ECSF : (4) Montreal Canadiens vs. (1) Boston Bruins

Milbury (of all people) was talking up the Habs during the first intermission, but they looked kind of flat most of the night. Definitely a step back in terms of getting bodies in front of Rask, and the score showed it.

If this thing goes 7, they should just save everyone some time and start in OT.

From NHL:

Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton has been fined $2820.52, the maximum permitted under the CBA, for unsportsmanlike conduct during Game 5 of the teams' Second Round Stanley Cup Playoffs series in Boston on Saturday, May 10, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

He's Boston's version of Murray.

That's an insult to Thornton.

Douglas Murray is a cruel joke, and enough is enough [Eyes on the Prize]

While Murray is on the ice, the Canadiens are giving up 50.4 shots against per 60 minutes, and putting up just 15.1 shots for per 60 minutes. That is an insurmountable difference.

Of the 327 skaters who have played 2 or more games in the playoffs, Murray ranks 327th in Corsi %, Corsi % relative to his team, Fenwick %, Fenwick % relative to his team, shots for %, and shots for % relative to his team.

In fact, relative to his team, he's nearly 10 percentage points worse than the next worst player. With the rate at which Murray is being outshot, with average puck luck he will be outscored by three goals every five games.

This means, in the simplest of terms, that if you support Douglas Murray, you think that what he brings to the Montreal Canadiens is worth more than giving up a 4.2 goal advantage in a seven game series. You are literally gifting your opponent more than four goals than they would score over an average player.

It is, but not by all that much.

Murray's corsi share in the game, was 16.7 percent, and it's nearly impossible to be that bad. But perhaps to keep things fair, Claude Julien likewise insisted on giving regular shifts to Shawn Thornton, who is similarly untalented (a 25 percent corsi share on the night in eight minutes at even strength). While no one in the entire NHL is likely to be as abject in this regard as Murray, Thornton at least gives him a run for his money
