So we've got a pretty good system...

HockeysFuture ranks us 3rd in the NHL for prospects. I've always found them to be a great site. What do we do with this, do we play a lot of kids or move one or two for a top pairing D? For me it depends on who we get.

Nonetheless I don't think we've ever been this high. The future is bright.

I'm not sure how I feel about Sheahan being top 5 and Sproul nowhere on the list.

Still, this previous season proved just how much talent we have waiting to emerge, a lot of these guys we wouldn't have even seen had it not been for chronic injuries.

The future is bright, I hope it comes sooner than later.

I'm not sure how I feel about Sheahan being on the list when he has already established himself as an NHLer. Jurco still can be sent down without waivers, but he'll probably (should) be on the roster next year. They did this for other teams too, like Mark Pysyk with Buffalo... they list him as a Sabres defenseman, then rank him as a prospect. IMO, someone who has already stuck with the big club is no longer a prospect.

That said, I'm not bashing on the Wings prospects. The pool is deeper than it's been since the very early 90s and a lot of these guys look like they'll be good NHLers, either with Detroit or somewhere else.

I'm curious as to what you guys think of the prospect pool in GR after they got eliminated 7-1 the other night.

Lol one game or series doesn't change players potential.

It does indicate readiness though. LOL

I don't think it does. Hockey is a team game. There may be a few that are ready maybe not. I personal feel there's a handful of guys ready.

Guys like Callahan and Ferraro should be in the nhl...just not with us. We got enough fourth liners.

Considering we never pick in the top ten, our pool is pretty great. As is our development.

We could really use another high-end center, though. With Jarnkrok gone, all we have is Janmark. A power forward would also be nice.

Like I've said elsewhere, I'm hoping we can steal Kevin Hayes from the 'hawks and maybe trade for Tom Wilson or Devante Smith-Pelly.

Pick any undrafted center with at least one point at the World’s and viola!! Instant Janrkrok upgrade. Calle’s currently packing a whopping 0G 0A in 7 GP.

But but he's the next gretzky. Seriously though, I think we are currently ok at center, and if mantha puts on 15-20 pounds this summer and we can pick up camel or moulson, I think we are ok in the wing too.

It's trendy to trash Jarnkrok, even trendier than it is to call him the next Gretzky (which, while I get the hyperbole, no one's come close to doing). All players struggle. Nyquist struggled this season, and then he exploded, and then he disappeared completely. Z's had his struggles. Datsyuk's had his struggles. Tatar had his struggles this season.

Bottom line: Elias Lindholm's Late Cousin (RIP) is gonna be a Realgud good player in this league (or in Sweden) for a long time, while David Legwand's probably played his last game as a Wing. And Patrick Eaves will score 75 goals next season playing on Crosby's wing. And that second-round pick we gave up will be the next Lidstrom, because of course it will. If anyone should be mocked for all that, well, it's not Jarnkrok.

But but he's the next gretzky. Seriously though, I think we are currently ok at center, and if mantha puts on 15-20 pounds this summer and we can pick up camel or moulson, I think we are ok in the wing too.

I want to see us get bigger and stronger on the wing. I want to see us work the boards and corners more effectively and such. Hence a guy like Wilson or Smith-Pelly (though, they're not really prospects anymore. Though, that doesn't really matter.) Mantha's big, but I see him becoming something along the lines of a Thomas Vanek - a sniper and a playmaker and maybe even a screener and maybe he even throws his weight around here and there when he's Feeling It, but probably not the most physically imposing sonsabitch to ever lace up a pair of skates.

In a perfect world, Bigger Stronger Guy would also be a righty. Hence, again, Wilson or Smith-Pelly.

"Yeah, we get it, you like Wilson and Smith-Pelly. We heard you the first several hundred times, bro. Problem is, we can't just become the Bruins overnight. If it were that easy, more teams would be built like that."

It's not that I want to see us go all Boston Strong or whatever they're euphemistically calling it these days. We're just very cuddly and vanilla. It's an honest-to-Goc fact. And it'd be fine, if we could kill with skill like we've done for the past couple decades, or even just push back when necessary (see: the Habs). Then I might be totes down with adding Pulkkinen to an already diminutive top six that didn't exactly set the world on fire in our one-win postseason run.

Skill and scoring prowess is all-important, while size and strength and physicality only get you so far. But we have the former and need to supplement it with the latter. In this way, we'd be a more well-rounded team. I like teams that can play any way the opposition wants to play. That, I think, is the new school.

The good thing is, we've drafted really damn well re: our future blue line. We clearly saw that today's top-four defenseman is big and mobile and good with the puck, and we drafted accordingly. Now we have to shift our focus to the forward corps, specifically the future top six or nine. There needs to be size there. I'm not saying take a pugilist over Nikolaj Ehlers. You know what I'm saying.

Not sure if serious...

Do you have any idea how hard it is to repeat??

Are there rumors that Wilson is available? That would be an interesting acquisition. I also like the idea of grabbing John Erskine from Washington for some third pairing physicality on the blueline.

John Erskine makes Mike Commodore look like Rob Blake. We're much better off with Lashoff back there. Avoid at all costs.

Calle's been great defensively, but unfortunately he looks almost exactly the same offensively as he did a few years ago. He has some talent, but lacks the strength/drive/instincts to become really dangerous. He's still very weak on the puck in the offensive zone, can't really win those 1-on-1 battles along the boards. And while he's a good skater, he doesn't have the explosive speed that Nyquist has (easy to tell as they're on the same line). Time to get over the loss of Jarnkrok.

But he was our top center prospect and we'll never replace him... Kind of reminds me of a young filppula, has all the tools to become a star in the nhl, but will almost certainly never hit his full potential unfortunately, I'm glad Holland saw this and got something for him when we needed to

Agreed. Jarnkrok was drafted in 2010, it's 2014. He should have been on the team by now. How many players drafted 4 years before making his NHL debut still become a great player?
