Should we pursue Iggy?

Iggy is a UFA and I am sure Boston will try hard to resign him but I think we should take a run at signing him for a few years. He is older but coming off his 12th 30+ goal season, provides veteran leadership for younger players and will add an element of toughness we desperately need? I've been wanting Iginla in a Red Wing for ever and now is a good a chance as any. He'd bring alot of what we need including being a Right Handed shot

Nope, guy's a loser. I don't want any more washed up losers on our team. Right now every guy we've got on the roster is a winner...Stanley Cup winners....Calder Cup winners.

One of the things I was thinking while watching the B's vs the habs was, Boston looked tired. That very much included iggy. Just didn't seem to have much speed/quickness in that series. At his age that could be the norm. if we were 1 piece from being a cup contender then sign him. We are not, so we are better off spending assets elsewhere.

I agree, though - the Bruins are older than people seem to think, and they're definitely not built for speed as it is. Also, getting past at least the first round every season does take a toll on you, especially if you make a really deep run or two.

I'd like to see us be more like the Stars than the Bruins. Fast, aggressive, fast, fast, skilled, tenacious, fast.

A D-Bag? I've never heard anyone ever say that about Iggy. If he is too slow for our team then that is one thing but the guy is not a D-Bag. He is a proven 30+ goal scorer even on a s*** team like Calgary. Anyone remember the blazing speed Brett Hull provided us? Iggy is alot faster then Hull and is a much more well rounded player and would give a right handed one timer again... plus all the rest he provides. I'm not at all suggesting we pay him a Kings salary but if he could be enticed for a decent price he would easy provide what we signed Bertuzzi, Cleary, Samuelsson and Alfie for!

We already have a massive youth movement going on I don't think more of a youth movement helps us at all. I was against the Alfie signing but he provided more then I would have ever imagined on and off the ice and that is the same that Iggy would do for the current youth on the team IMO

I think his age is a moot point, and adding him won't interupt the "Youth Movement". The fact that Glendenning, Nyquist, Sheahan and Tatar will be line-up regulars next season is a pretty good "Youth Movement". Having Iginla come in short term will instantly make the Red Wings a harder team to play against, but won't hinder the further youth movement, or the ability to retain good young players with a questionably large longterm UFA overpayment.

As far as the d-baggery, I compare it to getting Chris Chelios. Most fans didn't like the idea of trading for him because of similar reasons, but after he was acquired, he was quickly warmed to.

He's got some intangibles that would make him a benefit to the Wings. Despite his age, he can still skate and is coming off a 30goal/61pt season. Also, once again despite his age, he's quite durable. He's missed only 20 games since the play resumed after the 2005 lockout. He was virtually injury from 07/08 up until missing three games with a lower body injury this season with Boston. He'd make the Red Wings tougher to play against, give them a goal scoring winger and another leader off the ice.

If Holland found some way to retain Alfredsson for one more year, and also bring Iginla in for a year or two, the Red Wings could have a very dangerous offense. It would also give him the flexibility to promote and re-sign young players that are also in the mix.

I think what it would ultimately boil down to, is if Iginla would want to come to Detroit. He's obviously after a Stanley Cup, so he'll want to go to a team that gives him a chance to win one now. Then again, a lot of the big contending teams aren't going to have a ton of cap space going into next season after re-signing RFA's and such. For some reason, I can see Iginla going to Anaheim to replace Selanne.

I call BULL SH$T! Maybe in your mind there was an issue, but when we picked up Chelly I was out at several sports bars in the GR area, and all were filled with very happy RW fans. There was 0 repeat zero worries about picking him up by anyone. In fact there was universal praise for Holland/Bowman for having the guts to do it.
