Little overpaid but not too much for what he brings, physical shot blocking defenseman who can chip in some points here and there. Would have loved him in a Winged Wheel.

Good signing for the Flyers

Since when is blocking shots and playing physical worth $5million a year? He isn't great defensively or offensively. He would be a good 2nd pairing guy at 3-3.5/per imo

Okay, arguing with a ton of my flyers fans who all say Amac > Ericsson.... That includes contract and everything. Also had a couple say he is a solid number 2 in the NHL right now??? Lol please tell me I'm not crazy or that big of a homer...?

I think Ericsson is better defensively. Either way both are not number 2 nhl defense in the nhl. Flyers fans don't understand what a good defense looks like though so I get it lol.

I agree big rig isn't a number 2 but he is a beast 3 shutdown. I have wanted us to get a number 2

D man that could really play with kronwall, kinda like Stuart was.

If MacDonald is worth 5 million dollars as a stay at home defensive d-man then Ericsson is worth fifty millionty zillionty dollars for being the same thing only bigger, strong, and faster.

Macdonald is a good player, don't get me wrong. But he's basically the Ryan Callahan of defensemen. A little engine that could.

This is why I always laugh when, every time the Wings re-sign any of their RFA types, letsgowings blows up with "we overpaid!" It happened with Ericsson and Kronwall, and it has happened with others. Invariably those "overpaid" contracts start looking pretty darned good later when other teams pay more for lesser players. Not saying Holland has never made a mistake, obviously, but for most of the in-house guys who would be considered core players, he has locked them up for less than the market soon became.

The thing with him is, I've seen evaluations saying he's a solid #2, and others that said he's a good 3rd pair guy on a contender, and a lot of his stats are because someone had to play those minutes for the Isles. Obviously Philly feels the former is true, but this is Philly so who knows if he really is a #2. But at least they have Timonen coming off the books, so they'll only have 5 active defensemen making over $3.5 mil. Until they give someone else a big contract that is.

In reality, it's probably exactly what he would've gotten on the open market on July 1st.

Looks like Holmgren is trying to plan ahead for the likely retirement of Timonen, instead of waiting for July 1st to come around.

This summers UFA class is super thin on proven big-minute dmen that are not yet on the backslide of their careers. MacDonald and Niskanen were probably going to be the most sought after.

Niskanens agent is probably doing cart wheels right now...

Prime example of why we're going to see another lockout once this CBA expires. It's contracts like this, due to stupid GMs and owners and agents, that drive salaries up across the board. It's really F****** infuriating and defeats the entire purpose of having a salary cap. And it's so flawed. Seriously why the hell would you link the cap to revenue if you're the owners, knowing that the game is increasing it's revenues. It's just like shooting yourself in the foot because those rollbacks on salaries they keep wanting eventually get surpassed by the cap. Argh. Rant over.

back to Macdonald. I don't think 1 or 2 good years should earn him $5m, but yes, now Holmgren has gone and set the table for the rest of D men who will hit the market in two months time. What a jackass.

Wheter people like or not Amac would have gotten the same if not more on the open market Holmer knew it. You aren't going to get a young top pairing defenseman under 7 mill anymore thanks to the stupid CBA so why shouldn't second pairing guys cash in for giving their bodies to the team?

At some point people have to understand the time for giving hometown discounts is gone and the owners brought it to themselves by employing a midget and locking out the players 3 times in a row.

So instead of bitching about the deal why not grats Amac? He finally gets to play for an organization which will spend to the cap instead of lowballing their players.

Also there is no purpose in having a hard cap, if leagues want a cap it should be MLB like.

We're annoyed because it is guys like Paul Holmgren who have created this "reality". Throwing money at guys who don't deserve it.

I don't care who you play for, a d-man worth $5M per doesn't finish -22 and 28 points. Every defenseman should be judge on a Nick Lidstrom scale. How much did the best d-man of the generation make in his last year? $6M?

Comparing to Lidstrom with a lower cap might not be fair - but I agree with you completely - compare to top dmen in todays nhl:

AMac at 5 mill - what does PK Subban get?

Karlsson's contract is like 6.5 mill or something too...

Doughty only makes 2mill more than the new AMac contract.

Glendening is sitting at 600k for 3 years and although he is a completely different player - he isn't 1/8th as valuable as AMac is despite playing different positions.

Its funny that the top star players will be stuck around 9 mill with many sitting around 7-8 mill and then these middle of the pack players are getting the true overpayment. The NHL should increase cap hits each year proportional to the increased cap growth each year so that stupid contracts like these stick out for the full length of the contract rather than looking okay in 3-4 years.

He is so so similar to Quincey with his falling and questionable balance, also can not receive a pass very well and throws some grenades but his pk is good and he can eat minutes I'd much much much prefer Ericsson though

Good point - if he is pulling in 5mill per - what will Quincey get on the open market lol?
