement and with Kronner, E, DD, Smith that makes 4 mainstays and if we move Kindl and sign Q like you suggests that leaves only one starting roster spot open for Marchenko, Sproul, Ouellet, Backman, Jensen to fight for. I see at LEAST 2 of those guys panning out. I would rather have 2 vets added on short 1 year deals or expiring deals and then promote as we are ready rather than sign Q for over 2 years. We could lose some of those kids if we can't sign them and they run out of eligibility and they could be lost for nothing like Quincey was so long ago.

Sproul, Ouellet and Marchenko to me are sure things. I'd like to see Ouellet and Marchenko up next year and Sproul lead the charge in GR for one more year with call-ups if needed. I'd rather not see Q re-signed at all and have better, younger players come up with squat cap hit so we can go after a top tier Dman or forward with the extra money.

I'd like to see this on the PP and 3rd line next year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvKdNw13Z8c

I don't think it will happen next year but I do look forward to the day he has a role on this team.

Between him and Sproul we've got a couple right handed cannons coming soon.

I'm sure Teemu was voted as the most skillfull player at the prospect's camp and that his hockey smarts where well above anyone else there. Lets not forget that he has played for 3 full season's in the Finnish Liiga and he leads the Griffs in points this year in his first full year in the AHL. He has played mens league hockey since he was 18, 4 years, its not like he has spent all those early years in jnr leagues raking the points up. 5'10" maybe on the short side, but he is solid at 200LB. If we compare him to our previous Finns, his Liiga record is better than Filppula and the same as Leino. At the AHL level he has a better output than Leino but is behind Filppula. I would say that Ville and Val are both more of playmakers, but Teemu has good playmaking skills but what sets him apart in my eyes is his scoring ability. We all got to breaking screaming at Flip to shot more, we want have that worry with Teemu.

I'm really keen on Pulkkinen.

And Jarnkrok is the one prospect I'd absolutely refuse to trade.

My thoughts exactly! Though, like SOAW said, it probably won't be next season. But that's not a bad thing.

Call me an optimist but I absolutely love our prospect pool and think we got a ton of potential there , best prospects potential in along time

For me personally from redwingscentral.com everyone in the top 10 except athanasiou is untouchable (although he's been on a tear he's doing this on his last ohl season,he could be the perfect prospect to throw into a deal to maybe land someone like Myers/kesler)

I'd also not touch janmark and pulkkinen .... I'd love to see almquist up now to help the 2nd ppl but I think he's gonna be gone cuz there's just no space

Maybe a athanasiou/almquist/Ferraro(who's a b.c boy) could be worked in a package for kesler although I'd love to see Myers instead

I'd resign Quincey tbh. Still young, big and believe or not, he's physical. With inflation of salaries he's probably worth his salary right now. I believe if we as a team scored more than around 20th in the league you would see his numbers look a lot better

Having said that we should give Buffalo what they want for Erhoff.

I'd let him walk ... With the cap going up he's gonna want 4-5 per yr + we got ouellet sproul marchenko backman coming up next 1-2 yrs .... Dekeyser Ericsson kronwall going nowhere , lashoffs here for cheap fora few more yrs .... If anything I'd try and make a big deal for Myers he's young and would be a perfect fit (although we'd probably need a 3rd team in the deal)

Smith Tatar athanasiou for Myers? I love Tatar but with sheahan jurco and jarnkrok pulkkinen mantha we can afford it?

At this point Buffalo might trade Myers for Kindl straight up just to get out of that contract. And that would still be a bad deal for Detroit. Kid's been playing like Quincey for a lot more money with a lot of years left. That deal is exactly why you don't give a player a huge contract before he can legally drink in the US.

You kidding me right? It would take a hell of a lot more to get Myers than kindl lol .... And trust me lot of teams would be calling up buffalo for Myers ...he just turned 24 this month defencemen develop later on and lets not forget how awful buffalo has been for yrs

Put him here with dekeyser on the 2nd pair with Babcock coaching ... We'd all be laughing

From the way I understand it Buffalo would love to move him but can't.

so Myers cap hit is $5.5m ? for another 5 years. So he's 24, put him in a position at Detroit where he isnt your top pairing guy he could be a steal be the end of that contract. he is a R/H as well. He's the highest paid D on the Sabres roster and also the youngest, maybe he's feeling he has to live up to his wagebill.

Here's and idea, Myers & Tallinder for Quincey, Kindl, McCollum and Almqvist.

We have some GREAT defence prospects coming in the next few years so why give up assets for an unproven financial burden?

Cap might only be $68 mil, not the projected $71 mil.

Just for **** n giggles, let's assume Alfredsson and Legwand both want to come back, they trade Kindl+ for a d-man, and they bring up Marchenko. Alfredsson's $6 mil salary reflects the carryover bonus from this year. Obviously the dollar amounts for the free agents are guesses.

CapGeek Armchair GM Roster
FORWARDS
Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($7.500m) / Daniel Alfredsson ($6.000m)

Tomas Tatar ($1.250m) / David Legwand ($4.000m) / Darren Helm ($2.125m)
Drew Miller ($1.350m) / Joakim Andersson ($0.733m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.800m)
Luke Glendening ($0.605m) / Mitchell Callahan ($0.605m)
DEFENSEMEN
Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($4.250m)
Alexander Edler ($5.000m) / Danny DeKeyser ($2.500m)
Brendan Smith ($1.263m) / Alexei Marchenko ($0.667m)
Brian Lashoff ($0.725m) /

Carlo Colaiacovo ($0.000m)
Jordin Tootoo ($0.000m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $68,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $66,301,212; BONUSES: $125,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,798,788

Either sign a backup goalie for around $1.5 mil ,which is normal salary range for them, or use Mrazek as #2. Still plenty of cap room.

I think we all agree the team needs a big time D-man. Especially a guy who can move the puck up the ice and put some points on the board.

Looking at SJ's contracts, I think they're going to have a real hard-time re-signing Boyle. He could be a good 1-year Alfredsson type stop gap player. Would take some pressure off Smith, Kindl, D, Lashoff, and the upcoming youngens for a year. Did I mention he's RH

My thoughts exactly. Though I'd probably prefer a two-year deal.

I think the teams needs both a guy who can run the PP and a shutdown guy, someone like Luke Schenn would be a dream come true.

Other than that for sure a center prospect and someone to keep the other team honest. So a lot of needs and especially defense is hard to get but at least the team will have some capspace to work it and Holland will have to get creative.

In reality, they need 2 d-men. They need an offensive guy for the top 4 so they can have 2 balanced pairs, and they need a big PK guy for the 3rd pair to pair with Smith or Kindl. There's still hope that Smith could be a top 4 guy, but I think Kindl is what he's going to be and I'd like to see him traded. I think there are some teams that would take a chance on him blossoming in a different system.
