Ken Holland quote August 31st 2014:

Ultimately, we kicked some tires but the price was too steep to bring in a free agent RH defenceman. We feel the return of a more experienced Quincey and Kindl solidifies our backend. The return of a healthy pav and Z gives us all we need and franzen tells me he has been resurged.

I traded tatar and 2 conditional 1st round picks for the rights to Chris Chelios, but ultimately I did not kick the tires hard enough and we won't be adding his veteran leadership this season.

I cried after reading this. Why? Because it's the most truthful thing I've ever read.

Can we please shelve the "kick the tires," "we like our team," "(player x getting healthy) is our deadline acquisition," and "our PP is our enforcer" jokes alongside "(player y) is lazy and sucks," and "what's to stop Chris Chelios from..." as tired? I'm begging you, please. This board needs new material.

PS: The beard quote is pretty great.

If I may ask. Why stop those quotes? I mean yes they are overused. But they're FACTS. Proven facts. Look at ken Hollands track record...it's exactly who he is and what he is doing. Now can he change? Yes. Will he? I'm not sure only time will tell.

There's a new clown joke going around that I really hope catches on because it is HILARZ!

For some players, today marked their last time in a Wings uniform — there are seven unrestricted free agents, and of those, Daniel Alfredsson is one of the only ones the team is interested in bringing back, provided he wants to play another season.

"It's going to be at least a few weeks before I decide about that," Alfredsson said. He plans to stay in the area through mid-June, as his sons finish up school. "I need to get away from it all and then decide if I want to go through everything to prepare for another season."

Todd Bertuzzi will look for employment elsewhere, as will David Legwand and Mikael Samuelsson. Daniel Cleary, who received a verbal promise of future employment when he agreed to a one-year deal last fall, will be offered something in a capacity outside of playing in Detroit, as the Wings don't see him as a viable player anymore.

Jonas Gustavsson has been so injury-prone, he's hardly worth bringing back. Kyle Quincey, like most defensemen, stands to cash in on the market.

Babcock said the Wings "feel we can improve our back end from within." He specifically wants the defense to gain a right-handed shot, which could create a fit for either Sproul or Andrei Marchenko.

It should be stated that this article is incredibly misleading.

This is an opinion piece.

People really need to stop taking what they hear in interviews literally.

"Overripe" means "we don't want to let a vet we trust walk away to call up a kid, then have to send the kid down because he's not ready, hurting his confidence and leaving us with a hole in the roster."

"We like our team" means "yeah, we have holes, but I'm not going to call anyone out publicly, and it's not like we're the f--king Isles or Panthers."

"Kicked the tires" means "I made a bunch of calls but they wanted our first round pick and our best players and I didn't want to trade any of them. Deal with it."

"Getting him back is our deadline acquisition" means the same as "kicked the tires" only they're also getting a good player back from injury, and it will help.

"We like our team"

If this is in any way acceptable from this team's GM after the last 3 (really 4) years I don't know what to tell you. Holland clearly needs to go, the team needs to be rebuilt and the franchise needs to transition.

We are transitioning/rebuilding right now.

Transition from small euros to small euros lol

Which we've won with several times before.

U

O

When you have guys like prime Lids, Pasha and Z that's a different story but I'm not expecting any of them to become such a great player. If Tatar and Nyquist turn out as solid 20 - 25 goalscorers annually I'd be very happy.

Anyway it's true the Wings are drafting too many small euros and not enough Michigan boys.

who are those small Euros we drafted recently? Mantha, Anastasou, Nastasuyk? I can only think of Matthias Janmark but he is not that small after all (6-0, 190).

For whatever reason Tapatalk didn*'t post the whole thing, anyway:

Lately is has become much better sure, Mantha looks like he has the size and skill to become a possible top 6 guy. With all the experts, scouts expecting this to be a very meh draft there might hope for another big bodied surprise.

Yeah....no.

Signing guys like Alfie/Sammy/Cleary/Bert going into last season was a clear sign that they weren't in rebuilding mode yet. Trading for Legwand isn't how you rebuild either. Part of rebuilding is using your draft picks, not trading for 2 month rentals.

Holland needs to go.

Im in agreement with you that Hollands track record recently is poor. Firing him seems a bit much though.

Transitioning from one core to another doesn't mean the style of play needs to change.

Why would the team change from a puck possession style anyways? its proven to be the most successful style of play by far.

You also don't rebuild over the course of 1 year, its going to take a few for the next wave to surpass the old wave of players, the fact that we're doing it for a 3rd time under Holland without missing the playoffs at all is why Holland will likely retire as the greatest GM in NHL history.

Very well said.

I tried saying this in another thread, but it was nowhere near as concise as this.

It's amazing how little credit he gets.

It was always a Scout, or his assistants, or coaching staffs decisions that he goes along with.

Then when he has to replace them that off-season andtthe results are the same, it all repeats.

It's insane.
