So Kindl for Green straight up anyone?

Put in a pick and I think it's a deal we should give a try. At worst he is a bust and we don't resign him next year. But even then we got rid of Kindl. Problem is we might run into capspace problems if we want to resign Alfie.

I'd rather stand pat and miss the playoffs by a longshot (hello top 5 pick), than trade for Mike Green. The guy has had injury problems and doesn't know how to spell defense, his PP QB qualities are "pass to OV and wait for something to happen" he doesn't have a great nor accurate shot. The Wings don't have a player like OV so whom should he pass to ?

Knowing our genius GM he would give up Nyquist, a first and whatever for one year of green so it is not worth it. The only risk I would like at this point in time would be Tyler Myers but other than that there isn't one UFA of interest...

I'd rather all the kids play now....but of course WE HAD TO get Quincey because his mistakes arw better than a rookies....

Kronwall Smith Kindl and most of the prospects ate puck movers. Pulk has little trade value because of his size speed and how he'd be viewed league wide. Tatar put up more points Datsyuk was still better his rookie year. Offer sheets are a waste of time.

As kip said: Who in their right mind is paying future top six forwards for broken down offensive defensemen? I'd take Green at a very low price-point because at this point WASH has got to be looking at that $6million cap-hit and thinking. "Hmmm. How do I free up some cash to bolster my forward corps? Oh, I'll get rid of Mike Green for a pick and I can do whatever I'd like!!"

Nobody's offer sheeting Subban.

We're certainly not. Even if we did MTL would immediately match whatever offer we made to Subban.

They've got more cap space than we do to sign the guy.

If you want to offer sheet any team at this point it should be Boston. They're going to have a hard time getting all their RFAs re-signed. Especially if someone was to jam up the works with an offer-sheet.

Franson wouldn't be bad, but we'd somehow have to rid ourselves of Kindl and/or Quincey for that to happen. I'm doubting Toronto wants either of them seeing how they each have a higher cap hit than Cody.

Tatar just had a better rookie season than Datsyuk did, on a much worse team. I'm not sure what else he's got to prove for you to think he's a future top six player.

As far as your asking price for Green. I don't think Washington would even ask that with a straight face. Holland's the king of making moves from a position of weakness, but even then, he's insane. He gave a prospect and a pic for a top six center in Legwand and that was universally considered an overpayment. Asking for a future top six forward in return for a guy on an expiring contract, who isn't a first pair defender, isn't happening. I can't think of even a single example.

You guys don't actually think Tatar is Datsyuk level just because he had a "better" rookie season, do you? Let's be realistic (and I'm one of the biggest Tatar boosters here). His aggression doesn't always overcome his small stature, he's easily kept out of the prime scoring areas, and once the league figured him out his offense disappeared. He's not great defensively and has a bit of an attitude that all spells "Babcock's Doghouse." If he's just going to be misused and abused like Hudler was, we might as well trade him to get some value. I'm not a big fan of Green's so I'm not specifically pushing for that trade. But Tatar is the most likely to move, I think, and has the most value to another team without hurting us too badly. Nyquist is fast, dynamic and creative. Jurco will hopefully be a big bodied power forward type, which are rare. Pulkinnen is a one-trick pony at this point and I doubt he has much value. We can't really part with any of our d-prospects unless we had to.

That's how I got the point of suggesting Tatar in a trade. Unless he somehow changes his game, he's going to be a tweener like Filppula and Hudler were. He might get top 6 playing time but I'm not sure how dynamic he'll be there now that the league has him figured out. If any of Tatar, Nyquist, or Jurco don't become a top six player, it's likeliest to be Tatar, I think.

I don't know much about Petry. Is he worth a trade?

He is slightly better than Smith and shoots right. Not worth one of our better players.

While I agree with some parts of this - namely that Tatar is nowhere near Datsyuk's level, and won't be in the future, I have to disagree with the bold portion. If anything, I think Tatar is one of the best on this team in tight, and getting himself in between the hash marks to shoot. I think he'll continue to get there - he's shifty and he doesn't shy away from getting to the front of the net.

