They need to find the guy (dont recall his name, Gary Roberts maybe?) that got Stamkos up like 30lbs in an offseason. And send em to workout with him. Return next season in beast mode. 6-2 210lbs with speed and skill. Oooooh killem.

The Wings strength and conditioning coach does a fine job. He got both Dats and Z up to around 195 from their entry weights at 170-175 lbs, and if I recall correctly Kindl gained a huge amount of weight after his rookie season as well (not that it mattered).

Can't remember if it was Roberts or not, but it probably was. He's known for his conditioning program.

Hire him as a trainer or some sort of fitness adviser, why not. Or even put him on the coaching staff. Can't be any worse than what we've had this season.

I was thinking. About the Weiss situation.

The sense was that Weiss would've liked to have stayed in Florida, but Tallon basically told him, "No can do. Money's tight. We need to see where our youth is at. My hands are tied." Not that Tallon didn't want him back. Indeed, my whole point is that I think Tallon really did want Weiss back and that the loss is one of the things that pushed him to basically call out the owner. "You brought me in to build a Cup-winning team, but you're not giving me anything to work with, financially. And now our franchise player is gone. Maybe we'd be in the hunt for a playoff spot if we'd kept him. I'm not convinced our young forwards have the right leaders to learn from. Who better than Weiss? Who knows our system and what being a Panther is all about better than this guy?" Whatever Tallon told him, it seems to have worked, because now he has the green light to spend this summer. They want to be a cap team now. They want to win. They've brought back Luongo. Maybe they'd bring back Weiss? (And Bertuzzi?)

Mind you, I haven't given up on Weiss. I still think he can be that second-line center we need.

Looking at the upcoming UFA list is so depressing: Forwards (sorted via goals) & Defenseman (sorted via TOI)

Didn't know Iginla is having that good of a season really happy for him and it just proves, Bylsma really didn't use him the right way. Anyway, like I said I would try to target Moulson or maybe Cammalerie

As far as defenders the list is even more depressing Amac, Niskanen and maybe Tom Gilbert could help out but they are far from top pairing guys :(

I guess I should have been more clear, my (tongue in cheek) comment about moving in a different direction was in reference to a hypothetical excuse to break Dan Cleary's heart, not actually change how we play hockey. I don't expect missing the playoffs to change our organizational philosophy, but rather I hope it's used as an opportunity to reduce redundancy and hash out roles. Figure out which three of Helm, Andersson, Sheahan, Glendening, and Emmerton you want to keep and let the others go. Figure out whether you want Zetterberg to permanently move to the wing or not. Figure out whether you want Weiss or Legwand or both (one on the wing? Ugh). Identify whether Abby's going to be a top six forward or a grinder. Jurco up or down? Tatar into the top six or sign a UFA? Kindl's future? Gustavsson's future? These sorts of things. Then make stop-gap moves accordingly.

Letting Cleary, Bert, Sammy, Quincey, Etc. walk is a no-brainer, but we've still got a lot to sort out regardless.

I'd say I should have been more clear. Maybe I should have said "personnel decisions" rather than organizational philosophy.

I don't think missing or making the playoffs will affect any of those decisions. Some aren't decisions that need to be made, some will be made by simple necessity, some are just unimportant.

We're a team in transition, and it's absurd to think our management doesn't realize that. I think we're an organization that wants to remain competetive, but also committed to building through the draft. And I think we'll continue to try to balance both, until we either transition back into a contender or into a team that's much less feasible to keep competetive.

There is no sure-fire formula for building a cup team. If there was, sure...do that. But there isn't. Our philosophy, which seems to be, "try to scrape by as best we can while hoarding youth and hoping for the best", may not sound very good. But really it's no less likely to work than anything else we might try, and if it does work it likely means another long period of being a contender.

A stopgap will help next year but I'm so sick of stop gaps. It seems like that's all Hollands been doing for years now. Holland needs to stop with the facelifts and get a new face.

Pav and Z aren't getting any younger and the window to win another cup is closing fast. Pav hasnt had a pure scorer to play with since Hull, and the D has struggled to put up points ever since Rafalski retired. This team has been begging for an overhaul for years, and maybe after this disastrous season things will change...

But probably not since Holland will blame the year on injuries and sign some more "veterans."

That's not really true. Prior to this year, the only "stop-gap" type players we've had have been in minor roles. Alfie is really the first to play a somewhat key role, and even he was only our 4th forward (maybe even 5th).

White and Quincey I think were more due to a lack of options rather than an unwillingness to make a bigger commitment.

And just out of curiosity, what would your idea of "an overhaul" be?

We haven't replaced any if our defencemen that left, Rafalski, Stuart, or Lidstrom, neither player was replaced.

As far as what I'd like to see done: starting with not resigning any of our UFA's, getting a new 4th, 5th, and 6th defenceman. And singing at least 2 new forwards, but I'm not naive I know most of it won't happen.

They wanted younger guys to step up. They haven't. People complain about the Wings not giving kids a shot, then complain when they do.

Ericsson has been a pretty effective new Stuart. Raffi and Lids are really the gaping holes. Smith and Kindl have done nothing to replace them so far

The wings don't need a center. They don't need a winger. They don't need a defenseman or goalie. All they need is a new trainer and a new offseason workout plan. This team is competitive with half the team injured. Imagine if everyone was healthy.

Ok but they need a Dman

Niskanen or Stralman. Re-sign Alfie or Legwand - or both if we trade another forward.

Wait a minute.

Why would we want Stralman?

5-11, 190lbs?

8 pts in 69 games?

If Almquist spends the summer in LA eating In’n’Out and training with Chelios or something, how would Stralman be a better option.

He's Swedish and another potential whipping boy for us, uh what don't you get?
