I just want that top-four guy, who we should've added the moment Lids said goodbye but has instead been put off because something something you can't replace Nick Lidstrom something something there's no hockey store something something a trade requires two teams something something we're not going to move top propspects something something Colaiacovo Quincey something something DeKeyser is lost forever with a broken finger something something Ericsson is lost forever with a broken finger something something... Agreed. Niskanen would be good, or a guy like Mark Stuart if the Jets don't re-sign him. Bogo won't be going anywhere or he'd be a good fit too. If we have to go with prospects, I'd rather have that than re-signing Q. In a perfect world, we'd get a #2-3 guy via UFA. Hopefully there's some interesting surprises July 1st. I thought Smith played really well in the second half of the season and the playoffs. Fischer has now gone on record saying we have, like, 107 NHL-level D prospects. That they're all amazing, and, seriously, he just can't begin to tell you how amazing they all are. Holland has gone on record saying the usual stuff he says about everything. Even if we move Kindl and Lashoff and let Quincey walk, that's still only two spots up for grabs. You don't think we're gonna use this year to get a sense of what we really have on the farm? You think we're gonna outbid 25 other teams for Niskanen's services and leave all of one spot open for the kids to fight over? Does that really sound like something that's gonna happen? Not that I like what I'm saying. But I'm trying to be realistic. This also applies to the big scoring winger thing. Who, besides maybe Dustin Penner (because he should come dirt cheap), do we actually have a realistic shot at? None of the better free agents, because we don't do bidding wars. A trade? Well, it'd have to be a big trade, otherwise we'd just go with what we have. But if it's a big trade, that means we're moving a young gun and a top prospect and a pick and probably more. Really? Ken Holland's going to do that? If we can at least sign Benoit Pouliot, I'll be really happy. Such are my expectations. I think we're all aware of Holland's prevaricates... Which is why all this talk is just a fun way to spend the off-season, I don't think anyone on this forum really believes that Holland will upgrade the team in any meaningful way. It seems like our players with size don't use it, while some of our smaller players like Helm and Glendening use their size to the fullest. Problem is only Datstuk can floor an opponent with a 195 lb frame. He's like a pitbull that way. Guess we need a sniper for the top line and a 2nd line beast. Kronwall-E, Boyle-Dek, Morris-Kids. I'd rather stay away from old-ass players, just as we're getting rid of Bertuzzi, Cleary, and Samuelsson. Plus, Boyle wants to stay in San Jose. Doesn't mean he will, but he may take a cut to stay there. Morris will be 36 in August. From what I know of him, he's pretty solid defensively, but there has to be someone who we can keep around for a few years. Boyle and Morris won't be around much longer. The only way he's going to get top line wingers or top pair D is to trade some of the prospects people don't want traded. And while there might be an odd comment on LGW, I think most of the fans that come here aren't stupid enough to think that you can get a star for free. Quite a few. There's honestly probably 5(if that) that should be considered top propescts. 5 of which most people don't want traded and since nyquist is with Detroit you can cross him off that list. Non pipe dream possibilities include Devante Smith-Pelly and Alec Martinez. Also, because I know you're into this kind of thing, Jonas Hiller will be a free agent on the wrong side of 30 looking for a fresh start because of some meddling kids.