Most of his goals on the year are in the slot, or around the net:

He's not a Datsyuk, but he's got the hands of a sniper and is willing to get to the front of the net, consistently. That being said, if a forward out of Mantha, Nyquist, Jurco and/or Tatar are going to be used as trade bait, he would definitely be my pick.

Mike Green can put up points, he can run a power play (give him Alfredsson or Pulkkinen), he's a right-handed shot, his trade value is low, he's on the right side of 30, and he's in a contract year. At the right price, he's worth a shot. I get that every time someone mentions Mike Green someone has to say OMG HE CAN'T PLAY DEFENSE, but our blue line's biggest need isn't actually "better defending," it's moving the puck out of our zone, driving play the other way, generating offense, putting up points, running an effective power play. We have some pretty steady guys in Ericsson, DeKeyser, Marchenko, and Ouellet, and we're generally better than the Caps on the D side of the puck. We have to move some bodies out anyway.

Realistically, though, we're gonna use the 6D spot as a revolving door for the kids, and I'm more than ok with that. My only beef, in re: Quinceygate, is that one of those other spots is going to be occupied by Quincey, who will be playing huge minutes because he's getting paid relatively big money. I would've much preferred having two rookies on the back end.

I'm not a fan of Green but you make a convincing argument. Injuries would be my main concern with him, especially after last season.

As much grief as Rafalski got for his defense the last couple years his puck movement, especially his stretch pass, was 2nd only to Lidstrom for keeping things moving forward. A couple long bomb passes from Rafalski would keep the forecheckers honest.

Even with Green's defensive shortcomings, maybe a real puckmover can help keep the Wings from getting pinned in their own end so often.

Realistically, though, we're gonna use the 7D spot as a revolving door for the kids, and I'm more than ok with that. As disappointed as I am with that re-signing, I'd be more okay with it if Kindl is gone.

I like our team....lol, I know how that sounds. I said in another thread,I love our kids and all of the top25 prospects listed on the other red wings site. I love the last few years of drafting. I just wanted to have a couple of higher end UFA's to throw in the mix. I am tired of Franzen, but I can live with his 20-25 goals a year. I cant stand Kindl or Quincey and think that they wouldn't be missed if replaced by kids or if somehow #firekenholland would convince hometown boy Tim Gleason to come here along with Derek Morris...

I can't stand #firekenholland anymore. I hate #KFQ and will really be upset if he re-signs cleary. I think there are far better d-men still out there that would have taken 2 yrs. $4.25M to come here. He didn't have to re-sign #KFQ.

I am good with giving Mantha a spot to lose this fall. And I want to see Kindl dealt and another 1 or 2 D-Men signed... I think Diesel is gonna get about $3.5M now that #KFQ is at $4.25M...actually Diesel is much better and deserves more, but that would be a great raise for him either way...

Harold! Good point...I hate the #kfq signing, but if Kindl gets dealt, we are at least going to get someone new that HAS to be better than Kindl. Maybe #firekenholland signs Gleason or Morris and lets everyone duke it out at training camp for the spots, then tries (and fails) to trade the losers and ends up just waiving them...

If we get stuck with #kfq and dump Kindl, I will feel a little less hatred, but all in all, I am hugely disappointed in our off season thus far...not including the draft that is. I am still majorly mad at #firekenholland for turning Detroit into a place nobody puts on their list anymore for a destination. His years of "no one makes more than Lidstrom" and "you should be expected to sign here for less because we are Detroit..." and turned the new generation of player away from Detroit. You got to pay and you got to show you have to balls to make the moves to win. Maybe 5 years from now, our new "core" will be all-stars just like the 90's "core" and we will once again, be a sought after organization to play for.

The good news is that Babcock doesn't care how much you get paid. If Quincey sucks, he's getting bottom pairing minutes. Or benched. As long as we have another option.

If Petry is a slightly better Smith, and is right handed, then he's better than Kindl. And that improves our team.

And Dabura's point about not needing a terrific defender is a point I and others have been making for a while. We're good enough defensively with the removal of Kindl and Quincey (which sadly didn't happen) but our entire game suffers as a team from not being able to get the puck out. A guy who can do that would be great, especially if paired with a solid defender like Ericsson or DeKeyser. Balance is key.
