i just thought that if our roster was fully fit and all the guys were in their prime days it wouldn't be too bad,

in fact it could probably go all the way. this is what Kenny was probably thinking.............

Zetterberg Datsyuk Alfredsson

Samuelsson Legwand Bertuzzi

Franzen Weiss Cleary

Abdelkader Helm Tootoo

Kronwall Ericsson

DeKeyser Smith

Quincey Kindl

Howard Gustavsson

Wha? Are you saying Kenny was probably thinking Sammy, Bert, and Cleary were still in their prime days?

Because I guarantee he wasn’t thinking that.

And right now, on paper, that roster sucks ***.

T

The series has also highlighted a number of things we all knew.

This team is too small.

This is a roster in transition, trying not to waste the final years of D & Z, but has too many rookies and vets and not enough at their peak.

Howard is a good no 1 goalie, but will never be a great one. The monster is a decent back-up but plays a scary style.

If tootoo's offence hadn't vanished, he'd be a valuable playoff man in the east.

Legwand hasn't really worked, but has shown more then Weiss did.

We still desperately need a no 1 D. Too many we have have strengths matched by weakeness. Ericsson has no offence and goes on bad runs of form. Smith, though improved, still takes far too many risks. Lashoff is a career no 7 at best, as he doesn't move the puck well enough. Kindl has all the tools to be a good 2nd pairing man, but lacks the aggression and courage under pressure. DD is a solid 2nd pairing guy, who occasionally makes rookie mistakes, and hasn't much offensive upside. Quincey is better than most think he is, but is a 3rd pairing 2 way d-man trying to learn how to be an anchor....

Up front we have more balance with helm back, but desperately need guys who can finish. Franzen, for all the criticism, is getting chances, making decent rushes and being defensively responsible, but is on one of his increasingly regular dry spells where he can't finish. As someone said, he's a 3 rd line forward who will occasionally be unstoppable for a month. He also plays a LOT better with Zetts than any one else at Centre, so if he's being second line, it needs to be with z and nyquist for speed. Otherwise 3rd line for the mule except when he heats up. He's still just about worth his salary, but remains frustrating as hell.

Other than that Alfie has a great shot, but most of them are pass first guys who can finish. But we've been crying out for a goal scorer for YEARS.

The positive is, some of the solutions to some of these problems are in the system.

Mrazek could be Hasek lite, but either way will push jimmy more than gus, being someway between the two.

Sproul will hel our PP no end, and has great size. While we wait for him to tune his defence,Almquist could be a PP stop gap. A slower Rafalski...

Marchenko and Oulette have shown they can contribute safely enough, so it's safe that at Least one will surpass kindl and Lasshoff.

AA - Greek lightning - Brings blazing speed and decent size. And a lot of skill.

Mantha has the potential to be 1 year away from the guy Pav has been waiting for since Hossa. Best prospect we've had since zetterburg.

Callahan can bring some more sandpaper with a hint of goal sniffing

Jurco uses his size well despite being a skill guy.

Others show possibilities but are harder to pick confidently.

Still not enough size......

Not sure how we fix that, as trades and FAs are not holland's strong point it seems

I don't think people need to panic because it's not as bad as many say nor is it as competitive as many others like to think (with their hearts). Jimmeh is ours like it or not. With his money he's going to be in Detroit quite a spell. He can become Chris Osgood or he can become Tim Cheveldae, the jury is still out. It's up to him. Before they won the back to back cups in 97-98 they didn't make massive changes to put them over the top. A Sandstrom here, a Rouse there, Homer for Dino, and not a big deal at the time when they got an aging Russian center from Vancouver (That's dumb people said, they're already so old). I agree some size and sandpaper is needed. Babcock admitted it by putting in Bert last night. If they can find a couple bangers/cornermen with even a little pop that would allow Babcock a proper energy and checking line. If Zetterberg and Datsyuk can play together on a line consistently they should have 2-3 really good years left. Find the supporting cast. I'd take any and all offers on one barnyard animal. If you can add the aforementioned bigger versions of Glendening and Helm send him away at a discount. We as a fanbase can't keep waiting for this jackass to stud again.

Another defenseman, at least as good as Ericsson is now is necessary. No more 6th or 7th guys Kenny, a top 4. Now. Think Larry Murphy not Jason Woolley (As always Sparty On!). Also, our defensemen are too nice. I'll bet Jimmy Howard would like a crease clearer like a Jamie Macoun, certified d***head. Another not that expensive change for the better at the time.

3-4 middling changes I think could make a big difference and for now keep guys like Andersson and Jurco hungry and not having to play big minutes every night. I did have a nightmare where I woke up in the future in October of 2014 and Kyle Quincey was still playing for Detroit. My wife said I was talking in my sleep saying "No Kyle Quincey, hard off the boards, not up the middle again..." In my nightmare I wake up just as Quincey gives it to Phil Kessel and he shoots and scores. Again Kenny, help me sleep, a TOP FOUR guy.

This team needs to focus on getting the young guys up to see if they can play at the NHL level. No more contracts to Cleary or Sammy or Bert. Also - find some physical wingers who can mix it up with other teams forwards and not get pushed around all game.

And the defense is a disaster after Kronwall. Maybe Smith emerges to DeKeyser's level but Ericcson is prone to stupid plays and penalties, Kindl/Quincey are basically pylons that move.

I won't even get into the Howard contract and how that hamstrings this team when Mrazek might be the future even now.

We still desperately need a no 1 D.

We have a #1 D, he's called Niklas Kronwall.

Unless by #1 D, you actually mean franchise D-man. In which case your options are limited to: Chara, Weber, Suter, Doughty, Karlsson, Subban, OEL, Keith, Pieterangelo. Now tell me how you plan to get them.............

Has Lashoff ever made a pass that went tape to tape? I would add Janmark, Nestrasil and Pulks to that list of guys who are going to contribute. I've watched a number fo Griffins games online the past month or so and I'm impressed by the strides Nestrasil has made over the past couple of years from when I first saw him playing for Toledo.

What's exciting is that this team is only a couple moves away from being a serious contender. Dats and Z are still elite players, the kids all performed way better than expected. We need to round out our top 4 on defense (and honestly I think the series against Boston turns out much differently if we had Ericsson in the lineup), and pick up a top six forward who's an offensive threat (Weiss?), and suddenly the team is looking quite formidable.

ZacK Kassian and Marcus Foligno would be good addition's are they FA's or RFA's this summer?

Kassian is an RFA, but Vancouver is going to be shaking things up so it would be intriguing. Weiss and Kindl for Kassian would be nice. Then sign Stastny to fill the void at center.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Franzen

Nyquist-Stastny-Kassian

Tatar-Sheahan-Helm

Abby-Glendening-Jurco

Callahan-Miller

Kronwall-E

Dekeyser-Meszaros

Smith-Oullette

Lashoff
